He didn't even start watching hockey again until a few weeks ago . After he retired , it was months until he could even bear to look up scores and stats . But this thing happening with the Centaurs , the fact that not just one but two of his former teammates and the closest thing he's had to friends in his league are playing for the same team ? It's enough to catch even his interest . So of course he saw the game . And of course the second he knew Hazy would be back in the locker room , probably running through every minor mistake and mishap in his head , Ryan called him .
" It wasn't just you out there . " And sure , it's the thing that they all say . But in this case , it's true . In his own opinion , Wyatt has always been criminally underutilized . Not only is he a fantastic Goalie with almost superhuman awareness of everything happening on the ice , but he's a great team player . Always finding ways to lift others up , finding ways to cut the tension . " Chouinard was off his game and a half second late to everything and Dykstra couldn't compensate for it . They let too much through . "
It's strange , how not strange it feels to talk about the game in this place . Pacing back and forth in his now color-drenched living room , stepping around the litany of papers and pens and instruments that Fabian left out after his latest late-night writing session . For the first time , Ryan is talking about a sport that he loved from a place that feels like home . He can think about hockey and not feel that bone chilling dread of wondering if that's all there is for him .
" Hazy , " Ryan's voice is soft . " They had about 40 shots on goal . You let in 3 and one of those was definitely an interference that they didn't call . " It was agonizing to watch , really . Agonizing because he knows how Wyatt will beat himself up for it , but also because somewhere in the middle of the second period , the thought started nagging at him that he could have done better if he'd been there himself . " You know if you keep moping in your cubby like Batman , Rozy's gonna try and give you a pep talk . Or worse , drag you out for drinks . "
ㅤㅤㅤDespite his misery, Wyatt finds himself exhaling a faint laugh at Ryan's teasing, the tight knot in his throat easing just enough for the goalie to draw a full, steadying breath. It helps, a little, but Hayes still feels weighted down (both by exhaustion and with sense of disappointment). He can't help feeling responsible for the loss, even knowing this sport is about more than just one single player on the ice…
ㅤㅤㅤ“.. .yeah. Ok, I know.” Hazy says with a sigh, opening his eyes and peeking at the locker room beyond his cubby. Price is right, Ilya's watching him like a hawk. Rozanov's expression is inscrutable, but Wyatt finds he's not worried that his captain might be angry with him. He knows Ilya doesn't point fingers or place blame, he's too good of a leader for that. If anything, Rozzy is more likely to be doing the same thing as Hayes… blaming himself.
ㅤㅤㅤBlinking quickly against a swell of emotion (because god, he loves this team), Wyatt murmurs down the phone line, sounding helpless, “… I just. I don't want to let them down, Ry. Everyone in this barn is trying so hard.” He sucks in another shuddering breath, ignoring the hitch in his words, “… It's my job to shut the door and keep it shut.”
ㅤㅤㅤHe wishes Price were here, Wyatt wishes it so bad. Dickie and Chouinard are great, they're awesome defensemen and good buddies and Hazy loves playing with them, he does. But he also misses Ryan, his steady support and easy kindness on and off the ice. The goalie finally has a team worth fighting for and all he wants is to share that with his best friend.
ㅤㅤㅤ“The team deserves to win.” Hayes adds, finally, knowing that Pricey will understand the things he doesn't say, about Toronto and their former barn, “…We… deserve it. Don't we?”

I think that if Hayes ever got a goalie goal Ilya would kiss him straight on the mouth and Shane wouldn't even get upset.
In fact, I think most the Centaurs would kiss Wyatt after that, honestly
He perfectly adjusts to her as always, allowing her room to bury her face in his neck and just breathe him in. This was her safe place, completely encased in Wyatt, and it was the only place she wanted to crumble. It often wasn't an option at work, as much as they had rooms for them to take moments in, she was a doctor, and unless she saw something truly horrific, she powered through with the knowledge that at the end of it all, she'd come home to her husband. Being there for people during the worst times of their lives made it worth it, and she loved those kids so much. It's what made this so hard; it was impossible to not get a little attached at times. She lets out a shaky breath at his immediate response, fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt and letting the familiar sound of his breathing as well as the Batman rerun soothe her. "Yeah, just a lot went wrong for some patients today, and one of the nurses is new. She's amazing, but it's a lot when you first start out." Lisa presses a kiss to his collarbone, shifting to wrap her legs around him now so that she was latched around him and pulls herself as close as she physically can. "Just found it harder to switch off today." She swallows past the lump in her throat, tears stinging her eyes as she refuses to let them fall and she sniffs slightly. "How was your day?"
ㅤㅤㅤWyatt's broad palm sweeps a slow path down the length of Lisa's spine, a firm caress from her shoulder blades to her waist then back up again. It's something Hazy can do (and has done) for hours at a time, a steady point of contact that anchors him to this miraculous woman, reassuring them both. When Lisa wraps her legs around his waist, the goalie tightens his other arm, crushing her even more tightly against him, as if Wyatt can somehow absorb her into his body and shield her from the cruelties of the world.
ㅤㅤㅤHe can feel the unsteadiness of her breath against his skin, the tremble of her lips as she brushes a kiss to his collarbone. The goalie's throat tightens with dismay, his heart cracking. He's never been able to bear the sight of Lisa's tears…
ㅤㅤㅤ"I'm sorry…" Hazy says quietly, nuzzling into his wife's soft hair, still half up in a ponytail, “that sounds really hard, even for a capable badass like you.” He knows too well that Lisa takes every incident involving her patients personally, no matter whether it was something within her control or not. And she's equally protective of the nurses, just as they are of her.
ㅤㅤㅤDrawing in a fortifying breath (filled with the scent of Lisa's shampoo), Wyatt tips his face lower to brush his lips against her temple. He hums a thoughtful noise at Lisa's question, sensing she's looking for a distraction “…yeah, it was good. Everyone's shaking off the pre-season cobwebs…well, except Roz. Oh, and Bood has another barbeque planned.”

He worries constantly about annoying his team with questions and anxieties that might come across as childish ( they already view him as a kid, but that doesn't mean he needs to behave like one ), so being late-ish for plans someone else has been nice enough to include him in is just adding to the worry. Hazy doesn't seem impatient or annoyed, though. None of them ever do, really.
He hums in what could be perceived as agreement, feels bad for forgetting to call his parents yesterday --- but he'd been packing for their roadie, making sure that his home was clean and neat before they left, making sure that there was nothing in the fridge that might go bad or laundry to delay the washing of his gear when they finally returned to ottawa. the call to his parents had slipped his mind, and his mother had worried. "I don't think she's watched the game highlights yet. She didn't say anything."
Hazy's enthusiasm is infectious, though; Luca's small smile grows, lighting his entire face up. He really has been looking forward to this since the trip had been proposed; he's always been a casual fan of superheroes, has seen most of the on-screen media put out by the big comic companies, but he hasn't had an actual comic since his age was a single digit ( it had been an issue of Spiderman, he remembers that much ).
"I like the subway," he nods - the subway is normal, practically anonymous. If they get attention on the train, it'll most likely be because of Hazy's height.
He can't help but laugh at the antics of Hazy and Dykstra as they pass the massive d-man in the hallway. Luca spies a small candy haul near the vending machine, reaches out as Hazy smacks the brim of Dickie's baseball cap and steals a pack of gum from the top ( he'll replace it later, probably give Dickie more than he left with ). He rips the top of the pack as they emerge out onto the street, offers Hazy a stick first before taking one for himself.
"---Which stop is Midtown Comics on?"
ㅤㅤㅤWyatt plucks a piece of gum from the offered pack, unwrapping it as he marches with purpose towards the entrance of NYC's underground subway system. Glancing over his shoulder at Luca, the goalie grins as he pops the whole stick into his mouth, "Heck if I know. The store location in Times Square is supposed to be the biggest, so I figure we'll just hop off the line somewhere around that. There's lots of options, how hard can it be?"
ㅤㅤㅤIt's a very Hazy thing to say. Wyatt Hayes, loveable golden retriever that he is, tends to move through the world with an irrepressible (if unsubstantiated) belief things will work out if he just puts his best foot forward. Usually, the goalie's hunch is correct, but it can still be stressful for those unaccustomed to his relentlessly positive outlook. Blowing a bubble with his gum, Hazy jogs down the stairs to the ticketing turnstyles for the subway. He stops at the contactless OMNY reader and waves Luca to go through the barrier first, swiping his phone. "c'mon kid, I've got the fare. Just don't let me lose track of the time."
ㅤㅤㅤOnce inside the station, Wyatt pauses to consider the intricate underground map of overlapping train lines, finally pointing at a yellow line bisecting the length of the island. "Looks like the Q Line is the fastest, it should be here in like five minutes…" He turns to grin at Haas, excitement clear, "…which means we'll be in Time Square in fifteen, tops. You ready to stock up on Amazing Spider-Man?"
