He laughed a bit and tipped back in his chair. He said in a mocking tone, “I’ll scream, my parents will call the police. God, Veronica, you kill me.” He paused dramatically, then looked at her in the eyes even more dramatically. “No really. You actually killed me.”

"Shut up. I'm not gonna go crazy for your sick pleasure. I'll ignore you, if I have to. I will. You'll get bored and you'll leave and go to Hell where you belong."

Veronica looked away, squeezing her eyes shut, "I was supposed to die, too. I don't know why I'm still here. I deserved to die for what I helped you do." she spat, looking down at herself in the hospital bed. "I'm going to try my damnedest to redeem myself, but I can't do that if you're around-- wait... wait. You're my eternal punishment, aren't you? Whatever god there is is punishing me by having you haunt me. As if I didn't have enough ghosts in my head."

Martha passed right by him and as she let the door close behind him he slipped in to watch Veronica panic. He had no idea how any of this ghost stuff actually worked, so he was just going to assume she could se her at all times. He took off his coat a sign of trust, you see that Veronica, I trusted you and sat down where Martha had been.

"You know, you never really answered me."

She blinked once, twice, then squeezed her eyes shut, willing him to go away.

"You're dead," she said quietly, "I'm not gonna go crazy for you. You're not there." 

She opened her eyes. He sat in Martha's chair, smirking at her. She froze. "I'll call the nurses. Don't think I won't." Veronica warned, voice wavering. What were they going to do, though? 'Hey, the ghost of my mentally unstable ex boyfriend is haunting me; call an exorcist?'

"Whatever you say," Heather shrugged, deciding not to push it any further, and headed off towards her old friends. "Hey, guys, remember me?" she said as she sat down. Hopefully they do. She would just have to try to not be incredibly mean, which was basically the only think she had been doing for the past few years… this was going to be weird.

She glanced over at Veronica, who was sitting down at an empty table. “Are you new? You should come over here!” one of Heather’s old friends called out.

Well, there goes trying to ignore Veronica.

Veronica froze, blinking, "I, uh..." 

Who else are you gonna sit with, numbskull? Heather Chandler scoffed, Us?

"...yeah. That'd be cool. Thanks." she walked over, tentatively taking a seat beside Heather Duke. "I'm Veronica. Sawyer. Heather's... classmate." Was friend even the proper word, anymore?

"Ah, a safe game. Personally, I think I’ve already put my leg into enough emotional and physical damage for a lifetime." he laughed, nodding his head. "Soon, Veronica. Maybe tomorrow? I’m not a busy person. Also, my lips are sealed."

“If being AWARE of my own face and body is being conceited, then yes. I, Augustus Waters, is conceited.” Again, he laughed. “I’ve never really spoken to them. Probably once, but I’m sure they didn’t like me much.”

"Hmm? I don't get it." She shot him a strange look before it hit her. Oh god, he was the kid with the leg. "Shit... I... didn't mean to offend you? I'm really sorry."

"Tomorrow? You're on." she grinned, shifting her weight. "I'll meet you over here after school." she smiled, "And good for you. You don't use it like the Heathers do. They know they're pretty and ruin people's lives with their beauty. Including mine. But, apparently, I'm pretty enough to be a Heather. Doesn't mean I'm conceited though."

"They talk about you sometimes," she blurted, and wished she hadn't. "They think you're really very. Except, uh... they don't handle abnormalities too well. If you know what I mean. I don't mind it, though! I-- shit, I should just shut up, shouldn't I?"

The look on her face when she knocked the cigarette out of his mouth was worth the lost cigarette. He tried to catch her before she reached the ground, just to avoid any unnecessary injury, but he had always been a sucker for other people’s pain. He smiled and left her with a kiss.

It almost took him forever to find the hospital room she was in, and when she did, Martha was in the room with her. Fucking great. He decided to open the door a crack so that he could hear them talking.

"You don't remember what happened? They found you after the wake passed out on the sidewalk." she played with her hair, "Oh. Heather's in the cafeteria right now; you want anything? I could go get her."

"That'd be very, actually. A bottle of water would be nice; my throat is killing me."

"Okay. Um... Veronica?" she as quietly, standing in the doorway, about to head out, "Why'd you faint?"

She took a deep breath. "I thought I... I saw someone."

Martha nodded knowingly, and walked out.
