Steve turned off the water and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around his waist before heading out to the bedroom.
"Sorry, Sweetheart, I didn't catch that." He said, when he'd gotten in the shower Peggy had been asleep.
"Did I wake you?"
Steve didn't stop her from pulling away, though it did break his heart. When he'd first come home Steve had held Peggy and comforted her through her nightmares and her struggle to believe that he was here for good faded with time.
But things were different now.
Standing, Steve went to make her some tea, if nothing else he could offer her that.
While the water boiled, he turned back to Peggy.
"What does your gut tell you to do?"
"It tells me to trust you," she said honestly. "It always wants me to trust you because I love you. And that's why I'm worried about listening to it. Because loving you clouds my judgment."
Steve nodded, it made sense, if he was in her shoes he'd probably have the same reservations.
"When Howard gets here I'll have you two chat, maybe he and a few of our friends can vouch for me." It was sort of ridiculous that Steve needed other people to convince his wife that he could be trusted, but after everything they'd been through with the war and with each other, he couldn't really blame her.
"For now, let's try to be as normal as possible. Your tea should be ready in a minute."
"Friends?" she repeated. "I know I spend plenty of time with Howard and Mr. Jarvis." She smiled briefly. "It's nice to have another person from the home country to talk to. Someone who understands. But what other friends?"
Right, she wouldn't remember the friends they had made, or the old friends from the war who made it home.
"Well, for starters, Mrs. Ana Jarvis, she adores you. Angie when she's not busy touring... Dum Dum and a few of the other howling Commandos keep in touch. Those friends, Peg."
"Well given the way Edward speaks of her, I'm sure Ana is lovely," Peggy smiled. "I'm so glad to know we kept in touch with Angie. I liked living with her quite a bit. Even if I did have to lie to her a bit too often for my taste." The last name made her tear up. "They're still alive? They all made it out with us?"
