Caleb, your sentinel, lets you get away with just about anything. Slacking off, using his office for naps, demanding he skip training to go get food with you. You've become the spoiled pet of the guild, but no one would dare speak up about your relationship when you're the most compatible pairing in their recorded history, nevermind that you're both basically poison to anyone else. You're the only one with a high enough output to guide him, he's the only sentinel you can stand to guide. A perfect symbiosis.
Which is why you expect him to be understanding when you lend your abilities to another sentinel in need. Caleb has always sheilded you from having to guide anyone else. But he's not here, and it's an emergency, no other guides available with the skill set needed. So you roll up your sleeves, grit your teeth, and step into the Guiding Room.
The work is quick, all things considered. twenty minutes of ambient guiding. When you're done you expect a pat on the head and a word of praise for overcoming you fear of sentinels. So when he catches you on the way back to your room and pulls you into an empty Guiding Room, you're a bit aghast that he looks very nearly murderous.
He's standing too close, hasn't let go of you since he slammed the door behind you. You're used to skinship with him, but something about the way his thigh is slotted between yours strike you as shockingly unplatonic.
"I was helping?" The way he's acting, you're not even sure anymore. What did you do wrong?
His gaze slants. "By guiding some other bastard?"
He's never treated you this way. You've always known Caleb to be mild-tempered, more goofy than the live-wire the guild seems to think of him as.
You blink up at him, confused, upset that you've upset him. So what if you made a mistake — aren't you supposed to be his spoiled guide? Isn't he supposed to forgive you for anything and everything?
He holds out for another second before pulling you into his arms with a sigh. His big hand is warm at the base of your skull, like he's scruffing you. "You don't need to help anyone but me," he says. "Okay?"
You nod, not even sure what you're agreeing to. At least your soft-hearted Caleb is back.
He leans down, lips against your pulse point. "I guess you don't know just how possessive sentinels can be about their guides."
