As we spend the day hiding from the #LosAngeles sky water (some people insist it’s called “rain”), and working on what we hope will become our first feature film production 🤞 we’ve had a bout of #nostalgia. This is from our own "cinema," the first #shortfilm we made after leaving our production-family on #PrettyLittleLiars. With their support, we were able to launch what has been an uncertain adventure towards our hopes and dreams. Cast members and crew from #PLL lent us their talent and spent their time. Friends from university and childhood rounded out the cast and crew. And new collaborators were brought in, people who today we hope to work with again. We look back grateful and proud. No film is ever perfect to its creator, but the memories of its making are the kindling which fuels us to keep telling stories. A single exposure of the total-run-time of ‘Immediately Afterlife,’ every decision and moment over the months of pre, production, and post distilled into one image. As an orchestra plays the flourishing opening to #Wagner’s ‘Die Walküre,’ ANNA finds her seat in a crowded opera hall and reflects on whether she has just met her dead husband, reincarnated, or just a kid playing a cruel trick. Director Jonathan Glazer, and cinematographer Harris Savides, made the choice to hold on her face in an incredible performance from Nicole Kidman, while the rest of the audience is awash in music. Eve 2018. 16 people, 2 Hors d’overs, 6 courses, 2 Mignardise, 1 milk washed cocktail, and a take home snack. — This year was tough, but hopefully pretty delicious. We, as always, took inspiration (and occasionally just recreated dishes) from Chefs we love and courses we’ve eaten through the year. We even emulated the menu concept from a restaurant we’ve only heard of (@gaggan_anand)—a fun way to keep our friends and family guessing, with an interactive reveal at the end. This process was especially present in the dessert course, a “Parsnip & Thai Tea Ganache,” which was initially inspired from a dish at our stellar meal at @dialogue.sm, and then with the gracious back-and-forth with chef @dcberan (who gave me a clue or two) and some technique learned at @chefsteps, plus an adapted @christinatosi recipe for crust. A homemade Dulce de leche was learned by following @seriouseats and an ice cream inspired by flavors from childhood in Asia, added up to one of our favorite courses of the night. Cooking, like filmmaking, is such a collaborative process even when the collaborators aren’t present. This is our yearly reminder of how hard it is to make great food for people, the trial and error (lots of error), the hours of prep and shopping, and the timing of cooking all the elements. It gives us such an appreciation for everything that both Chefs/Cooks and FOH do to make a memorable meal just that. We hope those that attended enjoyed, and look forward to another year of inspiring food.
