After treating the 47 consecutive bullet wounds that were inflicted upon me by the finale as a Scott Springwell enjoyer- I think I can finally put some thoughts I had about it into words.

Namely how I think the story of Scott Springwell is about loss, resilience, love and legacy. As a character Scott was shaped by the losses he had endured in his life. First being the murder of his mother before his very eyes and the simultaneous awakening of his magic that protected him from meeting the same fate. Next was his father, who became deathly ill not long after Scott was drafted to the Blue kingdom. Scott was by his side as he died, his magical capabilities had grown but were ultimately still not enough to save his father. The most recent heart crushing loss for him was Nom. Nom’s fate was decided from the moment he ate that resin piece, and Scott was forced to watch his deterioration and live in fear of Nom’s possible corruption at the hands of the Creaking King. In the end, Nom did ensure that he was not taken over by the Creaking King, but ends up withering away all the same. There was no spell or potion Scott could’ve used to save him, and he damn sure tried everything until the very end. It was a tragedy where all he could do once again was just sit back and *watch* it happen.

And yet… even through these losses, he gets back up again. The feeling of loss can feel like the end of the world, and in Scott’s incredibly short lifespan as a half-elf he had to endure that feeling earlier and more frequently than many an unlucky soul would wish. Despite that however, he keeps going and carries the memory of those he has lost with him. The love that they had for him lives on within him, and he assures their legacy in turn by living by what they each taught him and giving that same love to others in turn.

From his mother’s gentle nature and optimistic outlook on life that Scott ever admired and was determined to emulate in the friendships and connections he formed with others. To his father’s encouraging spirit that drove him onwards into becoming a truly powerful mage that could stand up to an ancient evil and protect others. To Nom’s fierce devotion to the ones he loved so dearly that it killed him but spurred on a blaze of resolve within Scott to live his life. Not just for Nom’s sake or for his parents, but for himself.

The story of Scott Springwell may not be the happiest, but nevertheless it is a story about the strength of a burdened heart and hope found on an ocean’s horizon alongside good company. How love remains in the hearts and minds of those who care and how it is forever cherished in the flowers that bloom and the stars that shine.

thinking about. nom and autonomy. specifically, nom's death and autonomy.

autonomy is a big theme throughout nom's story - he spends all his life feeling like he has no control over what happens to him, and then for all of bannerfall (and going back to when he broke his oath) he is desperately scrabbling to claw back some of that control. he gets accused of being power-hungry a couple times (in particular by the creaking king and also most of red kingdom) but its not about power for nom. he already feels he has power. hes confident to the point of arrogance from the beginning and doesnt even want to be king while hes the king. its always about control.

but the type of control that nom wants - the ability to dictate exactly what will happen and how things will go unilaterally - is impossible. every action he takes to try (saving 4C/lying about his oath/macing and exiling 4C/trying to strongarm Katie into coming back/eating the resin) makes everything worse for him and everyone around him. he cannot as one flawed person have the final say on everything. even everything that affects him. he was trampling over his loved ones own autonomy in the process - thats ultimately what he apologizes to katie for. I'm sorry for taking that choice from you.

but at the end - when his chickens start coming home to roost - nom does have control. he has control over himself. the creaking king has a hold on him - but he never manages to coerce nom into making the choices he wants him to. nom repeats over and over that he will not let the creaking king use him to hurt other people. and he doesnt! he walks into the altar room with sausage and they barely get offered the whole deal before he rejects it out of hand. they make it to the heart and the king tells him he has no choice, and he makes one anyways - to die rather than let people get hurt trying to save him, or, worse, hurt them to save himself.

and at the very end, he didnt even wait for his time to run out. he chose where he wanted to be, the people he wanted to be with, said what he wanted to say to them, and then chose to go out on his own terms.

and he didnt get what he wanted! he didnt end the war, or keep katie and 4C from fighting, or save mae and scott further heartbreak. scott asks him how he feels and he answers Like I tried. because in the end the only thing he can control are the choices he makes. and he chose to try and save people.

the creaking king's power may have been what killed him. but nom's death, from beginning to end, was the result of his own choices. he got his final say and his redemption all in one.
