i dont think you really understand the importance of money or the stress of money until you’re working hard for it and it still disappears at the same rate and you still have the same problems as you did when you had a student loan/pocket money etc but this time you’re spending literally 25% of your life/week working just to have a roof over your head to shelter you when you’re not working/food to feed you in between working/water to keep you clean before working/clothes to keep you smart whilst working etc etc
and all the while still trying to follow the career you want to follow and having to pour money into that before you start making money from it and also putting all your spare time towards that.
do not degrade me as a barmaid before you learn about how being a barmaid enables me to build my dream career in a world where, even if you work as hard as you can throughout your education, towards a career you want, you’ll still find yourself in a minimum wage job serving people in suits who mock you for your job as a barmaid.
gah gah feeling this today

Fred Hüning: “Is the nearness you usually have to your family a benefit to producing good work or is it more a hindrance because to judge your own work you need distance?”
Doug Dubois: “Distance is a tricky term for photographers and artists. Didn’t Robert Capa famously say something like, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough?” I’d like to think he was referring more to empathy than mere physical proximity. Your question seems to imply the opposite: if your pictures aren’t good enough, perhaps you need some distance from your work or from your subject. I think both are true and photographers constantly move between engagement and detachment, sometimes in the time it takes to raise a camera and snap the shutter.
The bulk of the photographs of my family were made when I was no long living at home. I photographed for concentrated periods during visits. I used the time in between visits to look over and edit the work. It also helped me see the more subtle changes in my parents’ relationship and my siblings’ lives.”

this really struck me
