i feel so bad for momonosuke on paper because his life is genuinely tragic his parents were murdered, he was forced into a role way too big for him, he had to carry an entire kingdom on his back, and he never even got a chance to actually grow up. but unfortunately, having a terrible backstory doesn't make someone immune to being completely insufferable, and he is easily one of the most annoying kids in anime. he’s a total snob and an absolute brat, and it’s honestly wild that he’s oden’s son when oden, his mom, and his sister are some of the coolest characters in the entire series. people always say luffy was too hard on him, but they’re wrong luffy was real for how he treated him, and if it wasn't for luffy snapping him back to reality, momonosuke would have stayed unbearable.
luffy was 100 percent justified every single time he checked him. everyone acts like luffy is just being a heartless bully, but luffy doesn't care about your bloodline or your sob story if you are acting like a useless coward and expecting everyone else to fight your battles while you pout. that rock luffy threw at him in wano or whenever he told him to quit whining and step up was the exact wake up call he needed, because nobody else had the spine to tell the literal shogun-in-waiting to stop being a total baby. like stop saying he’s just a kid he’s not just a kid he’s the next shogun if luffy didn’t beat the cowardness out of him then he would have grown up to be a leader who when someone attacks his country he would run away and leave his people to die because he’s scared . so luffy had to make sure to be harsh with him as kid because nobody else would or was all the other adults babied him, luffy was the only one who actually invested in that kid. 
on top of that, it’s beyond disgusting that oda gave an eight year old a perverted gag; oda knew exactly what he was doing putting an eight year old body into those perverted situations and playing it off for laughs, and the fact that he tried to act like it was just a funny anime trope made it even worse. momo literally smirks when he harasses robin and nami, like he’s child and grabbing titties that’s insane. you cannot play the "he's just a traumatized child who doesn't know any better" card when the character literally smirks and takes total advantage of it. if you have the mindset of “he’s a kid he doesn’t know what he’s doing” when it comes to harassment no child should be put in your care because your predatory. it's gross, it's completely out of pocket, and it ruins any sympathy you're trying to build for him. it’s annoying because it teaches young boys who watch this anime, that they can get away with that pervert shit.
nobody worth their salt is hating him because he's weak or because he cries he's eight years old, crying is literally job description number one when your entire life gets upended by a psychotic dragon man and a tyrant. nobody expects a literal second grader to box kaido. but you can be terrified and weak without being a manipulative little weirdo who abuses his title. even after he finally gets aged up into an adult body by shinobu, half of him is still dealing with the fact that his personality is just fundamentally grating. at the end of the day, all the redemption in wano couldn't wash away years of him being an absolute annoying little shit, and it is completely valid to just look at him and say yeah, i still cannot stand this kid. he is top 5 least favorite characters for me.
like yes i feel extremely bad for him and the scene when he was saying goodbye while crying to the strawhats in his adult body but all luffy can see is that eight year old boy broke my heart. like yes that scene made me cry a little because again i feel bad for him but it doesn’t erase how insufferable he was for over 200 episodes
“he’s just a kid “ i don’t care 😭 he isn’t ment to be raised as a future kid he’s ment to be the future shogun. yall act like kids are saints who don’t know better but adults are at fault because they excuse that type of behavior and don’t want to teach them. which was all the adults in momos life did expect luffy.
as much as i love one piece things like this (the extreme fan service and sexualization/gags) keeps it from being a 10/10 anime for me. like it’s a 9/10 for me i knock one point off for that shit because it’s annoying.
