“Busy, right uh- me too. Super busy actually, with you know, work and everything else.”
“So, the Hampton’s are still beautiful, New York is still incredible, and Grandma Annabelle is still racist. The only thing that had changed is that I am now legally an adult! Yay!”
“So that’s where you went off to. I was wondering why we haven’t awkwardly bumped into each other around town yet, but here’s that. Anyways, Happy Birthday.

winding roads. || harley & jason
Singing along to the music with a full mouth of doritos, Jason nodded his head along as Harley sped down the road. With the window down, summer air flicking his hair back, rocking to tunes with his best friend while they ate the best food in the world, Jason was feeling pretty appreciative of life which was something he hadn’t felt in a while. This was what summer should be, not a mess of friendship drama, not people backstabbing and lying to each other or trying to hurt people they didn’t like. Hanging out and just being really fucking happy, that’s what summer was for. And Jason was super happy that he could still have that kind of summer with his best friend.
After the fortnight from hell, Jason was beyond ready to kick back and get higher than a kite, he felt like it had been a billion years since they’d last gone to The Point and gotten completely wrecked, it was about damn time. Jason sipped at his slurpee, clutching his head with his hand as he got a major brain freeze, shaking his head rapidly to try and stop it, laughing as they finally reached the top of The Point, their destination for the evening.
He sighed with contented happiness as he looked out at the neverending see of forests and hills, coupled by the flickering lights of Chester down below. Shit, he’d never get tired of this view. He looked to Harley, a wide smile on his face, nodding “Yeah, looking back it was really not a prime time in my rhyming history but that was the deal.” His eyes widened with excitement as Harley presented him with the bong and two baggies of weed. Jason closed his eyes, putting his hand over his heart, truly touched by this moment. “You are the best friend a guy could have, Harlitha Mayhew.” He grinned, then taking the bong, which thankfully already had water in it, and one of the baggies.
Packing the bong, Jason nodded his head along to the tunes, winding up his side window. “Mate it seriously feels like its been two hundred years since we’ve done this. And I am so bloody ready.” He laughed, fishing into his pocket for his lighter and lighting up the bong, having to give it a few goes before it lit properly, taking a deep inhale from the mouth piece. He held his breath for a moment or two, and then exhaled a large puff of smoke, laughing a slight cough as he did so. “one more one more” He held his finger up to Harley to stop him from taking it off him. He took another deep hit, exhaling happily and then passing the bong and the lighter to Harley “That shit is gonna get super dank super fast, it’s fucking good.” He laughed with approval.
Harley smirked proudly at Jason’s statement, nodding his head in agreement as he watched him pack the bong. “I know I am, and I completely blame you for my huge fucking ego - you flatter me Jasonita Hendy.” As Jason took his hit Harley peered out of the window at the small lights of the town that sat below them. Chester strangely enough looked bigger from The Point. All of the streetlights now resembled small strings of lights, and the large shopping centers, that were now closed and desolate leaving big black gaps in the view.
“I’m gonna be honest with you dude, I don’t think I’ve been sober since the party, which is gonna turn out really fucking bad once I do sober up.” Harley admitted as he grabbed the bong and lighter from Jason, laughing along with him. Harley instantly placed his mouth on the opening as he lit the bud, inhaling the warm smoke that filled the neck deeply. As Harley held his breath for several moments he passed the bong back to Jason, and man was he right, Harley could feel the high begin to cloud over him upon his first hit. As Harley exhaled he let out a relieved sigh, instantly feeling a sense calm coming over him.
Flicking the radio back on Harley slipped one of his old mix tapes into the slot for the cassette tape. “Do you remember when I made this one?” Harley asked over to Jason as the first song began playing: ‘Blink 182 - Dammit’. “It was like our fucking freshman year or some shit, it’s weird to think how much has changed since then. I feel like Chester is a completely different town.” He stated in a complete daze, unaware of how ‘deep’ he was getting as he began shoving handfuls of chips into his mouth.
“That was worse than the time my mom blasted her Shania Twain CD for a week until it mysteriously snapped in half and she finally got the message from the mysterious CD snapping ghost in our house.”
“Wait, so I’m not the only one who had a mysterious CD snapping ghost in my house? Shit. We need to get Chester on Ghost Busters, asap.”
Leave it to Harley to make her feel both better and worse at the same time. She wasn’t actually his mother but the urge to sign secretly sign him up for equiette classes never seized to exist every time he opened his mouth. “Wow, way to make this about you, Lee.” She commented with not much malice in her voice, honestly even in his crudeness who could really stay mad at him? Well….Amelia….and Oliver……and Tanner…and….Margo probably right now…and….alright, he probably wasn’t exaggerating about half the town. Normally the older girl would put up some sort of fight about him stomping into her room uninvited and wanting something, but honestly she had spent a little too long sulking in her own problems. Helping Harley’s with his was a pleasant escape even if she was already sure what it had to deal with. Sitting up, Lily pulled up her blanket with her a she pointed her signature worried gaze on him. “Alright spill, kiddo. What’s going on? You alright? You aren’t in trouble or anything are you?”
“Me, in trouble? Of course not!” Harley responded sarcastically, shaking his head as a small chuckle followed. “I’m in a fucking shit storm, Lil. Look, I know I don’t usually talk to you about shit like this, but Amelia literally wants nothing to do with me. Sure, I expected it but hearing it coming from her instead of the rest of the town, made me want to projectile vomit all over the Stanton driveway. Normally I’d shove my Amelia problems down Margo’s throat, or throw them Jason’s way, but I’m pretty sure both of them are ready to ring my neck, and I’m too young to die.” He let out a deep exhale, he couldn’t believe that he was sitting on Lilith Porter’s couch, spilling out all of his issues that he had absolutely no control over. Harley Mayhew had officially hit rock bottom.
Walking through that door was like walking into a battle field. All Harley could hear was his mom screaming at the top of her lungs, so loud that the rage echoed and radiated against the plaster walls. Her words were incomprehensible through the weeping tones in her voice, all he could make out were ‘I hate yous’ and ‘how could yous’. Harley just stood idly in the living room, goosebumps formed on his arms as he continued to listen in, as the screams rang in his ears. His parents never fought, at least not like this.
It didn’t take long for them to barge into the living room. His fathers face was bright red, wet from tears and full of grief. His mother’s was covered in wet down mascara, the black stains over powering the paleness of her skin yet intensifying the rage that sat in her eyes. It was like Harley wasn’t even there, they didn’t even see him. He was an outsider looking in through an open window, watching as someones world fell apart. “Dad..what happened?” Harley asked, his voice resembling that of a scared child as his dad stormed around the living room, shoving his records into a duffle bag that hung lazily from his arm. Harley gained no response, just a quick glance that spoke more than words could.
His mother continued to yell as she threw his dads clothes out into the hallway from their bedroom door. Button up shirts and khakis were spread across their apartment as Harley’s dad scrambled to pick them up. “Harley, go outside.” His mother ordered as she peaked out from the hall, pointing to the front door that lead him to the outside.
Harley made his way out onto his front porch, taking a seat on the cement stairs. The yelling escalated once again the second the door shut behind him. There was no doubt in Harley’s mind that just about everyone in a one block radius could hear the wailing that exploded from his mothers mouth, the begs and pleads that weeped from his father. Harley felt like they knew more than he did in this moment. The five minutes Harley was sitting on that porch felt like a life time, as his knee anxiously bounced up and down, his hands sweating in the grasp of the other, all Harley could do was try and put the pieces together in his mind that couldn’t sit still.
It only took five minutes for his father to come flying out from the front door. Harley instantly jumped up from where he sat, hoping it was him telling him that things would be fine, the he could come back inside and everything would be how it was when he left for school that morning, but that wasn’t what he got. Harley got nothing, his father simply strode past him, duffle bag held tightly in one hand as his keys to his truck dangled in the other. “Dad!” Harley called out as his father continued pacing towards his truck. “Dad!” Harley called out again, but as his father revved up the engine to his old Ford, Harley once again received no response, just another glance, only this one he would remember for the rest of his life.
After the old Ford faded down the street Harley rushed back inside, entering the living room only to find his mother sprawled out on the living room floor, crying harder than Harley thought was humanly possible. It hit him like a semi truck, coming down the road at full force. Harley had rarely ever seen his mom cry, but seeing her like this was almost as if he was looking down at a completely different person. “Mom” Harley said softly, though his voice still trembled with worry and fear. “Mom, please stop crying.” Harley stated as he crouched down next to her, pulling his mom into his arms as she continued to sob. “I’m so sorry.” She wept over and over as Harley continued to try and calm her tears, “Sorry for what? What happened?” Harley asked as his mother began to calm down and her tears began to fall slower. “He’s not coming back Harley, I’m sorry.”
He’s not coming back.
He’s not coming back.
He’s not coming back.
Those words rang in Harley’s head for months. When the family pizza shop closed down and disappeared exploiting the situation to the entire town of Chester, it rang. When he thought he spotted his dads Ford parked outside of the local grocery store one afternoon, it rang. During the custody battle, it rang. When he saw his father for the last time with her, it went off like an alarm in his head. An alarm he didn’t set, an alarm Harley didn’t know how to turn off. It rang with rage, disappointment, abandonment, and betrayal. As the months after the divorce went on Harley couldn’t figure out how to make it stop, so he acted like it was never there, and the more he told himself those feelings didn’t exist, that none of it mattered, the ringing stopped.

“Summertime sadness? More like summertime sickness am I right?” Lilith hadn’t been out of bed for the last three days, having the unfortunate luck of catching a cold in the middle of summer. Maybe the alcohol weakens your immune system pamphlets they gave out when she was in high school had more truth behind it than she intentionally thought. “Please tell me you’ve come bearing chicken noodle soap and fun 4th of July stories?”
“Ew” Harley instantly scoffed as he entered the room, his eyes glaring down at Lilith. “I didn’t come here to catch your cooties or gossip about my lame ass 4th of July - which by the way, was shit considering I’m still hiding from half of the town.” He wined, the utter bitterness dripping from his tone as he plopped down onto the couch abruptly. “I just need some motherly advice, mom.”
Margo narrows his eyes when he says “so shitty” trying to detect if he was being sarcastic or not. “Fine,” she says. “We’re friends.” Boys were so stupid. Harley seemed so determined to get her to verbally accept his olive branch that he didn’t realize it didn’t change anything anyway.
Harley’s signature smirk slipped its way back onto his lips at Margo’s words, he didn’t care that her sarcasm spilled all over him. He didn’t care that she was more than likely only going along with what he wanted to hear to shut him up, because now at least it would be easier for them to pretend, something Harley had become accustomed to since the Stanton party. “That’s what I like to hear” Harley stated boldly, applauding her as if she had performed some sort of trick. “I’ll see you at work tomorrow, maybe by then you’ll know if you wanna ‘kiss me or punch me’, or both.” He stated with a casual shrug as he began walking backwards, chuckling to himself along the way.

Jason scoffed, turning the music down a little so he could hear Harley “Of course I got the bloody cash, nearly didn’t thanks to your horn blasting but yeah, I got it.” He pulled the fifty from his pocket and waved it in front of Harley’s face. “If we don’t make it there, I’m not getting out and fucking pushing, we’ll just have to live in the car for the rest of our lives.” He shrugged with a laugh, his eyes widening as the car ran out of petrol literally as they pulled in.
“Well fuck me, how’s that for timing!? Twenty quid better get us to the point and back, I want at least four packets of doritos.” He replied as he got out of the car, pretty much skipping into the service station. “Hello!” Jason said in an awfully cheerful voice to the cashier who looked at him suspiciously. Though it wasn’t like Harley and himself weren’t known to the 7/11 staff, seeing as it was a frequent venue for their late night hangouts, sitting on the curb and eating as much crap as they could before throwing up on the road. They never claimed to be classy. Jason bounced down the store aisles, grabbing five packets of doritos, a bag of snakes, potato crisps, skittles, m&ms and twizzlers - dumping the lot on the counter before going to fill two large slushies. Going back to the counter, he paid for the lot, as well as the gas. It added up to $48.60. Perfect. With all the food put into a plastic bag, Jason slipped it onto his arm, holding the slushies with his hands “Have a good night!” He smiled at the old man, leaving the store and walking back out to the car.
Balancing one of the slushies between his arm and his side, Jason managed to open the door, getting into the car and passing Harley one of the cups, taking a sip from his own and dropping it into the cup holder, putting the plastic bag on the floor between his feet “I am about 9000 times more excited now. Dorites, skittles, m&ms, mother fucking twizzlers.” He leaned down, opening one of the dorito packets and taking a couple, closing his eyes as he ate, holding the packet out to Harley “Mmm yep, thats the shit I do like.” He nodded, in complete dorito bliss.
“Twenty quid?” Harley repeated to himself, shaking his head with a slight chuckle as he watched Jason slip through the glass door of the brightly lit 7/11. As Harley continued to watch the numbers on the gas gauge rise, his mind began planning out how he would tell Jason that Amelia kicked him to the curb. ‘I’ll do it when he’s too high to process anything.’ Harley thought to himself, but quickly shook his head at the idea. ‘No. Then I’ll have to tell him again, later. Fuck. Maybe I just won’t tell him at all - no. He’d kill me if he found out from some random.’ Just as Harley was ready for his mind to burst, Jason was making his way toward the car, and the abundance of snacks that covered his arms, snapped his mind back to reality.
Harley pulled pump out of his tank, and snatched up his receipt, balling it up and throwing it to the ground as he lowered himself back into his car. “Mother fucking twizzlers!” Harley exclaimed after Jason’s words, throwing his fist into the air in excitement. “Now lets go lose our minds, and stuff our faces until we projectile vomit all over this town.” Harley stated with utter pride as he started up the car, revving up his freshly fueled engine before speeding off onto the empty streets.
The Point was only a short fifteen minute drive to the edge of town, and was home to some of the best views that Chester had to offer on a clear night. The drive through the dark back roads were slightly nauseating after one too many beers, but the winding roads were worth it. As Harley swerved and speed his way through the small gravel road, he bobbed his head to the old Jimmy Eat World track that pumped through the speakers, all while snatching handfuls of Doritos from Jason’s bag and shoving them into his mouth messily.
As they reached the top Harley pulled his car up to the edge of the point, landing them the perfect parking spot. “What was our deal again? I provide the green, you supply the scene?” Harley reiterated as he reached to his back seat, pulling his backpack forward. “A deal’s a deal.” He said with a wide smirk on his face as he slipped his glass bong carefully out of the large compartment, followed by two small baggies of weed which he began to dangle in-front of Jason’s eyes. “I believe it’s your turn to do the honors dude.”
Margo pauses to see if Harley says anything interesting. When he finally speaks she can’t help but burst out laughing, full out, doubled over laughing. “Did you ever think that maybe it’s easier for me? It’s easier for me to just pretend you don’t exist, and saying it’s because of Mia is just my excuse because I don’t think your tiny little brain can wrap itself around that concept? Every time I see you I don’t know if I want to kiss you or punch you in the fucking face, and if you haven’t noticed, it makes me act like a fucking crazy person.
“Honestly, I just don’t see the point in being friends with you. I already have enough to deal with on Mia’s end after this stupid break-up, so I don’t really feel like taking you on too. Like, Jesus, two of the most self-centered people I know started dating: no shit it was going to end badly. Who’s going to look after me? Who’s going to take on my shit? I’m tired of fucking lying to everyone and smiling like everything is fucking dandy when it’s not. I don’t need to be your fucking therapist too. And every time I’m around you it’s this big fat reminder that I’m not good enough for anyone. And I’m tired of feeling that way. I want to feel awesome instead of shitty and insufficient and if you’re not going to help with that then you’re not relevant to my life.” Margo let’s out a deep breath. “Sorry. I just have a lot of my own shit going on right now and I’m tired of this stupid break-up. Of conversations like this. Conversations about Mia. I just want to keep my head down and graduate so by this time next year Chester’ll be so far behind me I won’t have the chance to look back.” Margo sends Harley a death stare, the kind that’s meant to make people uncomfortable, while she waited for what she knew would be a totally unsatisfying response.
Harley couldn’t help but roll his eyes, mostly at himself for once again making himself look like a complete asshole. He knew he was self-centered, but damn, talking to Margo constantly made it more apparent than ever. “You know, I never said I wanted you to be my therapist. We don’t have to talk about Mia, ever if you don’t want to, because being completely honest, she’s the last person I want on my mind. I don’t know, I just want you to be my fucking friend again Margo, like we use to be. Sure, maybe that’s selfish considering I make you feel so shitty, but I seem to be on a roll with the whole selfish thing so might as well keep it going, right?” He knew that probably wasn’t she wanted to hear, but it was the truth. If Harley was selfish for wanting one of the closest people in his life back, then that was okay with him.
winding roads. || harley & jason
Sprawled across his bed, amongst piles of clothes, food wrappers and dvd covers, Jason finally rose from the position he’d been in for most of the night, pulling on some of the clothes from his bed and jumping up and down a few times to actually wake himself up. He was actually pretty excited to see Harley, it felt like forever since they’d hung out and smoked up, it was basically top of his list of favourite things to do.
He switched shirts three times before finally settling on a plain black one, pulling on his vans and switching his light off as he opened the door onto the dark hallway. It was nearly midnight and everyone was asleep, hopefully it’d stay that way. He shut his door quietly and snuck downstairs, using his phone torch to light the kitchen as he looked for Nigel’s wallet. Jason didn’t often take money without asking, his Mum was usually quite happy to hand over a tenner every so often but honestly anything he could do to metaphorically kick Nigel in the balls was a good time. Finally locating Nigel’s wallet on one of the cabinets near the wall, Jason glanced back over his shoulder, holding his phone in his mouth as he opened the wallet and took out a fifty. It was one of about five in there. Fucking Nigel. Richie Rich McGee. He internally rolled his eyes about a billion times, then pretty much jumping through the roof as a car horn sounded outside. “Fuck!” He whispered, dropping his phone onto the cabinet and quickly picking it back up. He shoved the money into his pocket and put the wallet back, running (very quietly) out of the kitchen and into the hallway. Closing the front door behind himself, he jogged down the front steps and down the path to Harley’s idling car, yanking open the door “You fucking Rodney! What part of ‘sneaking out’ don’t you get?? Honestly mate.” He exhaled, sitting down and closing the door “Come on drive, before I get castrated” He gestured to the road, then smiling at Harley once they’d pulled out from the curb. “Now for adventure time.” Jason smirked, leaning forward and turning up the radio, the bass of the music vibrating the entire car and probably waking up everyone in Chester.
Harley busted out in laughter as Jason entered the car, casually shrugging his shoulders at Jason’s worries. “Oops.” He said nonchalantly, instantly hitting his foot on the gas pedal at Jason’s cue. He zoomed down the small residential street, going about 45 in a 15. Luckily the cops in Chester were just as lazy and incompetent as the rest of the town. I’d be a shock to see a cop car past ten-thirty in this town, which was only a positive in Harley’s eyes, especially after the party incident. “Slow your roll dude. Did you even get the cash, because we’ll be lucky if we even make it to the 7/11 on this tank.” Harley stated, his eyes flicking down to the flashing red fuel symbol on his dash board.
Just as Harley pulled up to the small corner gas station, his car began to mutter softly as he came to a complete stop. “Alright dude, head in there and get as much shit as you can, just save me a twenty for the gas. That should be enough to get us to the point and back, I hope..” He ordered, his voice trailing off to a slightly unsure tone as he slipped out of the car. The gas station was completely dead, the old fluorescent lights flickering against the night sky. You could see the old man inside of the service station peering out at the boys through the glass door as Harley began pumping the gas.
Margo lets out a sigh of relief. God Bless Harley and his Ria-Lovett-kissing lips. Sure he was totally nonchalant about crushing people’s hearts, but at least he was equally nonchalant about literally everything else. “Oh,” her face falls immediately. “Well, that sucks. I’m sorry. Even though it’s kind of your fault.” She looks at the ground, not quite sure what to say. “So… Um, I should probably go. Since I’m Mia’s friend, and you’re, uh, her ex, and…loyalties or something.” Margo had to side with Mia at the end of the day. Even if she had slept with some guy, she wouldn’t have slept with some guy is Harley hadn’t screwed her over. He was the butterfly wings that started the storm. “I’ll see you at work,” she mumbles, turning to leave.
Harley let out a frustrated sigh as Margo turned away. If there was one person who could flip Harley inside out and confuse the utter shit out of him, it was Margo Flamel. At this point he didn’t know what he preferred, the idea of the friendship that once existed, or her ripping him to shreds for being a complete fuck up. Whatever it was, it wasn’t this. The awkward tip toeing around everything, her pulling him in just to spit him back out. “Wait.” Harley stated boldly, in attempts to stop her. “What the hell does that even mean? So, just because you’re friends with Amelia you’re going to go back to pretending I don’t exist. I don’t fucking understand chicks and their rules, I honestly don’t. When I’m dating Amelia, you barely speak to me, and now that I’m not you’re going to be fucking weird? I don’t get it, dude.”
