The inner flap of the dust jacker of Monster Hunting Today (1983) asks, “Are you interested in monsters?” Why yes, yes, I am. Unfortunately, this Daniel Cohen book covers pretty much the same ground as Aylesworth’s and similar cryptid-focused books. It’s also far breezier than most of Cohen’s books, with really big type. I read it in about two hours? Topics include dinosaur survivals, lake monsters that aren’t Nessie, Nessie, giant octopi and Yeti/Sasquatch.
The last chapter is titled “Bigfoot: Good News/Bad News” and honestly, the bad news was pretty bad. First, the Mt. Saint Helens eruption destroyed the area known as Ape Canyon, ground zero for Bigfoot folklore. This is the place were miners in the ’20s shot at a supposed Bigfoot, who brought back friends and laid siege to their cabin that night. The story is recounted in pretty much every Bigfoot book up to that point (and memorably dramatized on In Search Of…) and the eruption meant that if there were Bigfoots in the area, they were probably gone now. Worry not, though, because the following year, Rant Mullens came forward claiming that not only was the Ape Canyon story a hoax, but also that he’d carved multiple pairs of big wooden feet that hoaxers had been using for decades to seed the countryside with tracks. After that, Cohen recounts sightings by Paul Freeman that resulting in footprint casts that some folks thought were really good and others thought were clearly a hoax. The chapter ends with John Beckjord’s crackpot theory that Bigfoot can’t be found because he’s from another dimension. Sorry, there was supposed to be good news in this chapter?
Anyway, the real star of the show is the gorgeous dust jacket. Cohen’s books have some impressive cover art, but this one takes the prize. I’m a scaredy-cat when it comes to dark water and things that might live in it, so this serpent is genuinely terrifying to me, even without the red eye and the infernal glow. I really love the graphic element of the water line and the font choice as well, but quality of the rendering and the color choices are really what do it for me. Amazing. Peak ’83 monster art.
Incredible cover art! This belongs in every graphic designer's inspiration folder
Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost

so wildly obnoxious when you agree with the starting point of someone's stance only for them to hard turn into things you DON'T agree with and now you have to defend the thing that was originally annoying you

SPOCK HAS A MATING CYCLE?????
I remember one time I got INSANELY high off of edibles while playing Among Us, and it quickly became apparent to the other players online. I forget how honestly but literally anything "sus" I did was ignored by everyone because I was so fucking high. I tested this theory by standing in front of a body and the person that actually reported it didn't even mention me. The funniest part was when I was trying to do wires, I kept fucking up over and over again, so I was just standing in front of wires for actual minutes trying to figure it out. A small crowd of players gathered around me to watch and would get mad every time someone reported a body or emergency meeting because "she's never going to get her tasks done if you keep interrupting them." I don't think anyone cared about winning at that point, they just wanted to see the high crew mate succeed in her tasks.
THIS IS 1000% ACCURATE LMFAO. Thank you op
Ohhhh yeah

Need $50 to buy my monthly meds!
Once again, the month has been unkind when it comes to expenses.
In addition to a major appliance failure, random debts suddenly debiting at once, and several unplanned medical visits, medications, and the transportation to and from those doctors (it cost me $10 round trip to go to my doctor's office with gas being what it is and I am spending $100 a week on gas and meds and expenses)
The biggest issue is that my pain doctor switched me from the pain patch I could not afford ($136 for a 30 day supply, medicaid refuses to cover an portion of it) to a newer one that she was hoping my insurance would accept ($55 for a 30 day supply if there's no assistance from medicaid). Of course, they rejected the prior authorization so I had to buy the meds out of pocket. I am in so much pain, not buying them was not an option (I am still waiting for ortho to deal with my shoulder, which is so damaged that the fingertips on my right hand keep feeling numb). But this means I can't afford my NORMAL pain meds when they come up tomorrow for refill. One is $31 and the other is $15, plus the fees for transferring the money. I have $.63 in my checking account, so you see my issue, rip. I need to pick up my meds tomorrow morning [8/15/26].
Now, I write (pretty okay, they tell me), I draw (with less skill), I make graphics and edits, (including desktop wallpapers, tumblr dividers and headers now). (Please see my pinned post for examples!) — If you'd like to request something as a thank you for any kind of donation, please message me!
