TL;DR - Over the weekend my mom and I adopted two kittens. They are 8 week old, brother and sister, “shadow tabby”, bobtail kittens. Shadow tabby means they have stripes... that I don’t think you can see in the pictures I uploaded. Potter was going to be named Sirius, but I decided against it. Sirius Black literally animorphs into a black dog and considering we already own a black dog named Mackenzie and he is quite literally the opposite of a dog, it didn’t make sense to me. Potter is going to have to be lowkey Slytherin (his collar) until he grows up and then I will be buying him this really cool Gryffindor collar for him. I don’t want him to grow out of a bought collar that I want him to wear for a long time.
Full Story (How It Happened)
Sunday (Father’s Day, 2016), my mom and I went to go look at the cats at our local shelter. We were going mainly because I saw a really cute brown tabby listed for adoption on their website named Potter. (Read about that on this post.) Before we walked in my mom said that she had no money and that we are just looking. I understood and said “Let’s just go in.” We did and once in the lobby we saw kittens in a few cages with their fosters next to them, trying to get people to adopt them. Ignoring them for the meantime, we went to the actual cat kennel and looked for my little guy. Unfortunately, like I had suspected, the little guy named Potter had been adopted. (To keep this story short I’m going to just keep out the details about how horribly rude this volunteer guy was to us when we asked about euthanasia in this kennel and when he ushered us out of the cat kennels because it was closing time.)
I was really upset that the original Potter kitten was not available anymore and very angry at that volunteer for being so ugly to us. I wanted to leave right then and there. I knew I could just get a cat from Craigslist or from someone who really needed to get rid of one. My mom saw these two kittens in a cage in the lobby and fell in love instantly though. (She’s been saying for the longest time how she wants a black cat, cause her friend has one and it’s awesome. I don’t know why the color matters to her, but she was set on that.) I personally do not prefer black cats. My experience with them have not been good and I don’t like them, so I told her straight up “No, I don’t want them.”
Their foster lady was so kind and talked highly of them to my mom while I turned around and looked at this little orange tabby named Josh. He wasn’t too excited about being held by me and his foster said he does not like dogs. That’s an instant no go for me, because my mom has a big black lab that absolutely adores cats and would want to love on one. So I gave up and I turned around to involve myself in the conversation with my mom and the black kittens foster.
I never would have thought that I’d like these kittens, but I picked up the little boy and he purred up a storm. I loved that. By this time I still thought we couldn’t get any though cause we had no money. I put him down and my mom turned to me and said “Do you want them?” to which I replied “We can’t afford it mom.” Somehow while I was looking at the orange tabby, my mom had figured out that this weekend, of all weekends, was free kitten adoptions (if you adopt two in one go)! Apparently, they needed space in the kennels and needed to adopt them quick. Sooooo, we got them. I was still set on the name Potter, so I named him such and my mom named the little girl Quinn cause it’s a cute name. They are 8 week old, brother and sister, “shadow tabby”, bobtail kittens. Shadow tabby means they have stripes... that I don’t think you can see in the pictures I uploaded.
