“I’ve got enough liquor to last a lifetime.” Sean announced, passing over one of several glasses. “This is a nice event and all.. But I’m sure it would be more interesting with a buzz in your head.”
“Perfect timing, Sean— I was just about to circle back to the bar.” Evelyn accepted the glass with a smile, bringing it to her lips almost immediately to sip it. “Yes, a nice buzz definitely wouldn’t hurt no matter how nice this event is.”

“I won’t lie, a part of me would absolutely love to see that happening. The mayor feels a little too bright for allowing this gala anyway. He’d deserve a drink in the face. Do you not have someone around to keep you from those mistakes to happen?”
“You would, wouldn’t you? Well, there’s definitely a chance it might happen, especially since I do not have anyone with me to keep me from doing something like that, no. All you can do now is wait and see how many drunken mistakes I can make in one night.”

“I didn’t miss your date did I? I don’t want to step on toes, but I’m inclined to bring every stunning woman here a drink.”
“Ironically enough, I think I did all the convincing.”
“You didn’t, no. I’m here on my own tonight, so I’ll take all the drinks I can get. —Oh, really? Well, I’m glad you convinced her then. What have you two been up to anyway? I haven’t seen you since... Before Thanksgiving, I think?”
gail-interrupted:
❝I’m fine – - great, actually! Even better now that I’ve run into you.❞ What would normally have been a half-hearted pleasantry from anyone else came off as sincere from Gail Rogers. Her smile and the way she managed to focus on Evelyn as if she was the only person in the room spoke volumes of how happy she was to have bumped into a friend, even though the topic shifted to Rowan. ❝I’m a little surprised you found him near my house. He’s not been livin’ with me for… a few weeks, I guess? Did you ever manage to find that guy who found Daisy for you?❞
“You look really great, so I can’t say that I’m surprised.” She said with a light grin as she watched Gail curiously. There was definitely something different about her, but Evelyn couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was— at least it seemed like a good kind of different. “Really? Where does he live now?” She asked, eyebrows drawing together in quiet surprise that quickly vanished again when Gail asked about Daisy’s rescuer. “I did actually... I ran into him a couple of weeks ago, just sort of out of the blue.”

“Look, Evelyn, I’m sure you’ve got the best intentions here, but trust me. There’s no way I’d enjoy myself at that thing.”
“Okay... —I’m not gonna force you to go, I just think it’s a shame if you’re here all by yourself. Maybe I’ll come see you later. I don’t know how long I’m gong to stay at the party anyway.”
Her promises, like her cigarettes, barely hanging by the tip of her lips, turning to ash and smoke with every blow, turning to emptiness.

"No no, that's okay, don't worry about that. You're okay though, right? No, I don't think he was in the mood to come. I didn't want to force him, even though I'm sure he would've had a good time. I met him on my way here, not that far from your place."

“It does. I’m surprised, and still waiting for the grant mess up. Something has to go terribly wrong at gala with free refreshments. If there is no gossip for entire Bentley to talk about tomorrow, this is not  real small town festive.”
"Oh, I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later. Maybe if I keep circling back to the bar at this pace, I'll be the one messing up, tripping over my own feet or spilling a drink on the mayor or something like that. Except, it'll probably be something a lot worse."

“Thank you, Gail, you’re always too nice to my ego— not that you’ll ever hear me complain about that. I’m glad you came too! I feel like I haven’t seen you since Thanksgiving. How have you been? Oh, I’m good, I’m having a nice time too with all these bubbles. No, I’m flying solo. I tried to convince Rowan to come, but he wasn’t budging.”

“That doesn’t sound very Christmas-y of him. I’m glad you made it out with your necklace and yourself in one piece. You should go get a drink, it might take the edge off after that.”
