THE BYLER MULTIVERSE >:D
Drew these in Magma<3
I need a fanfic where Mike and Will meet in the past (around season 2) and Will meets young Mike, and Mike meets young Will. It would be interesting if there was a heart-to-heart with a younger version, and what would be REALLY interesting is if Mike from season 2 hits Mike from season 5 for making Will cry ;^;
I'm here to heal you.. nothing can stop me from loving them
Epilogue boyfriends 💛💙
Happy new year!✨✨))
I'm... so confused?
What was the purpose of the scene about queer signals, if Will was never going to receive queer signals? Why was the question concerned with the obviousness of signals, and not the mere presence of them? Why use the term "shared looks" when that was a known call and response on set for Noah and Finn?
What was the meaning of the snowball and avalanche metaphor? Why include that scene at all? Where was the payoff?
You're going to write an entire meta scene on queer signals of attraction, include examples that we have already observed, indicate an eventual pay off... and not let it pay off? Why? To be malicious?
You tell the audience through Will that Mike was just his Tammy this entire time and expect us to believe it? Was Tammy in Robin's video tape? Did Robin know Tammy since she was five? Did Tammy run after her in the rain or recognize her breathing over the radio?
And Will Byers never got kissed. Will Byers witnessed queer love, queer joy, and queer intimacy through a kiss at the beginning of the season, wanting that for himself because he's a romantic... and never even got kissed. Not even by his epilogue boyfriend.
stranger things, first show in history to introduce the cyrano trope and shoot cyrano right in the head with chekhov’s gun
Vecna’s fucked with Vol 2 memory way more than we thought
Alright. I’m going to put together everything I’ve observed myself and seen on here into one final mega theory on memory loss.
Vecna is screwing with both us, the viewers, and the memories of the whole party.
The first place this really sticks out is in the coming out scene. Will says some things that are really odd. Number 1: One of the memories was something about the party getting malts at Melvald’s. Melvald’s is a general store where Joyce works. They don’t sell milkshakes. But in the 50s, it was a restaurant where Henry and Patty went. Number 2: he mentions enjoying getting lost in the woods. He definitely did not enjoy that—last time he was in the woods he got kidnapped! Number 3: the Tammy thing. We’ve consistently been shown for the last five seasons that Mike is NOT Will’s Tammy. He has several parallels with Vickie, including this one
And this one
And this one (Vickie paces, Max remarks that Holly is pacing just like Mike).
—plus Mike is obviously way way more than a hallway crush as they’ve had a deep and special friendship since forever (Mike telling Will that the first day he met him was the best day of his life), and a literal DAY ago Will was looking for signals to date him. Will is not himself.
But it’s not only Will’s memories being screwed with. Mike starts calling Joyce by her first name instead of Ms. Byers in volume 2, despite having called her Ms. Byers in vol 1. We know from previous seasons that Mike is mouthy and distrusts authority figures, but he sincerely respects the ones he likes and cares about the opinion of, like Joyce. This is pretty out of character. Also out of character is his sudden unwillingness to touch will, pulling his hand back when Will is thrown to the ground in e5 and his hand twitches awkwardly as he stands by Will’s bedside in e6. Now, this could just as well be a sign of Mike going back to repression mode after being overloaded with signals, but in S2, the only part of Will that remains free from the Mindflayer’s possession is the hand that Mike held during the crazy together basement scene. Their love is that powerful—remember Max saying all she needed was Lucas, and that the connection was broken the first time not because the music shut off but because he took his hand of hers? Yeah. That’s why Mike can’t touch Will yet. Another huge thing is the adults’, especially Joyce’s, lack of memory. They forgot his birthday. She can’t remember how old Will was when he went missing. Neither she nor Hopper remember that they LITERALLY WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL with Henry, and they + Bob Newby were partly responsible for having his dad arrested for the murders. That’s huge. That’s not something anyone just forgets. Vecna is playing them like they’re all pawns in his game, and he’s several steps ahead.
And what do we know about the importance of love from The First Shadow? It’s everything. Brenner causing Henry to lose Patty (whom Mike canonically parallels!)
is what ultimately weakens him mentally enough to let the Mindflayer possess him, driving him towards evil. Forcing Will and those around him to lose important memories of and with, especially Mike, is exactly what Vecna wants. Without strong reciprocated platonic, familial, and romantic love, he will lose. He’s already slipping away.
Part two of this theory is the references to other films. We know the duffers love to reference their favorite movies all the time—plus, they shared that giant whiteboard of film and show inspirations. Both these movies were on that board.
First we have this No Way Home parallel. For those who don’t know, No Way Home ends with Peter Parker being forgotten by everyone. Will wears this fit early on in the season, and Mike supposedly wears this shirt in the epilogue. This is memory loss plot reference 1.
Second is all the references to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. We once again have the costume parallel—
(Which also explains the ridiculous beanie.) but we also have more plot references. In Eternal Sunshine, Joel and Clementine undergo procedures to erase each other from their memories after a breakup. The place they first meet is Montauk, and after Joel realizes that he doesn’t want to erase Clementine and the memories are crumbling all around him, we are left with nothing but their first memory together where the last thing she tells him is to meet her again in Montauk. Now, what was the working title of Stranger Things? Montauk. And what was Mike’s character called in that first draft? Joel.
There’s no way all of this is merely coincidental.
We also have reports of tape merch that’s been promoted. And how do Joel and Clementine get their memories back? By playing a tape.
And remember—in the trailer, we all watched Vecna tell Will that he’ll be his spy one last time. There’s no way that this was just about a five minute peek at Max and an easy escape with El where Vecna left his most important vessel unsupervised. There’s something more here, and maybe all of this began when Vecna put Will in a trance.
Alright. So all that said, there’s one last element at play here. And maybe it’s a stretch, but it’s a thought I felt worth including: we, the viewers, are also being Vencna’d. that’s why vol 2 felt so off. Netflix hasn’t been cutting scenes; Vecna has. Remember what he says to the kids? Your memories of how you got here might be foggy. Maybe we are missing some pieces. They’re just going to be revealed to us in the finale when the characters figure out that something is missing from their memories. It’s all a puzzle. Also, the way these scenes are shot are really telling—a solid portion of them are just Jamie staring straight into the camera and talking directly at the viewer.
4th wall break. We’re complicit. We’ve been actively participating in the story since we literally started listening to WSQK. This is so much more meta than we thought.
Vecna isn’t just fucking with Will and the party. We’re part of the story. And it’s going to take unconditional, unwavering love to win our memories back.
Wow, I came back here to leave again :D Seeing so many pessimistic posts isn't fun, and seriously, the atmosphere here makes me want to get run over by a truck 🚚 Even the atmosphere on Twitter is better, which I never thought I'd say.... We're supposed to have fun too, and give each other hope
Chaos reigns, I'm just going to wait for Vol. 3, away from the internet, for the sake of my poor little brain 🫡✨️
im blocking so many people these days lol not even hateful people (i mean not JUST hateful people) but like as soon as someone says byler makes no sense or never stood a chance i just block away. the story is there it's not my fault if they decide to contradict their own set up. my only fault (if byler isn't canon in the end) is that i believed in their ability to make that set up pay off
If Avatar was able to give Kiri an insane narrative arc in just 3 hours in the middle of a war/escape, then I think they can make Byler Endgame in 2 hours during the confrontation against Vecna.
I watched Volume 2 a second time and it was extremely difficult, BUT I was able to take the time to understand the overall situation and the characters' reactions, and some things now seem obvious to me. I didn't think I'd still have hope today, but I had it for 9 years; I can still have it for another 5 days, right?
Omg bumholegate is real byler endgame confirmed
So they choose this (obviously) gay bands song, the butthole surfers (a gay joke), to be who Mike picks as not just his saving himself from Vecna song but every bodies saving the world song
Then the lyrics are something else
“Pouring like an avalanche”
Avalanche? Like snowballing into an avalanche?
“I don’t mind the sun sometimes the image it shows”
This could be a reference to the hopeful ending of byler and with will coming out Mike is being presented with a new image
“Softly spoken lies”
Will lying about Mike being his “Tammy” 👀
“Look through other people’s eyes”
Those goddamn shared looks
1996 was the year the song he chose was released in…
But thats 9 years later than the year they are currently in
Either this is bad consistency in the writing or the duffers did this on purpose
So this song choice cannot be related to it being a popular, funny song from the time because it did not exist in their time
Also even if this is just writing inconsistencies the BH. Surfers were considered a pretty controversial alt/indie/rock band and Finn himself said Mike is quite “vanilla” so this wouldnt really align with him anyways
Also remember Mike chose this as the saving the world song, byler will happen as they save the world its all coming together we just gotta believe and not loose hope 🙏
nah fuck yall I KNOW WHAT I SAW
you know what i've been "delusional" since 2019 i can be delusional for six more days
I think Will going from being hopeful just a few episodes ago to him saying "he was just my Tammy" kind of actually makes sense.
Just... walk with me.
He was just scared. Scared and terrified after whatever it was that Vecna showed him, and he rushed into things. I mean, that entire confession was kind of rushed considering the way it was fit into the plot and the reason why Will even confessed at that moment of all times. Also, I think that confession, however it was executed, was still important because I know there still exist some people who had so far absolutely refused to acknowledge Will's homosexuality. But now their eyes are clear.
Anyways, from how I perceived it, Will said everything he did in a moment of terror and fear of what might happen in the future. He did it without even confessing to the person he loves first. And if you look at it, him confessing in front of literal strangers makes sense (scarcely, but it does) when you see how everything was playing out at the time. He couldn't care less about who heard because what was important was that the people he was close with knew. Because he knows Vecna knows. And that he will most definitely use it against him and the people he loves. And Will would much rather have himself tell the others than anyone finding out from someone else, much less a monster who's hellbent on ending the world. Vecna showed him things. (That doesn't erase the fact that he was literally forced to come out, though. No one should be forced to come out under any circumstances.) But it has to mean something.
Will was forced to come out, but he still came out in a way he found comfortable in that moment. Coming out to strangers sometimes is easier than to come out to people you've known your whole lives. I've been through it. Robin has been through it with Steve too.
And Will, he has always been this scared little boy who's fear of accepting has always held him back from things. From happiness, from freedom. From love.
FROM LOVE.
That brings me to my intial point:
He hadn't accepted himself so far, but he did in Vol. 1. And then Vecna showed him those made up memories, which scared him. He didn't consider things, and just went with his confession.
But he never told Mike about it directly, or privately. The one person he loves. Which I'd understandable, of course, but it also highlights the fact that he doesn't know Mike's POV. Just like the fandom.
No one knows what goes on in that head of his.
And I think a lot of people missed his reactions when Will was coming out, because I sure as hell recommend you all to go back and see the little changes in his expression during Will's Monologue. It was clear he was figuring out things. Major things.
Because the camera kept panning to him during the monologue with a strangely particular focus:
"I don't like girls." (The camera pans to him for the first time and he sits up straight; I couldn't make the GIF for that, but you can check that scene out for yourself, I hope)
And for some of us, we just drift apart more" (In this scene, it looks like Mike is holding back tears, but it's very subtle so you'll have to give the moment your utmost focus, it happens at 53:01 btw)
"And I uh... I had this crush on someone, even though I know... I know they're not like me." (Mike looks down and then back up like he's caught on something, also, Dustin moves his gaze from Will to Mike, then back to Will which is kinda sus, happens at 53:24)
"And I am ready to show him that I am not afraid anymore." (Camera immediately pans to Mike nodding like he had decided onto something, happens at 55:54)
Don't these scenes look even a little suspicious to y'all?
Because they are raising some real big questions for me.
As to Will changing his mind in a span of three days, I think it's just because he was scared of how everything will be (due to Vecna's visions) so he just said 'fuck it I'll just do it', and was convinced that Mike could never in this lifetime like him back anyway, so he resorted to that.
Let's see, though. How everything turns out. But this post of mine better age well because it took me two hours to make and collect the timelines and make the GIFs, however small this was.
It better fucking do.
