gyakusai etc for translated screenshots from gyakuten saiban and explanations etc. i take requests if youre curious about anything
localisation fails for incessant whingeing about how awful the american translation of gyakusai is and proof to anyone who keeps insisting its good somehow
"whats wrong with the translation of gyakuten saiban?" masterpost organised and very easy to read with tdlr
forrmerally beneaththebloodylake which i just used cause i couldnt think of a better one but all the ones ive tried are even worse so i might just change it back
hate mail gallery for anon hate or the cloest anyone will send me (please feel free to send your own)
currently watching (or mostly what i started and havent finished): daomubiji zanghaihua, 九条の大罪、shin irang law office, lockwood and co, miu 404, justice in the dark, nanbu dangan, psych hunter, one cent theif, maybe some i forgot. finished 容疑者xの献身、reading rivers of london stone and sky
i didbt used to be into romance but tumblr mentally conditioned me into being a fudanshi
more stuff i enjoyed but not in fandom: doctor who, 99.9刑事専門弁護士, sammys childrens day, guardian, antihero, supernatural, oh my ghost clients, bungo stray dogs, the spirealm, rivers of london (books), crime and punishment (novel), under the skin, red king, everybody else burns, later i laughed, red dwarf, daomu biji, hobbit and lord of the rings (only the books) etc etc
not me considering going to redacted and back (with the full trainfare) twice in one day. the first time was pretty bad though i dunno if i should go out (and get ignored by my housemates again) or itll just make it seem worse
i really dont get why the gyakusai anime is so hated in the fandom here. the animation is clunky sometimes and some bits are paced badly and some changes might not not the best, but at least as extra if youve played the games i thought its really enjoyable. i really like the extra bits they added and how it expands on the characters, and i also just like seeing them in a more visualised medium where it seems 'closer' compared to a lot left to imagination with the more limited game visuals. overall i thought its a pretty good adaption
despite naruhodo and minukis father daughter relationship being portrayed as unconventional with minuki being quite independent etc, and that having a daughter helped naruhodo emotionally, i wonder if he avoided exposing her to his emotional vulnerability or not. i cant remember if it was ever shown
he seemed to tend to do that with mayoi, at least in 123 when she was an older teenager. though a lot of the time his vulnerable moments were cause of mayoi being kidnapped and stuff, and hed avoid showing vulnerability in general. but at least i got the impression that he sort of treated her like a kid that he had to look out for, and wouldnt saddle her with his problems?
from mayoi and harumi in 123 he seemed fairly suited to dealing with kids, even though theyre not his kids and mayoi isnt that young, he generally seemed aware that theyre not fully grown adults and adjusted the way he treated them
so at least in my headcanon, i think that although naruhodo and minuki are obviously close (especially as single parent and only child) and minuki is quite mature, though he might show some things, i dont think hed be fully open about his emotions to minuki (though that doesnt mean she wouldnt be aware). i think that for her sake hed try to appear more positive, which is probably what that line about her helping him emotionally actually meant, not that hed expose her to all his troubles
We fucking get it, weeaboo snob. Get your head out of your cunt.
no idea what this is about but im legit curious. your the one who needs to get your head out of your cunt though mate im not a fucking weeb. but please feel free to send more hate mail, id genuinly be thrilled to get to continue the argument
you don't have to answer this because it's a personal question, but how old are you? just wanted to check that i'm not beefing with a minor whose mind hasn't matured yet. because the more i read what you have to say, the more convinced i am that it is unfortunately the case, and everyone who has ever talked to you has been punching down this entire time.
if you're actually in your 30s, that's a relief at first glance, but then wtf is your 30 year old arse doing on tumblr annoying people and grousing over gyakuten saiban (henceforth referred to as ace attorney)? surely you have better things to do in your life than that. surely you would have spent at least some of those many years you've been alive figuring out how to talk to people without being called insufferable.
just because mitsurugi/edgeworth is still loved despite being a prick in his 20s doesn't mean it will work out for you. on the contrary, he is loved because he has substance and emotional development, which are two things you clearly lack. if your takeaway from ace attorney is that being a prick is well and fine and rewarded, i don't know how you got to that point of fanboyism without knowing how to read.
be better. and thank you for tagging your posts gyakusai rather than ace attorney, because whenever i browse the main tag i would rather not be reminded of your existence. peace and love <3
sorry but i dont take guidance for my behaviour from video games
im 21. and the reason a fictional character is liked is because hes fictional and people dont have to deal with him in real life. please dont patronise me.
if it was an actual rude comment i left, then sorry. i used to be ruder but i try not to do that now. if you just dont like my posts, then i dont have anything to apologise for. theres nothing wrong with publicly posting my opinion even if its negative. 'rude' would be saying everyone who likes, eg the singer is a loser. i just said, eg i dont like his music, or eg his music is bad.
and no, i dont actually have anything better to do except watch tv. youre right about that one you can criticise me there. its even completely my own fault. but that has absolutely nothing to do with my behaviour here. this blog is only a small part of my life. i dont come here to make people like me. im not pretending that my behaviour is great, but i have no intention of changing it. sorry
and i tag both, and ill keep doing so just because of you
I’m delighted to interview the head localiser of the new release of the games now called Snazzy Salesman. My name is Suchen Dique, and I’ve always been a fan of Ace Attorney. I can’t believe it’s being rereleased, even better adjusted to the tastes of us Westerners than before! Well, bear with me now as the Head Localiser, Smegg Koque, comes to join me!
Suchen: Hello Smegg Koque, and welcome to Wankwatch! I’m Suchen Dique, and I’m delighted to meet you!
Smegg: Hello Suchen! I’m delighted to finally introduce the long awaited Snazzy (Used Car) Salesman to you all!
Suchen: I can’t wait! So first, what made you decide to relocalise Ace Attorney? I’ve been a big fan for ever, and I always appreciated how well adjusted they were to suit the tastes of us Americans! It was almost like I was playing an American game!
Smegg: Yes, of course they were very well written so that Americans can understand, without all those confusing foreign references. It made it much easier for us to relate.
Suchen: I really agree!
Smegg: But, we believe that a lawyer in a court just isn’t a compelling setting for the modern Western audiences. It’s aimed at normal people, not lawyers. We were thinking, it was too confusing, always having to figure out what the lawyers are doing. So we decided to adapt it to something most of our audience are more familiar with.
Suchen: Oh, you’re so right! Why didn’t I think of that? Just like the original localisation, but even more! I didn’t know I needed it til I heard it! So, what are you localising it too?
Smegg: After a lot of careful consideration, we decided to localise lawyer to salesmen.
Suchen: Oh, brilliant! Everyone’s had experience working selling something or other! Tell me the details!
Smegg: Our protagonist, Lyche (pronounced ‘leech’) Gottcha, is now a used car salesman!
Suchen: Ooh, I like the new name too!
Smegg: We weren’t sure at first because of the confusing pronunciation, but we think this name really captures the spirit of the series!
Suchen: It really does! But I can’t help but say, a used car salesman is a bold choice! It’s very different to a lawyer.
Smegg: It might seem that way, but you see, lawyers are just the set dressing. It doesn’t really matter what the specific job is, it was really written as quite interchangeable. And taking advantage of that, we’ve localised it in a way that really conveys the series to our audience in the most effective way.
Suchen: Oh, good thinking! It really doesn’t matter what’s in the original series, when you can localise it to something you think works better! So, tell us about the other characters!
Smegg: The rival’s job has been changed from prosecutor to Sales Arbiter, to better fit the new setting.
Suchen: That’s quite a different dynamic, isn’t it?
Smegg: It’s the equivalent of prosecutor for used car salesman, so we feel it can convey the meaning better. Like, a prosecutor is a bit obscure, isn’t it? Some people might not know what it is.
Suchen: Too right, you need to make it so people without a degree in law can understand!
Smegg: Just what we were thinking. So, the Sales Arbiter in the first game’s name is Barnaby Rimmings.
Suchen: It sounds so cool, really captures the vibes of the original! What about the other characters?
Smegg: We had a lot of trouble with the judge, because of course, salesmen don’t have judges. We thought of just leaving him as the judge, but then I thought of an even better way. We’re adapting for the American audiences, right? And everyone knows Americans love religion. So, we decided to make him the pope!
Suchen: That’s such a creative way of dealing with the difficulties of localisation!
Smegg: And, we decided to give him a name, to make him more relatable. It was difficult to come up with one, but we were finally sold on Muhammad Imam.
Suchen: Interesting name for a pope!
Smegg: It really gives off the feeling of religion, don’t you think?
Suchen: Of course! But does it give off the feeling of Catholics? Muhammad is a very famous prophet in Islam, and Imam is also a religious position in Islam?
Smegg: Yes well, it’s not too big a difference, they’re both about religion! No one cares about being that nitpicky about the specifics.
Suchen: So right! I’m wondering, has the pope come to visit America, or are our salesmen going to visit the pope?
Smegg: We thought about that a lot. Of course the first priority is to have American characters in America for our American audience. But, Christianity is also very familiar to our American audience, so we figured, that we could set it in the Vatican and it’d be just as good.
Suchen: ….It’s a bit foreign….
Smegg: Of course, everyone is an American citizen who grew up in America. And, in The Snazzy Salesman universe, the Vatican has had a lot more American immigrants, so it’s basically America.
Suchen: Oh, I’m relieved. So, what about Lyche’s assistant?
Smegg: She’s called Lilly Abbott. Her family are immigrants who moved to the Vatican and converted to Christianity. By the way, her cousin is Faith Abbott, her sister is Clancy Abbott, and her ancestor is Luna Abbot.
Suchen: Great idea! But I’m curious, why did you change the first names? They don’t have puns in them.
Smegg: Of course, the Japanese ones are too foreign. And I just felt like changing them to ones I like the sound of.
Suchen: Well, this is all sounding great! But I’m sure you’re aware that some people will be skeptical about all these big changes you’re making. What do you have to say to reassure them?
Smegg: We’ve been very careful to ensure that everything is adapted thoughtfully so that our audience can understand and relate to it.
Suchen: Of course, this is localisation. Even though it was originally lawyers, this is a great equivalent.
Smegg: Yes, I’m very glad you agree. Some people are purists and not happy with these changes, but these people simply don’t understand localisation.
Suchen: Luckily the audience of Ace Attorney are already fans of a localised game, so I’m sure they’ll love it! It sounds like you did a great job! I’m so excited to play Snazzy! (Used Car) Salesman!
from figuring out the timeline realised in gs4 naruhodos literally wearing a hoodie all through the middle of summer? it literally gets over 35° and pretty humid
link to spreadsheet: (theres more character ages and i probably made mistakes or forgot something and might edit it). btw its not meant to be blurry
notes:
the years based on DL6 never seem to be relevent again, so I've based the main timeline on comparrison to the games. I've only included the first day for multi day episodes/trials. I haven't included the prequel games at all. I might have made mistakes.
I got most dates from youtube playthroughs of various versions and don't know if anything changed in rerelease. naruhodo's age in 3.1 was changed becuase it originally said 20 but he should've been 21. I've added Naruhodo's age for a reference menioned in the games, but there's actually no character whose age is mentioned in every game. also sometimes Yahari's age was inconsistent which suggested he was almost a year younger. but for other chracters they haven't adjsuted by time of year, only by game
btw wtf are people usually spending fucking 6000○ on one night out??? id heard that before but i didnt really beleive it. and what the fuck is it with evenly splitting the bill??? usually you seperate it?
