just found out one of my best friends irl is a system ! she's known for over half a decade but she only just found the means to let me know. you know how prevalence of this type of existence is estimated to be roughly as common as redheads, if not more? IT'S TRUE. you could be interacting with systems every day!!!! I know it gets so lonely but there are so many people going about their lives as part of a system. plurality is a normal variation of the human experience and it's all around you. we're all gonna be okay I think
One time I invited someone my old discord server from another discord where they were using PK, and I thought, "oh I should add that bot here too so they can use it!" A few days later a few of my friends came out to me as plural because they saw this and since then I have met soooo many systems lol. Like a light switch they realized I was cool about it and all the sudden I was privy to a massive group I had like, no experience with.
I'm so good at asking only the most sensitive and not at all invasive or offensive questions /j (I'm told this is true but I still feel like it isn't lmao)
this is how it is!!!! a lot of people think systems are almost impossibly rare with "I've never met a system in my life" as a reason but trust me, YOU HAVE. we just aren't giving out that info willy nilly, because we don't know who will be safe to tell. it's incredibly stigmatised!
non-systems, you can make the world a more wonderful place, a safer place for your friends and peers, JUST by having an open mind and making it known that you're someone people like me can trust. really all it takes [:
Hello, I have no idea what being a system means but if someone can explain it to me in simple terms so I (and others who don't know what being a system means) can understand this post better.
hi! thank you for asking so politely [: it's complicated, but I'll try my best!
a system, in this context, is related to the clinical terms DID and OSDD. (it's a bit more complicated than just that, but I'm simplifying here!)
most people experience one identity and one stream of consciousness. that's you! but sometimes, consciousness is split and shared between multiple separate identities/people/parts. it's a rare but well documented lifelong phenomenon that has been recorded globally!
usually, this occurs due to severe trauma at a young age, but many systems (such as the one I am part of) are able to work through the trauma and have relatively normal lives (i.e. I'm still a member of a system, me and the others can just go through life without major distress or flashbacks at this point! big yay. there are still other symptoms, like dissociation and memory gaps, but they're manageable)
the major consensus between respected professionals in the field of psychology is that individuals within systems are separate from each other, and can have different names, personalities, interests, relationships, etc. this varies, of course, but that's generally what goes on. the brain forms distinct identities to better cope with highly stressful situations, and these individuals become concrete after a certain point. I'm doing REALLY GOOD these days, very happy with my life, and I never stopped being part of a system. again! lifelong, for most people!
repressing this and pretending to all be just one person can be very bad for your mental health if you're part of a system. (ask me how I know. AHH!) and it's best (in most cases! it varies. best to ask!) to treat each member of a system as their own person. it's a small amount of effort to use each person's name, and it makes a WORLD of difference.
you may have come across this concept in fiction before, but it's usually very inaccurate and very poorly represented. systems are often portrayed as scary in horror movies, or our existence is treated like a problem that needs to be fixed. that's not true! we're not scary [: we're just people. there's a lot of stigma, but people like you asking kindly in order to better understand us makes a HUGE difference, so thank you.
it can be tricky to wrap your head around, especially when you're unfamiliar with the concept. to a lot of people, it's hard to believe. I get it. but this really truly is just my normal life! it's cool if you don't understand it. mull it over, if you'd like!
If you guys were on here at 11 years old what would you be posting about
learning to notice an absence of people of color is crazy. you start seeing it everywhere. ill see a random pic of characters or people or whatever and be like "these are all white people. why"
all the babies in those baby youtube video memes. humanized character posts. like. its the little innocent shit. and like, the people making those baby memes probably arent seeking out white babies. maybe theyre just easier to find. but why are they easier to find? a complicated question, surely... but you know what it probably comes down to. someone, somewhere, maybe a lot of someones in a lot of places, made a choice. maybe knowingly, maybe not. but they made a choice. it starts to make you feel like a conspiracy theorist!!
its really funny that after 2 months this post is still making racists come into my askbox treating me like im a horrible person for pointing out that sometimes people of color are excluded from things in visible and offputting ways. cry about it
i gotta say being on the intertubes has seriously corrupted my vocabulations. what do you mean "gube". everyone is saying "loud penis". i can say "the world is my dinner" which means the same thing as "Smiling Grinner Moment" and this is known. a decent chunk of conversations are just making sounds and quoting each others typos.
loud penis. we say it whenever theres something unexpected or a non sequitur.

Smiling Grinner refers to this originally but i know it from a friend of mine so i just think of that statement on its own.
gube was originally a 5 that got typod. we renamed a few other numbers too so its one two three four gube sex six @ wine ten.
vocabulations was a modified typo (vocabularions) which. i dont know where that came from actually.
intertubes comes from the "internet is a series of tubes" quote
by the way. feel free to reblog this with your own silly sayings! what sort of out of context shenaniganery do yall get up to
