Working on a new floor poster for shows/signings. I'm not saying I'm 100% sticking with this one, but it's very hard to ignore and uses its nonsensical blurb to stick in your head.
So maybe I am sticking with it.

I should probably stop lurking here and start posting again. This, if you don't know or have forgotten, is Matt Maxwell speaking. I mostly write, though I do design/art as well. My current long-running project is Hazeland, a book series set in an 80s Los Angeles that's becoming something much, much stranger and weirder. Which is saying something, if you've spent any time in the actual LA of the 80s.
The latest book is called My Gifts Are Hungry, about a girl named Grace who runs away from home to go to the coolest club in LA, The Last Prayer. Maybe to meet the fabled Queen of No Tomorrows and have an adventure to tell her friends about when she gets back home.
Only she ends up staying at one of those weird old houses up in the hills, former home to movie stars and bootleggers and money who'd run west and had nowhere else to go. She also learns that the house has a mind of its own, that it's been waiting for someone like Grace for a long, long time. It has gifts to give.
And it expects gifts in return.
The book (which is done, but for another edit round) goes to Kickstarter on May 1. You can cruise over here to sign up to be notified when the campaign goes live. There's some interesting bonus items up for backers as well (custom fiction, being written into one of the books, the insane grill tier).
You've never read any of the books? That's fine. This one's a good place to start. Or you could go ahead and dive in to all four books. That's a reward tier. All signed custom to you.
Here's the link:
Not all houses are haunted by the dead. New Hazeland for 2026.
See you there! (And I'll try to be more active here.)
Guess I should still act like I have an account over here and such.
Hey there, Matt Maxwell here. I started this tumblr in 2008. No I'm not around a lot. Maybe that'll change.
I'm working on the fourth Hazeland book (which is really one you can treat like the first. Really.) Planning on having a kickstarter for it in the springtime this year. Won't ask you to put up money until the first draft is actually done, which I should see in late this month or early next.
It's about a girl who runs away from home, only to be taken in by a house of runaways. Oh, and the house is haunted. Yes, the Queen of No Tomorrows makes some extended appearances. No, they're not what you expect.

Yes, I did the cover, too.

Fake Believe - fantastic horror and crime on Kickstarter.
Hey, folks. Yeah, I don’t post here as much as I used to or maybe even should. Mea culpa. That said, I figured I’d let folks know that the third book in my Hazeland series, all weird fantasy, horror and crime on the streets of 80s LA, is up for crowdfunding at Kickstarter. We hit the goal in less than 12 hours, but that’s no reason to stop now.
If you check out the first update, there’s a link to a substantial chunk of one of the stories in Fake Believe, so you can get a taste of what you’re in for.
Sooooo… Tumblr isn’t letting me post the link. I thought we were over this sort of foolishness.
If you’re interested, go to Kickstarter and type in Fake Believe.
If you want a preview of the stories, go to highway62press.com/blog and find the title Fake Believe. Sorry we all have to go through this hassle.
New update from the mothership: returning to blogging and the rerelease of The Queen of No Tomorrows
https://www.highway62press.com/single-post/full-bleed-100-overflowing-support
As this is directly pertinent to Hazeland the books, I’m reposting here.
And now for a word from our sponsors:
Okay, going official here.
The Queen of No Tomorrows will be re-published by Highway 62 Press this summer, probably in late July/early August. Planning on two Hazeland releases a year afterwards.
More details here: http://highway62press.com
And if you’re a reviewer of horror or fantasy or crime or adjacent genres, please get in touch and I’ll get an ARC to you.
Posting to the blog named for the actual books like a professional.
Reworked HAZELAND logotype and basic treatment. Can put this to bed now.
Still trying to make beautiful things.
Yeah, there’s geometry issues with the letters, but otherwise, a solid proof of concept. Maybe to be used on a cover at some point.
The subject is, of course, based off of the Pan-Pacific Auditorium formerly in Los Angeles. Built in the 40s maybe, burned down in 1988 or 1989.
New post up at the mothership, talking about how I came up with the name of the series I’m working on (thus explaining the name change here) among other things.
