#up next in #romcom summer 2026 #upgraded #which through no fault of its own suffers (for me) in comparison to working girl 1988 #being as they are both a cinderella premise of ‘woman pretends to be own boss to access professional and social benefit/aka the ball’#which on the one hand is a great cinderella premise! but on the other I worship and adore working girl at a molecular level #and the fact that I live in london so it’s not really the ‘fancy and exotic locale’ the movie requires it to be #which can’t be helped #but the high points were a) lena olin holy shit she walked AWAY with that movie #and b) as above: watching archie renaux (v tall) fold himself into a pretzel to access camila mendes (v short)#he is very cute and he makes a cute pretzel #also enjoying the more standard london accent on screen instead of hiddleston RP

#just checked and I'm still feral about it #timeless #I don’t understand the ‘dialogue supremacy’ approach to fiction that I’ve seen mentioned sometimes #ie people skipping text as readers to jump from dialogue to dialogue #or as writers of prose preferring to create an ersatz script but with ‘she said’ tags #maybe it’s coming from a (non us-ian) less expository culture #where ‘talking about feelings’ is simply much less common (or desired!) in daily life #but like #so much good stuff can be dialogue free #Big Feeling stuff can be dialogue free #things that move the narrative forward can be dialogue free #it’s like a version of ‘he wouldnt fucking say that’ but like just ‘he wouldn’t say anything at all tbh’#‘they simply would not narrate their feelings on this matter’#an unexpected visit a Look a bottle of vodka and an inviting gesture is getting it done here #and more eloquently than dialogue is capable of tbh

#addicted to love #what griffin dunne was doing directly before practical magic and I also love the production design and costuming of this one #also? I really used to enjoy how unlikeable they both were allowed to be #he’s in theory the romcom protagonist but also he’s unhinged and fixed on his ex to a frankly illegal degree #and she comes along like ‘oh wanna talk about unhealthy fixations on exes? hold my beer’ and lowers the bar #he’s out to get someone back and she out for REVENGE #together they’re just awful! I love them!#one of those 90s romcoms I watched so often part of the dialogue play at random sometimes in my mind #also I was obsessed with meg’s whole look in this film #romcom summer 2026

Another good The Count of Monte Cristo series video from PBS Masterpiece, this time concerning their filming locations.

#the money for this show is definitely on the screen and the location scouts were putting their backs into it #I was rewatching the other day and one scene of fernand having a breakdown I was thinking ‘that is a real room’#like the patinated quality of the surfaces and the way the light comes in from the side #not to skip over the performance which was also good but having it in a wood-panelled room that was clearly of the time and a real place?#so so so nice to watch #like that is a wood-panelled study!#he’s going in there to be private!#that’s exactly what that space is used for and you are who that space is used by!#anyway location to build character and to guide how people behave is so important and this series was careful with it #also I love to see costumes in the place des vosges I am who I am #the count of monte cristo 2024 #also omg filming out of sequence just have meant they do Sad Scenes of yearning at the start and end the shoot with happy young romance #I’m having an emotion about mercedes again

#sherlock holmes #what a time #not to say that ‘when will movies be Fun again’ bc arguably many movies are dedicated to presenting the concept of fun #but they are mostly also comedies #aiming to be a comedy made as a comedy and promoted as such #whereas what I want are other genres and tonal ranges that are then Fun #like raiders of the lost ark - tonally a pretty dark adventure movie (which is Fun)#or contemporary sci fi like the martian which is a pretty tense castaway movie (which is also Fun)#and here the ritchie holmes - costume and mystery #and in that costume drama and mystery context it’s committed to being such fun!#I don’t want a comedy which assuming what I will laugh at and presenting gags #I want other genres who want me to enjoy myself so much the delight comes along for free
