74-78/100 Days of Productivity
I’ve been not posting for two reasons:
First, I was rejected from that job I really, really wanted. And it really threw me off my game. I knew as just a PhD candidate that I’d be a longshot, but I felt like my interview went really well and my research aligned with that requirements of the position so I sort of thought my lack of Dr. wouldn’t be that defining of a factor.
Second, as I spiraled post-job thing, I started thinking about how much time I now have to work on my dissertation. (If I’d gotten the job, I was going to finish the diss over the summer and graduate in December. But to keep my TA job, I need to keep my student status which means dragging my diss out for until spring semester. Barf.) And, upon reflection of how much time I now have, I realized that a lot didn’t work in my dissertation. So I’ve been rewriting big chunks of my first chapter to see if I can fix it.
The changes include getting to talk about Carmelita Torres, a 17 y/o who led the 1917 Bath Riots on the U.S.-Mexico border, protesting the inhuman treatment of she and her fellow workers (servants) as they were stripped naked and bathed in kerosene to rid them of lice (read: they were doused in gasoline because white ppl thought the Mexicans were too dirty and would spread disease).
