Prompt #9: “Don’t you ever do that again!”
It’s a perfect night for street hockey. Jonny and Kaner have already finished their multiplication homework and are now practicing their shooting accuracy, using plastic horseshoes as the targets because that’s all Jonny’s mom would let them tape to the hockey nets. Jonny already knocked one horseshoe off so he officially has the hardest shot, but Kaner has hit more targets than Jonny so they’re actually tied.
David comes running out of the house with his hockey stick. Jonny is usually okay with David playing with them because even though he’s six, he tries really hard and always listens to Jonny’s rules. But this is Jonny and Kaner’s time, and they have to be the best. But Jonny promised his mom he would always try to include David, so when David asks if he can play Jonny says “sure” at the same time Patrick says “of course”.
Jonny explains the rules to David and David nods excitedly, then Jonny goes to fix the horseshoes because they’re starting to get a little crooked. Then Jonny hears Kaner yell “Jonny, watch out!” right before a ball whizzes right in front of Jonny’s nose.
He looks up, frowning and angry (and a little scared, but mostly angry), and sees his brother looking guilty.
“David! Don’t you ever do that again!” Jonny scolds. “You never shoot when someone is fixing something! I should tell mom!”
David drops his eyes and puts his stick in front of his face like he does when he doesn’t want to get picked first at practice. “Sorry, Jonny,” he says quietly.
“Jonny,” Patrick says almost as quietly behind Jonny, and when Jonny turns around Kaner is waving him over. “He was just trying to show me the new shot he had learned. It was an accident,” he explains.
Jonny’s stomach drops a little. He knows he can be hard on David and even kids Jonny and Pat’s age, but he doesn’t mean it badly. Kaner helps with that a lot. He nods and smiles a little shyly at Kaner, then turns back to David.
“Wanna show me that shot you learned?” He says encouragingly.
David immediately perks up and stomps his feet like he does when he’s really excited, then chokes up on his hockey stick a bit more than usual and only shoots the ball with the flick of his wrists. The ball hits the top right horseshoe and they all cheer, Jonny especially.
“That was really good, David!” Kaner says.
They all practice flicking their wrists more, and by the end of the night Jonny’s hit almost as many horseshoes as Kaner. Almost.
