Artist of the Day: Chris Foss, celebrated artist whose work graced countless sci fi book covers, including novels by Asimov, Vance, Blish, Harrison, and E.E. Doc Smith, matte paintings for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and illustrator of the original Joy of Sex (yes, we have Foss to thank for every last natural body hair).
Notably, Foss’s iconic cover for Asimov’s "The Stars Like Dust " was coped and made into a large scale painting by the contemporary artist Glenn Brown, and sold at auction for $3.5 million - none of which Foss himself received.
When asked during a recent BBC interview about the Brown painting sale and what his current work goes for, Foss humbly replied: “Let’s just say I’m doing a painting and it will buy me - which is what I want - a state of the art diesel tractor.”
