Hey there! So I’ve seen it mentioned a few times on here that ARPG’s are a good alternative for those wishing to escape the trappings associated with other CS groups. And while to a certain extent this can be true, there are still things you should still be aware of when joining.
For some context, I’m an ex-ARPG admin. I privately provided Mod Shit proof of this fact. I worked for one of the larger ARPG’s on DeviantArt for over two years, and was a player before that.
I think the easiest way to explain my stance is to go into my own experience for a bit. I left CS to stop myself spending money, but I missed the community aspect of it. Someone suggested ARPG instead and… I won’t deny, at first it was really good for me! I got myself a character that I adored, the art prompts encouraged me to push myself, I made lots of friends, it was fun! But… Then the grind started to set in. And that’s when I not only started to see the issues, but fall back into my old spending habits.
You see, the way ARPG’s are set up typically reward artists who are able to draw quickly and tick all the boxes. And if you want to get anywhere in an ARPG, you start doing the same. My art stagnated because I would draw the same basic thing over and over to grind for items, or points, or whatever. But… If you don’t want to grind art yourself, that’s okay! You can just pay someone else to do it. Or, send money to the group to get the items that way! The group I was with had a lootbox-type system where you could pay and have items randomly rolled for you.
And that’s not mentioning traits. Most ARPG’s (at least the feral ones I’m most familiar with) have breeding systems, and rarities for certain traits that can be passed on via breeding. This scarcity made certain traits extremely valuable, and people would end up getting a sort of FOMO over it. I remember when a new super rare trait was dropped in my old group, and watching players drop high amounts of money or art for just the chance to obtain this trait - yes, the CHANCE, because it wasn’t guaranteed in the slightest. I think at one point it was something like $100 for a 3% chance to obtain the trait. Madness.
My suggestion for people wanting to go into ARPG as a way to escape CS’s monetary trappings is to be careful. Be aware of the monetized factors within the group. Try to resist FOMO, because those same “$100 for a 3% chance” characters I mentioned before now sell for around $20 (if they have the rare trait - those that didn’t were never valuable). The price of that special thing you want will always come down eventually, or you might be lucky and find it via gameplay first! And set yourself a budget if you really must spend money on the species, of what you can/can’t spend in a given… Week, month, year, whatever.
In short - ARPG’s can be fun, and if you play purely with art then it can be a free alternative to CS! But just know that the art can be a grind sometimes, and there’s still monetization lurking in the shadows.
I hope this helps at least a few of you out there!
very fucking helpful to bring up, those are just as predatory as cs and fucking gacha games with lootboxes and RNG to suck up your dollars. make sure to look through them thoroughly to make sure they don’t have those trappings
