Yes the world is 100% falling apart but in case anyone is not aware of what is happening in terms of the future of film/tv/all entertainment this weekend, and trust me that future matters, here are the historic records Wonder Woman is breaking as we speak:
-It was the highest-grossing opening night ever for a female-directed film, beating out Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight
-Its opening night beat out other superhero origin films (all male-lead, male-directed) such as Doctor Strange ($.9.4M), Ant-Man ($6.4M), Thor ($3.2M) and Captain America ($4M) and took the rank of the third largest debut of 2017 behind Guardians Vol 2 and Beauty and the Beast
-In its opening in the UK, it beat The Wolverine, Thor, and Captain America. In Brazil it beat Thor, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America, and Man of Steel. It’s the third largest opening for a Warner Bros. film ever in the Philippines only behind Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman, and made more than double the box office $ of both Thor and Captain America in Russia
-It is the most critically and audience acclaimed DC superhero film since The Dark Knight with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, beating The Dark Knight Rises, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 & 2, and both The Avengers movies. It is so well-reviewed that the original projections of a $65-75M box office have now increased to $80-100M, which could make it the highest-grossing live action female film in history.
-The vast majority of box office for all superhero films is dominated by male audiences, and there is a prevailing notion (i.e. myth) that women do not go to the theater to support big action adventure films, and that men will not support a big action adventure film with a female lead (debunked - thank you!- by Star Wars: Force Awakens & Rogue One). But in a truly historic milestone, there is a 50/50 Male/Female split in audiences going to see Wonder Woman, debunking both myths. Oh and a whopping 25% of those audiences, both men and women, plan to see it AGAIN this weekend.
If Wonder Woman succeeds, it isn’t just an historic victory for women. It will open the gates for Hollywood executives to take more of a risk with diverse filmmakers and artists (Gal Gadot is Israeli, Jewish, and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors) across all mediums because it will have buried in the biggest way possible the incorrect, fear-based notion that diversity= no $. So show up, regardless of your interest in comic books and big action VFX, and let’s start changing the homogeny of faces of individuals we see on and behind our screens.
