[a maldrey dark royalty au.]
Uma and Mal are lounged against the velvet crimson colored bean bag chair, watching Jay and Carlos play some zombie video game they can’t remember the name of. They’re both small enough to fit on the bean bag chair, but there’s little to no space between them. But they’re comfortable, though, in each other’s presence, basically attached by the shoulder. Mal is sunken lower into the bean bag than Uma, so she’s one small movement away from basically putting her head on Uma’s shoulder.
The majority of the afternoon was spent in silence, with the exception of the clicking of the game controllers, Jay and Carlos randomly going into fits of banter and candy wrappers being opened.
“You know,” Mal starts, chewing and swallowing the remnants of the sour candy she had in her mouth. “This is nice.”
Her voice was light as a feather, not exactly tired but more dilute.
It doesn’t take a stretch of the neck for Mal to look up at Uma. Her head tilted slightly upward, and her green eyes studied Uma’s side profile. She might not have heard her because she still faced forward, the flashing lights from the television painting her face.
“True,” Uma responds, with a huff of a laugh. She takes another chocolate-peanut butter candy and absentmindedly begins to rip open the packaging. “This candy is so much better than it was on the Isle, probably because it’s not rotted.”
“Nooo,” Mal half whined half chortled, nudging her arm. “I mean this. Us spending time together like this. Hanging out with you especially.”
That is when Uma’s face meets Mal’s. Mal expected to agree with her, but she just looked puzzled.
“What?”
“I just feel like since we started becoming closer, I started to realize that you’re really fucking cool.”
A pause. Uma looks startled. “Are you sick or something?”
Mal blinks. “What? No. What do you mean by that?”
“That was weird.” Uma commented, started to slip into a fit of giggles. “That was so fucking weird, Mal.”
“Showing affection is weird?” Mal jovially argued over the sound of Uma’s laugh. The brown skinned girl put her hand over her mouth, failing to stifle her cackling, and threw her head back.
In that moment Mal had to remember VKs’ relationship to showing sincerity and affection. It was a foreign concept, for sure, but Mal doesn’t entirely agree that there was no affection at all on the isle. Certainly not with Uma. Her protectiveness of her crew, as well as the younger VKs proves that her heart has always been in the right place. In Auradon, sincerity is shown through words, while in the Isle it was shown by actions. Uma was just that, her actions do in fact speak louder than her words.
“You are so annoying!” Mal laughs, chucking an unopened piece of candy at her.
Guess you could say Uma reacting awkwardly to Mal’s random words of affirmation was merely a language barrier.
