Nate raised his eyebrows at the whole neurosurgeon and rocket scientist thing. "Man, I thought having lawyers for parents was crazy, but no shit? That's insane." He let out a slight chuckle, "Bet things can get a little competitive then. My brother and I, well, he's kind of the more over-achiever-y of the two of us. Call it being the first born."

"A mystery is pretty cool. I like a good who-done-it. You know, Knives Out, Clue, etc. It makes you think, for sure." Nate said as he picked up his scone and took another bite out of it.

"You solve a lot of mysteries? I mean, not like big ones or murders or anything but, I bet you're like really observant. You give that vibe." He nodded with a small grin.

"Yeah, it can be pretty intense sometimes." Kim wasn't going to lie that sometimes she felt like she wasn't doing enough to live up to her parents' legacy. "I guess I can understand that being the oldest. I have younger twin brothers and they are very competitive."

"Oh, definitely. A who-dunnit is pretty good too. We could maybe watch one together some time and see if we can figure out who did it." She took a sip of her coffee before another bite of her scone. She was glad she had met Nate and he was a cool guy.

"I have solved quite a few. I even ended up travelling to Barcelona to help recover a painting for a billionaire." Kim hoped that didn't sound like she was bragging because she definitely wasn't. "Thank you. I tend to see what others don't. I definitely get vibes about people. One of my friends back home used to have the worst taste in guys and every time I met them I had this feeling in my gut that they weren't to be trusted and I was right every time."

It wasn't Pixie's bar, with its warm oak.

This was Pierrot, its countertop shiny onyx and new. It was cold against his elbows where he had rested them.

Each time he came in here, it was like picking at a scab. His gaze searched for something, anything familiar, that would remind him of Tink--and all the others too. The way they'd laugh, the kind of laugh of a group of people who had a secret only the others knew.

Gem had never fit in like that with anyone.

He took a sip of his drink: whiskey, neat.

Someone started to sit down on the stool next to him. "That seat is taken."

Kim had been here a few times since she moved to Swynlake.

She was still trying to make friends which is why she signed up for the musical but the one thing she hadn't expected was the Prom Queen nomination.

Now that was a mystery.

One she was going to solve but for now she was going to enjoy her night. She was waiting on a date, some guy from NTO but she hadn't seen him yet so she headed to the bar to see if he was there.

Kim didn't notice anyone else as she took a seat at the bar until a voice spoke out. "Oh, sorry. I didn't realise."

She was only going to be here a few minutes until her date arrived. "I'm waiting for someone so I'll only be here for a few minutes. Can I get you another?"

Maybe offering to buy him a drink would help convince him to let her sit there for a few minutes but if not then it was a free country and she could sit where she wanted.

"I have heard that about the Brits," Kim laughed. "Sounds like you love your coffee just as much as me. I have had a nice Italian espresso when I was in Rome in September." She had spend a week there helping to look for a priceless artifact for a Nigerian Prince who paid for all her expenses after she managed to find the artifact under 24 hours.

"Ah, I get you." She kind of did but she also wanted to Google it to see how to eat a scone because it was going to bug her if she didn't know how. It didn't really matter in the grand schemes of things but if she could She didn't think Nate would mind if she was on her phone for a few seconds so she did a quick Google and found that some people had butter and jam with it or clotted cream and jam. Hmm... both options sounded appealing. "I'm just going to go grab some butter and jam. Sounds like that would be nice on a scone."

Kim quickly went to grab what she needed before coming back, "Sorted." She sat back down and started spreading butter and jam on her scone then laughed at Nate's antics. "No problems here. Let your weird flag fly." She took a bite of her scone and decided this was one of her new favourite treats.

"Yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment." Kim liked to be challenged and this would probably be one of her biggest - taking on two degrees at once but if she didn't think she could do it then she wouldn't. "Criminology and Law then Political Science. I've always had an interest in solving mysteries and..."

She was thinking of mentioning her crime fighting adventures in high school but she didn't know Nate all that well and she didn't want to weird him out, not that she thought what she did was weird but not everyone saw it as normal. "Never mind, lost my train of thought."

"A lady of action." Nate said immediately after swallowing down the chunk of scone he'd just taken a bit out of. Probably was a pretty driven person. Took initiative.

"Criminology and Law and Poli Sci, woof." He said with a deep exhale, "Couldn't be me."

He raised a brow with a grin, his tone teasing, "You one of those podcast girlies then? Listen to true crime to wind down after a long day? Watch some crazy documentary on a cult for fun?" He bit into his scone again, chewing it as he sized her up a little bit.

"Pretty much." Kim decided not to tell Nate about her teenage crime fighting days. It might come up again one day and maybe she would know him better by then.

"I am an overachiever. It runs in the family." Kim laughed before taking another bite then adding, "Try having a neurosurgeon for a mom and rocket scientist for a dad." Kim blushed slightly when she noticed his teasing tone, she couldn't help herself especially when the guy doing the teasing was good looking.

"Maybe but I spend a lot of time with my gran watching old reruns of Law and Order when I went to her house every summer." Kim did listen to true crime podcasts and she had been a guest star on a couple that weren't that popular so knew that no one would recognise her from them.

"I do like a good true crime podcast. I like figuring out the mystery and getting to the bottom of what happened and why the killer is who it is. It's very interesting and gets me thinking about the kind of mysteries I could solve."

Kim didn't have much experience with dogs as both her parents worked long hours when she was growing up and there was no time for a dog in an environment like that. Plus growing up with her twin brothers was like having a dog as they didn't know how to stay out of trouble.

Well, really she knew the owner's business partner, quiet intimately, but that seemed too complicated to get into, so "business owner" would suffice. Besides, she did know Jack!

"There are also house parties. Especially once you get to uni. I know all the best ones. I'd be happy to take you! Here, we should exchange numbers," April said excitedly at the idea of another girl to have fun with. (Though, their ideas of fun might differ drastically, that hadn't exactly occurred to April.)

"Oh, really?" Kim knew moving to a small town would have its cons but she was intrigued by the magical/natural disaster mention. "Is there anything else mysterious that goes on in town? I'm interested in things like that, a puzzle to solve, that kind of thing."

"Ooh, a club. Now, that I can get behind." Kim had been to a few underage clubs in the next town over to Middleton but this time she could drink if she wanted as the legal age was different over here in the UK. "Ooh, you'll have the insider scoop knowing the owner and everything."

Kim was looking forward to uni and everything that came with that but there was time for that. "Yes, that would be great." She took out her phone to take the number when she realised she didn't even know the blonde's name. "Oh, I just realised I did get your name and we've been chatting for ages." She let out a brief awkward laugh before adding, "I'm Kim Possible."

"Is it okay if I pet him?" The dog seemed friendly enough and probably liked to be petted but he wasn't Kim's dog and it felt right to ask permission first.

"That's such a cute name and it definitely suits him." Kim didn't mind the dog climbing about her. He obviously felt comfortable enough to do so and he wasn't doing any harm. Her jeans could be washed and she'd been in bigger messes than a dog jumping on her jeans.

"Do you live here?" Kim hadn't seen the girl around before but again she'd only been here a few days so could have missed her.

"It's just if you do, I'm looking for fun things to do in this town and figured someone who lived here would know." Well, that would be obvious and this girl looked the type who knew how to have fun.

She was super excited to be done with first year so that she and her sisters could get a flat or something (or a suite in the Tipton was probably more realistic...)

Nate listed off a few different places and styles of coffee he'd had. He liked to experience new things, that was really the upside of being carted around on family trips and whatever and not actually doing much vacationing with his parents.

"I think scones handle a lot like biscuits. The American biscuits, not British which you know, is confusing because that is a cookie." He chuckled, "I think there are a lot of ways to eat a scone. I think the only time someone gave me a look was when I cut it in half, stuffed it full of jam and then ate it like a sandwich." He looked up thinking about it before he looked back to Kim. "But yeah, I've seen people cut them in half and spread things on it like a piece of toast. Or like spread some, take a bite and then spread some more."

Nate ceremoniously held the scone up and ripped it in half like it was baguette and took a bite out of the corner of it, with a grin, "Listen, if someone's going to be the weird one at the table, it's gonna be me. You got no problems with that."

"Whoa, two degrees at the same time?" His eyebrows rose, because wow. "That's wild. What in? If you're in the sciences building at all you might run into me with the geologists."

Now that he'd made himself known with Kovu and settled temporarily it was time to get to work. The sooner he cased the whole town the better. Then he could try to get things done for mother.

He pulled his car up in front of the town hall. Might as well get information from the center of it all. He parked his car and locked it, stepping away to study the place before he went inside. There were a ton of different pamphlets. But the one that stood out to him was one on a lesson that explained the town's mysterious phenomena.

He raised an eyebrow at he read some of the contents of the pamphlet itself before he twisted around, spotting a stranger passing by. "Hey. You know about this class or group or something? It actually useful or just some nonsense to fearmonger?"

She had come to learn some residents weren't so happy with the magical aspects of town or even the Magick residents.

Kim had been in town a couple of months by now and she had been getting to know the in and outs of Swynlake.

She passed some guy looking at the town hall notice board but didn't think anything of it until he stopped her. "Oh, I'm not sure." She took a quick look at the pamphlet before looking at him, "From the quick look I just had, I'd hazard a guess at it being nonsense to fear monger but that's just my opinion."

"Best to keep busy and moving to beat any sort of jet leg," May said with a nod of approval. "It's just at the end of Main here."

She fell into step beside the other as they began walking in the right direction.

"A bit of both, I'd say! I was born here and actually grew up in the Tipton, my family owns it," she explained. "But we moved before my sisters and I graduated secondary. Been in quite a few places since then and only just moved back at the start of the fall semester last year to go to uni. It's been so surreal being back."

May smiled, "And what about you? What brings you to our little town all the way from...?"

"Yeah, normally I'd think about napping but I also know I'd be too restless in a new town and want to see what's out there." Kim looked ahead of them seeing what looked like a hotel.

"Ah, okay." That was pretty cool. "Nice! Where have you travelled?" It was nice to meet someone who had travelled around a bit too and it would be cool to exchange stories with Kim maybe leaving out the crime fighting details. Not everyone thought that was cool.

"I'm in the middle of a gap year and I'm going to Pride University in the fall so decided to come early and see what Swynlake is like." Kim realised she hadn't told the girl her name of where she was from. "I'm from Middleton and the name's Kim."

Nate held his cup in his hands as he sat back a bit, "Hey, I mean, you gotta get through your big move any way you can. No shame in a little caffeine." After all, there were a million other much worse things you could be doing for lifelines.

"Hope it lives up to your Middleton expectations." He teased with a grin. Coffee here was definitely different than back home but you know, he'd gotten pretty used to it. Not entirely used to the whole milk in your tea thing, but he was acclimating to the culture. At least they had good cookies (biscuits as he would call them in his best terrible posh accent impression) over here for their beverages.

He took a sip of his coffee, "But yeah, this place is pretty good for studying too if you can claim a table. Otherwise you've got spots like the library or [name redacted], if you can find it," he was really bad at finding it, "or even Chippamunka's across the street from campus."

Yes, some may be shocked to hear of him actually 'studying' but you know, it wasn't so hard if you picked something you actually thought was cool.

"Yeah, I had planned for the long flight but again experiencing it is a lot different." Kim did know how long the flight was going to be and maybe she should have gone straight to the hotel instead of sitting here with Nate but she was letting herself enjoy the moment instead of worrying about her lack of sleep.

Kim took another sip of her coffee, "It's not bad even though the coffee back home is slightly better in my opinion but considering I'll be here for at least three years, I'll get used to it." She cut her scone in half, not sure what to do next, this was definitely a British food.

"I hope this doesn't sound silly but can I eat my scone like this?" She awkwardly laughed before adding, "I've never had one before."

It could be an embarrassing moment for some but she wasn't embarrassed and hoped Nate didn't think it was embarrassing.

Kim nodded along as he spoke of studying places, "Good to know. I'm always looking for a good place to study considering I'm planning on doing two degrees at one time." That wasn't a brag and she hoped he didn't think that. She just couldn't decided on one degree so went for two subjects she was interested in.

"Oh, no, that's--" Frank was embarrassed enough, he didn't really feel the need to prolong it. "That's okay, I can manage, I think--"

He picked up one of the boxes just for the bottom, which had been soaking in a puddle for the last thirty seconds, to collapse. Loose paper fluttered to the wet, dirty floor.

"Um-- actually, yeah. Help would be great. Thank you. Sorry."

Kim was happy to help but if he didn't want it then she would just go into the library and get on with what she was planning on doing.

That was until she saw him attempt to pick up one of the boxes and it just collapsed in his hands.

There was no way he would be able to salvage any of this without some help. Luckily she was here then and now he was asking for it so she was happy to oblige.

"Of course." Kim looked at the damaged boxes on the ground and the boxes undamaged. She was trying to figure out what was best to do first; get the undamaged ones inside or sort the mess of the damaged ones. "Should we clear this up first then get the undamaged boxes inside? I'm happy to do what you think is best"

Jack had expected the lass to just fuck off-- too impatient to deal with his childish ways. Jack would not blame her. Wasn't that the whole point, huh?

"...Alright, you convinced me," said Jack. He flashed a smile. "I guess I can help you. Where'd you say you were going? I'll be your personal chaperone." He held out his arm, not expecting her to take it, but it was funny to him.

"I thought you would see it my way." Kim was stubborn and usually people saw it her way eventually. Luckily this guy had come around quicker than most and it meant she would be on her way to her hotel room sooner rather than later.

"I'm looking for the Tipton Hotel. The taxi driver couldn't seem to find it and dropped me off here." Hopefully he would know where that was. "Then I'm looking for a decent place for a coffee."

Kim decided to not take his arm for now but she did have a little laugh to herself about it. "So where to, sir?"

"I'm not your sweetheart." Kim knew guys like him and as charming as he probably was, it just made her want to roll her eyes because their charm was usually all they had and nothing else.

"I don't know. Someone that probably got off on the right side of the bed." Kim didn't really want to stand around discussing who came up with an old saying, that old that probably no one knew who came up with it.

Kim waved the vapour from her face, she guessed he was doing it to bother her but she wasn't going to let him think it did. It didn't bother her, she just didn't want the vapour in her face and that was perfectly reasonable. She was trying not to ask him to stop doing that but she just couldn't resist, "Do you have to do that?"

"Anyway, if you're done with that, are you going to help or not?" Kim was a patient person but she'd already wasted time with this jerk that she was ready for a coffee and to drop off her luggage so if he wasn't going to be helpful then she'd find someone who would.

Kim had been here a few days now and it wasn't too bad living out a hotel. She might feel differently in a month or two but for now it was fine and she knew it wasn't a permanent solution.

Maybe she could look to see if there were any apartments available near by and rent one of them.

That was something to think about for another day.

She was crossing the lobby on her way out when she was stopped by a dog in her tracks who was sniffing around her. So she leaned down and put her hand out for the dog to sniff but was stopped in her tracks by a voice coming towards them.

"Is this your dog?" Kim stood up to speak to the blonde. "He is very cute. Is it a he or a she?"

Porty had very little manners. Or discipline. The three Cavaliers owned the Tipton just as much as their little mistresses. April, in kind, did not even bother to tell him to get down. He was small! She didn't think it was a bother at all. Besides, he was the cutest dog to ever exist, so the girl should be so lucky.

Why the delivery couldn't bring the stuff into the building Frank had no idea, but nevermind. The book trolley could be dual purpose if he needed it to be, and he definitely did need it to be - there was no way he was carrying twenty cases of printer paper up into the library by one by one.

He was was stood at the back of the van, unloading eaching case one by one, when he turned and realised someone was behind him. The shock of it made him disappear for a brief second, pulse spiking until he realised that there actually was no threat at all. He had dropped the stack of paper into a puddle, though. Sighing and opaque again, Frank said, "Sorry-- I, um, I didn't see you there. Let me just get that--"

Kim had just come from the Department of Humanities after speaking to some of lecturers who may be teaching her in the fall. She had went to speak to them in the hopes of getting a chance to sit in on classes or even get a glimpse at the coursework she may be undertaking but sadly they couldn't give her what she wanted.

It wasn't all bad news as they did give her some material to look at from this year's classes and gave her a list of coursebooks to either buy or find in the library. Technically she wasn't a student yet but she was assured that the library was for public use too.

That's where Kim was headed when she realised she was at the back of the library and not the front after noticing the delivery van. She could turn around and go in the front but that seemed more hassle than it was worth and she was already here.

She tried to get past the delivery van and delivery with minimal disturbance but it wasn't in the cards. "Oh no. It's my fault." She hadn't even noticed that he had disappeared, more focused on the stack of paper in the puddle. "Do you need any help?"

Caffeine Fueled and Ready to Go || Open

"Macchiato and a scone, gotcha. Grab a seat and I'll be right back." Nate grinned at her and motioned to the tables near the windows. Pretty good first impression if he did say so himself. Pat himself on the back for this one.

Kim seemed like a cool babe. Just off initial vibes, she seemed to find him charming, he assumed. Who wouldn't? (Plenty of people, but that didn't stop him from just doing him).

He grabbed her Carmel macchiato and scone and a drip coffee for himself and you know, maybe he earned himself a scone too. The hockey player turned from the pick up area and made eye contact with the hottie before sliding around the line and bringing their goods back.

"Coffee and snackage is served." He said with a wink, placing her scone and caramel macchiato in front of her before taking a seat across from her.

"No problem." Kim grabbed a table by the windows, placing her suitcase down by her seat and taking a quick glance out the windows. It was surprising a nice view and she could get used to it.

Nate seemed like a cool guy, maybe too charming but as far as first impressions went, well he'd made a good one on her and that was hard to do.

Time would tell though.

Definitely charming.

Again she was running on about ten coffees and no sleep so she could be seeing it through sleep deprived eyes. But the fact he made an effort to give her eye contact whilst waiting on their coffees said a lot to her and she smiled at him.

She also appreciated the wink when he brought the goods over especially as he had coffee with him which may be one of her weaknesses. "Thank you." She took a sip of her coffee, embracing the warmth of it and the good taste of coffee. "You're a lifesaver. I probably shouldn't have this considering I'm running on no sleep but caffeine is my lifeline."

Some people couldn't live without their phone but Kim couldn't live without caffeine.
