There. Finally. A civil conversation. Mulder's offer to help piques Azazel's interest, even if he isn't sure how helpful it would really be.
"... it isn't usually. We try to keep track of each other." Azazel looks over the photos once more, frowning. "But Mephisto has always been... insistent on his independence. It's normal for us to not hear from him for a few months or a year..."
Trailing off, Azazel seems to dwell on something, before looking up at Mulder. "... Agent, I'm sure you're listening to this with a certain amount of bias. I need you to understand something. Mephisto hasn't been gone for this long since his deal with Faustus. And he came back from that... changed. I'm trying not to panic. Archimedes is doing enough of that. He shelters Mephisto to a fault, and Mephisto can be very delicate as a result. I'm not panicked, but I am concerned."
Now hold on just one fucking second.
"... You're kidding." Mulder said, incredulous, "Faustus? Like Faust? THE Faust and Mephistopheles? You're kidding me right now."
This had to be a joke. This had to be some elaborate, cosmic joke that was laughing right in his very face. The agent shook his head, rubbing his hand over his mouth as he leaned back against the wall.
".. Unbelievable."
And back they went. Azazel had overestimated his ability to keep up.
"What part of that sounds like a joke to you?? Listen, yes - there are notably recognized names in our family history." He would probably do best to avoid mentioning his husband. "But you mortals tend to... skew things. You hear bits and pieces of our lives, create your own narratives, misinterpret the details. I'm trying to tell you that Mephisto..."
Ugh. Here's the hard part. Trying to be a good, nice brother while making certain things clear. "... Mephisto doesn't always quite live up to the legends," he finally settles upon. "He's impatient, he's inexperienced, and he's used to other fixing his messes for him. Meaning he doesn't always know how to get out of them on his own."
Azazel picks up the pictures, turning them back to Mulder. "... how recent are these? Any of these cases stand out?"
Source
A reasonable enough request at this point.
Azazel took a deep breath, sitting back down. As he did so, the air seemed to shift around him. The most immediately obvious change were the horns. Ridged, goat-like, curving back over his head, hair curled neatly around the base. The second was the wings, black, leathery, his rigid posture making more sense as he allowed space for them as he sat. Perhaps less obvious from this perspective was the tail, of similar appearance to the wings, a lashing whip of a thing that gave a few agitated flicks. He had noticed the reach for the gun, and resisted a scoff, instead doing a flourish of the hand, presenting himself from foot to head, before gesturing at Mulder in invitation.
"Well? Is that enough of a clue for you, then? Or do I need to nearly set the office on fire as well?"
Well that threat was absolutely his worst nightmare. Not only for the sake of the X-Files, but his pyrophobia would leave him utterly incapacitated. Who would come running for Fox Mulder going up in flames if Scully was away? Yeah, he didn't want to think about that one too hard.
"I would prefer that you didn't." He said, keeping a somewhat defensive posture, "So, what, you're a family of demons trying to find their kin: how hard could that be?" No, really. He didn't know much about the inner workings of the infernal but he figured they must at least be able to recognize each other.
"Let's establish the facts, and maybe we'll see if I can offer any help to your missing brother problem."

"And just what do you think your continued threats will do, Agent?"
Azazel's hackles raise defensively, leering in, baring his teeth. Sharp teeth, glamours beginning to slip, flecks of yellow and slitted pupils in emerald eyes as he glares the agent down. He mulls over his options, their bizarre game of trying to figure out what the other knows tiring him.
"Are you aware of what sort of game you're playing? Do you know what we are?? We are feigning ourselves onto your level, not because we fear you, but merely because of a need for temporary truce." There's a growl low in his throat as he jabs at the pictures with Mephisto's name, claws stabbing a hole through the photograph and into the desk "Our brother is MISSING, Agent. And it is easier to stay upon this plane looking for him if we play by your rules."
Okay now that... was not what he was expecting.
The agent actually takes a few steps back, hand instinctively reaching for his gun. He isn't sure what the fuck a bullet was supposed to do against a being of pure evil but hey at least he would have put up a fight.
"... I see." Yeah, no shit. "... Well why don't you clue me in and we can stop playing Guess Who?" He's glad Scully wasn't here. She probably would have passed out from shock.
A reasonable enough request at this point.

By all means of comparison, Azazel was the most put together of his brothers. He had to be. One brother disgraced, the other a mess, he had learned to talk their family out of a lot of messes.
This, however, might have been where he met his match.
He visibly froze. His eyes were the only things moving, looking everything over. He had vaguely known that his brother had some infamy back in the day, but this was. Very different.
"... God fucking damn it, Memphis," he hissed, starting to rifle through the photos. He didn't really have much other immediate response to this, debating childish outcries of baseless conjecture, of the agent grasping at straws. He took a few deep breaths, palms stilling, resting flat over the photos.
"... explain to me what you think this is meant to prove, Agent Mulder." It was the best he could muster before he shot out and filled too many blanks for the man - though the resignation of a man cornered was beginning to overtake him.
"Don't. Play. Dumb. With. Me." Mulder pressed his finger onto one of the photos with each word, "Your reaction just now is proof that you know very well what this is meant to prove. Conjuring fire? Disappearing in a blink of an eye? Old symbols and sigils. Bodies with names branded into them, give me a break!"
Now he was taking a leap. He could still fall back into simply occult behavior to maintain his sense of credibility, but for now he remained metaphorically in the air.
"You need to start talking right now, or I'll place you under arrest." He knew this was a loose threat, but if he was resisting to divulge more information about his brothers he would be seen as an accomplice. The bribe was another matter but he wasn't too sure how hard that would stick.
"Because we try to keep private, Agent." Azazel sits back up, pushing his hair back and fixing it slightly. "The fact you've had to run into us was a matter of desperation. Archimedes is..." Azazel purses his lips for a second. "... Archimedes is a good man, but he doesn't think very clearly when Mephisto is involved. So he might have told you some things that he shouldn't have. About what we're capable of."
Leaning forward onto the desk, Azazel folds his arms onto its surface. "... I apologize for mistaking you for a man that could be bought, Agent. It's worked on people of much higher station than you. And it's a common language with the kinds of people I usually deal with. But certainly, we can talk instead. You seem to have a lot of questions and theories about what it is you have managed to see. I can try to clear as much up as possible."
That was better. It wasn't great, but it was better.
Mulder leaned back as Azazel drew closer, keeping his distance and keeping the other at a metaphorical and literal arm's length. He ran his tongue along the front of his teeth underneath his lip as he prepared to broach the subject.
"Sure, I got questions." He said, standing up from his chair and walking to one of his file cabinets. Rather quickly he retrieved a file, setting it down on top of the desk and opening it up to sift through the documents. Photos were splayed out before Azazel, bodies marked with a name. MEPHISTO.
"You got answers?" He hadn't made the connection until the very same name passed through the other man's lips, but he had a hunch about the link beforehand. Sure, this could simply be the work of someone who was the demon's superfan, but it was all a little coincidental. From his knowledge, that name wasn't all too popular these days.

"... explain to me what you think this is meant to prove, Agent Mulder." It was the best he could muster before he shot out and filled too many blanks for the man - though the resignation of a man cornered was beginning to overtake him.
And that would be a strike two.
Azazel's pride was beginning to take a blow. He wasn't topside quite as often as Mephisto, but he'd considered himself to have at least slightly more intuition in handling these things than Archimedes. He should have listened to Sthenos. He paused again, giving a rumbling growl to ease the tension, then bowing his head, pinching his temples. He took a bit to decide on the best response
"... what do you think is happening, Agent?" He opens, hand coming up to slide the money back towards himself. "You've spoken to Archimedes. Apparently you believe to have seen something strange. Help me help you help us. I try to be a practical man."
"I know a cover-up when I see one." He sneered, leaning forward a little, "Don't play dumb with me. If this was a simple matter of fireworks and stage magic, you wouldn't be sitting across from me, would you?" The agent tilted his head, giving a quick glance up and down before opening his mouth again.
"Your family has done a great job of keeping itself hidden. Made my job very, very hard. Why don't you help me? That might make me a little more compliant instead of trying to buy me off like some street-walker." Even if he did have a hunch, he wasn't just going to tip his hand. He had a hard enough time at the Bureau not getting laughed at every time he opened his mouth, and wasn't going to suffer the same thing with this man.
MUSE SHAMING
send me a ⚠️ with a reason my muse should be shamed (e.g. “hangs toilet paper backward”) and I can only confirm or deny
This was exactly why he hated dealing with mortals. Unpredictable. Some of them took well to the firm approach. The others acted like this.
Azazel pauses, watching Mulder. Then with a heavy sigh, he starts to rifle through the inner pocket of his coat.
"... listen, Agent Mulder. It seems I've started on the wrong foot. You can call me Azazel. Archimedes is not a dangerous man. There has been a very blatant misunderstanding." He pulls out a wallet, looking through the contents. He'd taken special care to research the current currency, taking out several immensely crisp hundred dollar bills and placing them on the desk. "He's... a little out of touch. But he means well." He puts away the wallet, leaning back into his chair. "As do I. I just want to clear this current misconception that's been placed in his name. Our family has some current business were trying to look into on this particular side of town, and misunderstandings like this make it very hard to to get to what needs to be done. Do you understand?"
Oh fuck this guy.
Mulder doesn't even look at the money. He keeps his gaze locked on Azazel, narrowing more and more by the second. The agent can feel his jaw begin to lock. Mulder will not be bought. Mulder will not be silenced.
"You need to tell me right now what's really going on, or I will add bribery to your apparent laundry list of crimes." Listen, Mulder wasn't above skirting around the law himself when it was convenient, but this? This was insulting. Attempting to buy a Federal Agent? Just who did this piece of shit think he was?
"Your family seems to have a myriad of secrets, and with the way your brother was able to produce fire seemingly from nowhere and then disappear without a trace, it seems to me this would be very, very important for the Bureau to keep an eye on."
And that would be a strike two.
Azazel's pride was beginning to take a blow. He wasn't topside quite as often as Mephisto, but he'd considered himself to have at least slightly more intuition in handling these things than Archimedes. He should have listened to Sthenos. He'd be a delight to deal with, then. Azazel sighed, settling into the chair, sitting up and crossing his legs.
"I'm here to settle some things. You recently dealt with a man named Archimedes, who was brought into custody at a nearby station, and spoke with you and your partner." His head tilts up slightly, lips pressed in a thin line. "... Archimedes is my brother. From what I understand he was semi-shaken by what happened, and nay have caused a little bit of of a scene. Thats why I'd like to clear up some misunderstandings. Something I'd have taken up through different lines normally. But I was told you're the one in possession of some family heirlooms that are imperative for me to recover."
Azazel had a confidence missing in the other, even with his more petite frame and even younger appearance. He kept staunch eye contact with the agent as he spoke.
Oh, Mulder knew exactly what this was. This was a cover-up.
He hated cover-ups.
“You understand that your brother is a fugitive. If you know where he is, and you refuse to return him to police custody, you’re immediately recognized as an accomplice.” There was no way this scrawny little shit was going to come into his office, his basement, his department, and try to shove his weight around. Mulder didn’t care who this guy was or what sort of money he had. This man wanted the seal in his file cabinet, and until he was going to divulge the reason why Mulder was going to make this a personal vendetta.
This was exactly why he hated dealing with mortals. Unpredictable. Some of them took well to the firm approach. The others acted like this.
Azazel pauses, watching Mulder. Then with a heavy sigh, he starts to rifle through the inner pocket of his coat.

"... Agent Mulder?"
His mild annoyance at the informality slips away quickly into acceptance as he approached the desk. He had a voice that was naturally soft, clearly trained into a sharpened edge. Sharp emerald eyes gave the man in front of him a once over. He certainly fit the description Archimedes had given him - though looking muchless friendly then hed been led to expect. He remained standing as he looked around the office, taking everything in. "Don't suppose you might have a moment to speak?"
"I got all the time in the world." The sarcasm was dripping.
Mulder looked up, expecting some agent with a shit job to shove down his throat but instead was surprised to find someone who reeked of old money. Those types were always a riot to deal with.
"FBI's most unwanted, what can I do you for?"
He'd be a delight to deal with, then. Azazel sighed, settling into the chair, sitting up and crossing his legs.

Cleaning up Mephisto's messes was something Azazel had learned to bitterly accept. Cleaning up Archimedes'? Very new. Upsetting. Confusing. Exhausting.
He was certain to look his best. A smart suit - flattering, well-fitted. Hair appropriately tousled, shoes polished. He knocked firmly on the agents doors, adjusting his tie as he waited to be let in. This shouldn't take long at all. Grab the heirlooms, pay off any suspicions, and he'd be back home to console Archimedes. And they could get back to finding out what the hell had happened to their little brother.
"Door's open!" Shouted the FBI agent.
Since the escape at the prison, Mulder and Scully had sort of been on thin ice with A.D. Skinner. They had already had enough trouble keeping the X-Files in operation, and this certainly didn't help their case. Scully found herself once again having her time split between Quantico, sort of as a penance for the slip up. In the meantime, Mulder had kept himself preoccupied with looking up these so called Desmanti.
What he could find wasn't much. His usual channels and even some more distant parts of the internet barely turned up anything that seemed relevant. The seal that had been left behind continued to remain a mystery, and the best he could guess was this was some sort of very, very old family that usually kept to the shadows but for some reason decided to blunder into the spotlight.
When Azazel entered, before him sat a rather disgruntled looking Mulder, going over what limited information he had.
