Harry arriving at the Another Man A/W Launch in London, England on October 6, 2016.
That the world has grown comfortable with the sight of Harry Styles with short hair can be attributed to the man behind his transformative cut, Anthony Turner. Last night, Styles stepped out with an abbreviated slick-back that looked just as at home on his head as his signature chest-grazing waves once did. But it wasnβt always this way. The way Turner tells it, when Styles first parted ways with his hair in April of this year, it was quite a shock. βHis jaw dropped to the floor,β says Turner of the moment he lopped off Stylesβs lengthy ponytail.
Preparing for a role in the forthcoming World War II drama Dunkirk, Styles knew heβd have to lob off a significant amount of hair, so when he arrived in his hometown for a photo shoot, he was game to lose length. Though it didnβt stop the actual cut from being a dramatic momentβas well as a family affair. βHis parents were there,β Turner recalls. βThey own a pub in town.β Stylesβs mother was quietly cheering on the transformation from a distance. βShe was like, βIs that all youβre going to do?β β Turner remembers with a laugh. βShe wanted him to be neatened up.β
Once the initial shock had worn off, Styles βreally got into it,β Turner says. The singer, he recalls, βhe was very articulate and he knew what we were trying to achieveβ; with Stylesβs input, Turner even tailored the length of his β60s-ish mop to make it more authentic.
As the hair continues to evolve, Turner says that so long as they keep his hair in a rock βnβ roll genre, Styles can pull it off. βHeβs a cheeky quintessential Brit boyβan absolute pleasure to work with, which you donβt want to hear, but itβs true,β he says. From a shoulder-grazing shag to a Mick Jaggerβesque mop and now the Elvis-worthy slick-back, with each iteration, Styles looks inexplicably more like himself. βLuckily,β Turner says, βHarry is a very handsome boy, so he can carry it.β Were truer words ever spoken? - VOGUE
