Years before they sizzled up the screen together in the film noir classic Double Indemnity, Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck jingled all the way in this great-granddaddy of the Hallmark Christmas movie, Preston Sturges's Remember the Night (1940).

Manhattan Assistant DA Fred is prosecuting shoplifter Barbara on her third strike, but takes pity and posts her bail himself when her case is held over until after Christmas. A series of misadventures leads to her joining him for an old-fashioned small-town Christmas on his mother's farm, where they fall in love and share a New Year's kiss at the barn dance.

He offers her a chance to jump bail as they take the long way home through the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, but she decides to plead guilty and take whatever's coming to her as long as he stands beside her.
