Five Favorite (DBH) Fics I've Written
Thanks so much for the tag, @veilder! (See here for Veilās post btw) Love this particular take on a tag game (not the least cause I get to talk about my writing, yay! š)
Letās get into it then, shall we? Iāve written like 35 fics, so ima slightly cheat and just say my top five DBH fics, which at least narrows my decision-making pool to 16 lol
1. Not What It Sounds Like
Premise: Hank thinks Connor has a secret lover. Connor is simply playing the theremin (aka picked up a musical instrument playing hobby). This totally goes over super well with excellent communication that definitely does not snowball into massive and increasingly ridiculous misunderstandings.
Why itās a fave: Purely for the unadulterated, ridiculous, 3am fun I had writing this. My first ever crack-treated-seriously fic, and it was a total moment writing it. Like, electricity had gone out, writing in the dark, cracking myself up lmao it was literally just a blast to write. AND THEN SOMEBODY MADE A FRIGGIN FANTASTIC FANART OF IT AND I DIED IN WONDER (you can see it at the end of ch3 in the fic and Iām still not over it). Also, like, so many people commenting how much they enjoyed it/that it made them laugh/made their day better? Bc I tend to write angsty, more serious stuff and like wow the joy of making peopleās day better instead of hurting them asksksksk it was a trip š¤£
Also shout out to that comp sci student who commented saying this fic inspired their āfinal project on which a large portion of [their] grade [was] dependent because [theyāre] programming a theremin.ā Like. That was absolute goals. This is my legacy š crack fic supporting educational enrichment, who knew? šš
Premise: A short, evocative, almost poetry-esque perspective on Kara through the lens of her relationship with guns over the course of the game.
Why itās a fave: Is it weird to say I like my own writing? š
Because I dig the rhythm of this one. Itās short. Punchy. Raw. Brutal. IDK MAN I JUST LIKE THE WAY I WROTE IT. Felt like a fun writing exercise. And my gal Kara does not get near enough the love nor respect she deserves.
3. Perhaps the World Ends Here
Premise: Darkest timeline. The humans won. Josh is the last of Jericho, forced to write a fake account of the history of the android āuprising.ā This is how he resists, even in dying, even amidst the last dregs of hope. Inspired by George Orwellās 1984.
Why itās a fave: OKAY SEE NOW LISTEN UP FOLKS, JOSH IS FANTASTIC AND IS HIGH KEY ONE OF MY FAVES AND DESERVES SO MUCH MORE RESPECT AND APPRECIATION. Thereās a violence inherent in nonviolent revolutionsānot the violence one inflicts on others, but what one is willing to endure, or even self-inflict, for a cause one views as just. This ficās context simply allows the mettle in Josh we see in game to truly be tested and proved for what itās worth, and it comes out invaluable.
Premise: Taking the RA9-awful first ending of DBH I ever witnessed and WRANGLING IT INTO SOMETHING MARGINALLY LESS AWFUL AURGH. Which is to say, Markus is dead, Connor didnāt commit suicide on stage, which means CyberLife took back control of his programming, and it MADE ME SO MAD THAT IāM WRITING THE LONGEST FIC I EVER HAVE JUST TO FIX IT. Sorry lol ahem I mean the premise of this fic is that scenario, except Connor kind of develops a split personality, the deviant part getting trapped in a mental/digital cage beneath the Zen Garden while a machine Connor wreaks havoc on his personal life outside. Also Kamski is trying to take over the world. And itās up to the Connor trapped inside his own head to stop it.
Why itās a fave: Iām not sure āfavoriteā is the best word to describe it lmao. I certainly have a lot of strong feelings about it. Itās the longest thing Iāve ever written to-date, will probably be something like the length of a full length novel when finished, so itās a massive undertaking for me (I know other people write way more, but itās big for me lol). It was born out of spite and a deep desire to make things right. Def getting worse before it gets better though. And low key writing something this long is hard, and I made the mistake of just posting as I go instead of finishing it first and then posting, so the timeline of chapters coming out is all over the place though. š¤Ŗ
But itās also perhaps the first fic I wrote entirely for myself. Like, I-donāt-care-if-nobody-but-me-even-likes-or-reads-it kind of wrote-it-for-me. Which is huge for people-pleasing me lol. This is literally my therapy fic. Been a while since Iāve added to it bc it feels like an impossible mountain (and I unfortunately want to do it well/justice lol) akancbjdks but one day we gonna get there.
5. Five Times Nines Got Gavin Coffee (and One Time Gavin Returned the Favor)
Premise: Literally the titleāexcept itās really about how Nines and Gavin go from enemies to brothers/bffs over the course of several coffee-stained exchanges. If you give it a shot, do pls give it the first two/three chapters or so cause they start off on not great terms. My fave chapters are the later ones <3
Why itās a fave: Ima be so real. A huge part of why itās a fave/on this list is cause it introduced me to @veilder. Like, Veil commented on every single chapter an essayās worth and at that time we didnāt even know each other. Those comments made my entire fic writing experience. Like, the care and thoughtfulness/consideration that went into each comment? And I got a most superb fandom friend and tumblr mutual out of it? Heck yeah? Aalamwbhxkxndjx? Like Iām not even kidding writing the fic mightāve been worth it just for that āŗļøš«¶
And also it meant a ton bc I was half debating making it Reed900 cause ik thatās super popular and what some of my other friends liked, but low key I prefer them just as best budsāand ultimately decided to stay true to my OG vision/preference and holy cow thatās like exactly why Veil loved it?? So it was super affirming like eyy there are other folks out there like me that also super appreciate this take!
