El was silent for a moment. English was much easier for her now than it had been but words still sometimes escaped her. This was one of those times. She wished more people had mind powers like her and Kali. El rarely had trouble communicating with her big sister because they just understood each other. “Because you’re not together now,” she said slowly. To her, love was always. She and Mike would always love each other. Wouldn’t they? Love only died when the person died. “Why not together now?” That wasn’t right. She knew it wasn’t. But she wasn’t entirely sure how to correct it when she was struggling with this idea that being in love didn’t mean being in love forever.

ah, why weren’t they together now if they had been in love? that was certainly a fair question for someone learning about relationships. the older woman pauses to consider her answer for a moment, not wanting to confuse el or say something that would cause problems for jim.

“ love comes in a lot of different forms, ” diane explains gently, “ and sometimes it changes between them over time. ” she takes a sip of strong coffee. “ you love your friends in a different way than you love a ... husband. ” does el know what a boyfriend is? unsure, diane sticks with talking about a husband since el at least knows something about marriage. “ jim and i are ... just friends now. ” she just manages to keep her tone level, but internally she’s cringing at her own words.

just friends. that was over-exaggerating their current closeness by a lot. diane and jim were certainly far from friends and yet their history prevented them from ever really being ‘just acquaintances’ again either. the truth was somewhere between those two and a hell of a lot closer to the acquaintance side. hopefully, she hadn’t just stepped in it with jim by phrasing things that way but it seemed like the best way to explain things to el. of course, diane still loves her ex-husband but time and loss have changed everything.

" were we... in love? ” diane repeats the question back to the young girl she only met recently before looking in the direction jim has just gone. that was a heavy question, and an unexpected one. she’d better tread lightly here. hell, she doesn’t even know what jim has told el in the first place. “ yes. ” the woman answers truthfully. diane always feels its best to be as honest to children as possible, within reason. “ a long, long time ago. ” holding the warm mug in her hands a little tighter, she smiles softly as she explains, “ it’s why we got married. why do you ask? ”
