"Uhhhh, yeah, yeah, good point," Hercules said, brow wrinkling as he thought about the fact that there would have to be a colour scheme, right? "Honestly, you'd be better off if my friend was still here," he shook his head ruefully.

Ken would have been able to tell her clearly what would have been a good idea - probably with an anecdote or two about how things had been when he himself had worked for the Hauntley! Instead, poor Veronika was lumbered with Hercules.

"I guess Halloween stuff is often orange or black, right? So you need something that works with them..." He trailed off. What those colours were he absolutely didn't know.

"Your friend has a good sense with decorating then?" Veronika asked. That was nice. Veronika had a decent sense of it, but sometimes it was difficult bringing that vision together entirely. Especially when only certain things were selling for what people thought the season was.

Orange and black were certainly the classical colors. "Mhm... orange fits well with a sunset sort of color scheme too. So blending the orange of Halloween with a sunset-y beach style theme perhaps? Oh that's brilliant really. If I could connect those pieces well."

It helped to talk this out with someone. The dots were coming together a lot better than if Veronika had simply been doing it on her own.

"No, I was looking for some halloween decor for my dorm room but it seems to not be the season just now." Kim realised maybe that's what the blonde was looking for too.

"Maybe that doesn't help you either considering the theme you're looking for." Dead end. Or not.

They might have some stuff if they really did a good browse for it. "It makes sense to me but I definitely think you spooked the shop assistant, pardon my pun."

"I think if we have a really good browse then we may find some things in that theme. Anything in particular you're looking for?"

Oh! So this girl was also looking for Halloween decor. That was nice! Not many people thought about these things so early. Veronika found it encouraging that someone else was interested in this sort of quest too.

"I mean it does kind of help. We both are looking for some elements of the spooky. I suppose I could also use some of the spooky decorations we already have at the Hauntley." But Veronika did like finding new things that were charming and unique. So much of the Hauntley now had Snow's wonderful touch to it.

Veronika wanted to add her own charms to it as well. "Ah well. I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. I'm not very good at the subtle approach. Never have been." Ironic perhaps for a vampire, but it wasn't as if Veronika had to hide her status since... well it had been quite some time since she was exposed. "I want to find some table decorations, napkins and dishes and such things. But also for the walls. So something to hang up too. And maybe even something for the front lawn. So many options really. What about you? What specifically are you hoping for for your dorm room?"

Drizella eyed the gnome again. 

“Y’know, I was gonna give it to my sister to annoy her — she’s one of those people who has to have a perfectly manicured lawn. But it’s growing on me. I don’t have a lawn though. Just a flat. Might put it outside the door though. Why not?”

She shrugged.

“So what’s this whole Halloween in the summer thing you’re planning?” she asked. “Bedroom makeover? Or a party?”

Veronika couldn't help but snort.

That was a fun little thought. She didn't have any siblings herself, but she would probably delight in putting some quirky gnome on someone's lawn to bother them. Perhaps Gem. She did like to butt heads with him.

"Why not indeed? You are allowed to decorate as you see fit. A gnome by the doormat would be a charming little addition. It would make your flat distinct too." Which Veronika thought was a nice idea. "I want to host a party. A summerween sort of thing with festivity but enough spooky for the Hauntley guests to appreciate as well. Thus the combined theme here."

Her bedroom could also probably use a makeover, but seeing as Veronika didn't spend much time there, it didn't especially matter.

Snow did her absolute best to guard her expression, nodding thoughtfully along with Veronika as though she was making several interesting points about some pressing current event.

On the inside though... Snow was a little hurt! She wanted to pout. She had worked hard on her boneblood and she really had gotten excellent reviews so far...

But no, that was okay, she knew it could take some getting used to. This could be some useful feedback.

Snow snatched onto that reframing and kept it at the forefront of her mind. "That makes sense," she said. "If you have any--advice! Or requests! I'm always trying to perfect the recipe. And I have heard it can depend on the bones I use. There's kind of a sweet spot. You want to use old bones but not too old, because it can take longer for the same nutrients to develop in the blood. So hm, I wonder where I got these bones.." She pursed her lips. "I do think it was from a distant unmarked grave Wolf found for me, so these might be-- really ancient!"

Yes Snow, blame the bones, not your magic. If Snow could, she'd roll her eyes at herself.

Advice?

Veronika wasn't sure how to advise on the boneblood. It just tasted...off. It was like... hmm. How could she describe it to Snow. She had no idea if the bones made a difference with age and how the taste would be. But there was a certain lack of flavor somehow. Or substance to it.

"Ah I know. It's not dissimilar to when a human might eat one of those... what are they, leaning cuisines? One of those dietary sad meals that they tell you will help you lose weight but then they also just... don't bring out nearly as much flavor as a regular meal." At least she was pretty sure. Veronika didn't need to eat human food and hadn't for a long time.

But she thought this might be an apt comparison. "But perhaps if the bones were a bit more fresh...that could make a difference. I do not know. It would be difficult to test. Especially since I imagine taking from a fresh grave would be even more frowned upon."

Well, Herc didn't know that he could really blame the employees for struggling to put it together. Summer was hardly the ordinary time of year for people to be focusing on creepy halloween decorations, was it? But it felt like a bad idea to disagree outright.

"Well, I suppose they maybe haven't got a lot of their seasonal stuff in for Halloween yet. Won't see that 'til September or so... maybe you could uh, find some of their summery stuff that you can combine with some more traditional Halloween things?"

That would be a good solution, right? Surely the Inn would have some creepy Halloween stuff lying around in storage anyway?

That was true. Seasonal things for Halloween likely wouldn't really come into the store until September. How annoying. Veronika had a vision for now that she thought was quite charming! And she was sure the vampires currently staying at the Hauntley would appreciate it.

"That's true I suppose. We do have some nice spooky decorations at the Hauntley already to combine it. Hmm... Danke," Veronika said after a moment. "I simply need to be more creative." Not a bad thing really. And she had the time to be after all.

"I suppose then it becomes a question of which summery decor won't clash too hard with the darker. Combines better. What do you think? Color wise?" Why not ask this guy his opinions there, since she had already asked him about the other things.

Well, Snow did not come up with this-- once, bonebleeding had been a regular practice for many necromancers and had been used for vampires along with other purposes...

But Snow didn't bother with that history. She still appreciated the compliment, and she grinned while watching Veronika eagerly. Oh, she hoped that she liked it!

But Veronika wrinkled her nose.

Oh dear.

Snow's shoulders fell. She knew that the taste could be an adjustment, so she wasn't going to take it personally.

"It's okay if you don't like that," she said at once, offering a sympathetic smile. "Though I've been told that it is an acquired taste! Many vampires get used to it," she offered.

Was it? Was it really okay?

Because considering how badly Veronika had been managing feeding in other ways, it felt like a disaster. That the taste was this jarringly different was... discouraging. She frowned down at the drink and took another sip, just in case maybe after a sip or two she could perhaps adjust to the strange taste of it.

"I don't know... perhaps it's because I've had more human blood from the vein in recent years than I should have but this..." She wrinkled her nose. "It really is an entirely different taste. Somehow even harder to adjust to than trying animal blood." And of course Veronika had tried that avenue as well.

"You're trying to plan some Scooby Doo party," he observed. He wasn't completely correct, but he didn't want to give her the impression he cared enough to get all the details right. In the party planner types, that trait was held in high value and that was the last thing he wanted to be to her. "I think I overheard enough to know. Plus, you asked me what I thought. Am I supposed to lie and save your feelings?"

"No, I'm trying to do a mix of spooky and summer energy. Scooby Doo is just an example on the look," Veronika replied. This boy wasn't very good at listening, now was he?

Oh well. That was her mistake in asking a stranger his opinion instead of simply trusting her own. And Veronika knew that it could turn out lovely.

She sighed. "I do not need my feelings spared. Thank you for expressing yourself so bluntly I suppose." Veronika was still going to do her own thing. "Any other opinions you want to express while you're at it?"

"Oh!" Hercules said out loud, his mouth forming the shape rather comically as he realised what she meant - and then all too quickly springing shut as he realised where he recognised the woman from.

Right? He'd heard some commotion about one of the owners being in town?

Despite all the warmth that the memory of Bruce still gave him towards Snow Song ... he couldn't help the way he swallowed.

"Well, yeah, I guess if you want a summer spooky vibe then that sounds like the perfect inspiration," he agreed, nodding and trying to recover his smile.

"I hear they're doing one for Netflix, as a live action show."

She could hear this man's heart rate. It seemed he wasn't altogether comfortable in her presence. Not especially shocking when people knew what she was. But it was fine. It wasn't as if Veronika was going to do anything.

"It is isn't it? The problem is the employees here are having a hard time finding anything along those lines." A frustrating problem, but Veronika supposed she could order something online. It just was something she'd wanted to avoid because she did like buying local and supporting local businesses.

"Netflix...hmm. I feel as if they've already done the best version of the characters. Not sure what another live action series is supposed to do. But oh well. That is not my concern."

Veronika Hauntley was a child of means. Her parents were the owners of the massive Hauntley hotel chain that spanned all over the globe. She never wanted for anything. And while she spent most of her childhood with nannies and tutors and not with her parents, Veronika never really had much of a complaint. She got the toys she wanted, she went to the best schools, and she made the most incredible connections.

Of course because of her circumstances, Veronika had taken a lot of things for granted. She used her very nice credit card to go on extravagant shopping excursions. Or she and a few friends flew out to the Hamptons in a private jet and vacationed there. She had no sense of money or anything. She worked for her parents' company, but really only in a limited capacity. 

Her parents had given her grief for her behavior before, warning her that they would cut her off if she didn’t start to handle money more responsibly. Of course Veronika hadn’t taken that too seriously, and she ended up jetting off again. This time to Miami for some wild parties where she was photographed making out with a few different gorgeous women there and taking ecstasy. 

This of course was the last straw for her parents. They immediately cut off all her funds, her credit cards, everything and left her stranded in Miami. Veronika was left reeling, with only a bit of cash she’d picked up for one minor thing. She scrambled. But she had no money to fly back to confront her parents now either. But how could she get back as fast as possible? Well simple…she’d become a flight attendant. That was easy enough… right?

After a horrendously miserable experience with training and all, she was finally given her first big flight: a flight from Miami to London, which would bring her that much closer to reuniting with her family. At least it would have if the plane actually made it to its destination.

Hm, that sounded a bit worrisome.

But Snow didn't think it was polite to prod. A vampire's feeding habits were intensely personal, whether they opted for blood banks, willing volunteers or... assault. Well, Snow didn't endorse assault, obviously, and thankfully, as far as she knew, every vampire who came to the Hauntley didn't do so...anymore. If not for moral reasons, then, as she had discovered through conversation, "it's just too messy."

And that was true. Vampire powers could cover their tracks, but mistakes happened, and many vampires didn't want to deal with the hassle of legal action...or a mob!

Anyway, Snow was going to let the comment lie.

"Well, I'm happy to provide the alternative! Give me just one moment, and I'll get you a glass."

Indeed, Snow was only gone for about five minutes before she returned with a goblet full of her warmed boneblood.

"Here you are! This was brewed two days ago," she said, very proud. "I just heated it a little on the stove."

"Danke Snow," Veronika said softly. This could be the solution she needed. Maybe she had simply been too stubborn to see a prime opportunity for a replacement to her bad behavior and cravings. It would be wonderful if the solution were that simple.

She reached for the goblet full of boneblood, taking a moment to sniff at it. It smelled enough like blood. Perhaps this was a great answer. "I see. It is very clever of you to have come up with this," Veronika remarked as she hesitated a moment longer before she finally lifted the goblet and took a careful sip of it.

The blood was warm like blood should be... but it only took a minute for it to hit her tongue and make her fight the instinct to gag. Her nose wrinkled as the taste truly hit her. It was comparable to drinking diet coke in an attempt to replace the original. The flavor was different and... well it didn't feel like it was even close to as good. She shivered and forced herself to take another sip of it.

The second sip was as unsatisfying as the first, and she finally opted to set the goblet down on a counter. "That is... definitely unique," Veronika finally managed to say. She could not put the words together to compliment such a concoction anymore.

Kim had heard about NTO from Nate or April. She couldn't quite remember but one of them had suggested there for decor for her dorm room. She would have been happy getting her own place but Pride U's rules were first years had to get a dorm room which is how she ended up in this store.

She noticed they had some fall decor in and maybe a few halloween bits and pieces but she figured they would have more coming in as it got closer to that season. She actually wasn't looking for that type of decor yet but she wanted to have a look as her mom's favourite season was fall and holiday was halloween.

Alas, she'd have to wait a few weeks.

Never mind.

She made her way through the store trying to find some nice vases for her room as she loved getting flowers and she wanted to find a nice jewellery/trinket box. That's when she found herself in an awkward situtation that the employee of this store had walked away from.

"Well to start I'm not sure what you're talking about but it does seem like they weren't much help to you." Kim smiled at her, "What were you looking for? Maybe I could help?"

The girl that Veronika had spoken to was right. The employee really wasn't much help to her at all. A shame really, because Veronika didn't think her request was that complicated. But perhaps this young woman could help her determine if that were truly the case or not.

She sighed, trying to scan the aisle she was in a bit more for any sign of what she was looking for. "Oh well if you are not too busy... that would be lovely." Admittedly Veronika technically had all the time in the world to track this down herself but... it was nicer to do these things with company. Less dreary.

"Well I wanted something summery and fun but also with a bit of a spookier energy to it. Sort of like that live action Scooby Doo with a mix of spooky elements and beach. Does this make sense?"

Vampire. Ah. So that it what this creature was. Daehínen almost felt foolish for not recognizing this sooner. He had never encountered such a novelty before in the flesh, only ever having read about them in the Archives or hearing older elves speak about them. His head cocked to the side a touch, eyes observing them with this in mind.

It was remarkable how the creature did not appear to be dead despite being a corpse.

"No. I cannot understand your particular problems," he agreed. Nor would he want to suffer from such a fate. It seemed terrible. "But you are obtuse to think that you are the only one who suffers from similar ailments. I know that it is a hard and grueling task to have control of one's impulses and mind. It takes time. I am no master, I have much to learn and practice. I do it for myself, as well as those around me.

"If what I know of your kind to be true, you have much time to dedicate toward this problem. Are you honest in your desire to find control over yourself?" he inquired. Daehínen looked down at the human again. "Or do you think that their short lives should continue to be sacrificed for yours that has no set end?"

Obtuse. That was a strange choice of phrasing. And not one that Veronika agreed with. Of course she knew she wasn't the only vampire who had difficulties... but no one in her family or immediate area had difficulties quite like her. Her appetite was...extreme. And certain tastes simply did not fill her or satisfy in the same way that a human might.

She tried hard to stick to animal blood and avoid people entirely but... clearly it didn't work. That was why she'd been in the forest to begin with. "Do you realize how long I have already been dedicating my time to try to solve this problem?" Veronika retorted bitterly. "If the issue was only time then of course I could spend another decade or two on just this. But that has hardly helped so far."

She didn't like his tone. Or the implication. "Of course not. I do not wish to sacrifice anyone. I have been trying to work at control for a very long time. You might not believe me based on this, but I have tried a great number of things to make it better."

Rob’s blood turned to ice when he recognized the vampire from Swynlake at this stupid little shop in NTO.

Why the hell was she here and how could he not interact with her?

He just needed to pick up some birthday candles for his mum, because fuck what the caregivers said he wasn’t going to not get her a cake. ‘Open flames are prohibited as they can be a risk to the patients.’ Well, he was actually a doctor so he considered his professional opinion above theirs. There just needed to be a small light in the dreary life of Katherine King, even if it was some shitty cheap candles.

All hope he had of avoiding the leech was dashed when she asked him a question. It’s like she could sniff out who didn’t want to talk to her.

“I’m sure it is. Whatever it is.” He raised his eyebrows in acknowledgment then tried to keep his head down and move through the aisle.

Especially just going with the idea being weird without a moment's thought. Had this freakishly tall man really considered it at all? Or had he simply wanted to be rude and move on?

Either way, Veronika wasn't going to let it go simply at that. "You do not even know really what I am working on. Rather ridiculous thing to say with a lack of knowledge, do you not agree?"

“No,” said Drizella. She shrugged. 

She, herself, was holding a large novelty garden gnome. She was buying it for Annie, mostly as a joke. She was pretty sure that Annie would hate the gnome and that it would then end up in her flat. She had a plan to put the gnome in front of her apartment, start a whole lawn decor renaissance in the floors of Castle Suites.

“Kooky and spooky,” she said. “Animated headstones sipping margaritas. Jack-o-lanterns carved like tiki heads. I understand.” She nodded solemnly, clutching the garden gnome that she decided she was going to name Phyllis.

How amazingly refreshing. Veronika was sure that she would get another weird look for her choices to look for something remotely spooky in July. Thankfully someone else could appreciate the concept.

"Yes! That is kind of what I was going for. I didn't think it would be quite so difficult to get around here," Veronika admitted with a frown. "If you happen to have seen anything like it though please let me know. I've been at a loss," she added. "I like your gnome," Veronika added. "It's quite charming."

"You asked what I like, I was just being honest. I'm not one for the Princess treatment." Already Boo's breath was starting to catch a little bit as the kisses trailed down her skin. There was still that faint swimming sensation in her head, but she ignored it. It only made everything feel more heightened and a little sexier. Cel was about to be fed well enough to counteract the blood loss, she was sure.

"That can be fixed."

With practiced ease, Boo opened the clasp of her bra and shucked it off, dropping it to the side. She flicked open the button of her jeans, but that was as much as she could manage where she was sitting. "I think you're wearing too many clothes as well."

The honesty was nice. And helpful. Veronika wasn't so much for the princess sort of treatment either. She didn't have the patience for that. And she liked it a little rougher too. As a vampire it was harder to have it be rough enough anyway.

Veronika's lips curled up in a pleased smile as Boo opened the clasp of her bra and chucked it aside. That was already a much better view for her than before. "You're absolutely right. Far too many," she agreed, leaning back to tug her shirt up and over her head. She then proceeded to undo her bra and toss it away as well before she leaned back in.

Her hands trailed down over Boo's newly exposed chest, one cupping one of her breasts, the other flicking her thumb over the nipple, delighting in the chance to touch such a beautiful woman and her chest. She could spend so much time just admiring her like this. "Beautiful... an absolute vision..."

Herc was wandering aimlessly through the aisles. He had come in with Ken, who was looking for a replacement for a lamp that Hercules had accidentally knocked off the end table, but was subsequently deep in a conversation with someone about the merits of different styles of frames for pictures.

So Herc had taken to meandering, until he found his way blocked by a fairly fervent sounding discussion.

"Uh-" He blinked, as the shop assistant dived past him and left him there staring at a very beautiful lady. "Sorry, what's a bad idea? Scooby Doo?" He said, more than a little confused. "Are we talking about that reboot they're planning?"

Veronika sighed.

She supposed this was the result of someone coming in mid conversation or moment. Of course what she said would make no sense. "No I wanted to... I need decorations for a summer sort of party with a bit of a spooky sort of air... ein bisschen... er... a little like the live action Scooby Doo sort of feel on that Island you know?"

Scooby Doo had been a positively baffling thing for her when she'd first watched it. Though Veronika had ended up enjoying it for the most part. "They're planning another reboot? Have they not already done that many times?" Veronika was losing track of it really.
