[12 Years Ago: The Funeral]
Taeyongâs aunt and uncle drive the black suv over a long and bumpy road as they leave the cemetery.
He looks out through the window through teary eyes as he remembers his parents and the last conversation he had with them.
âTaeyong-Ah! Youâve done so well, your science project got first place?! Where do you want to eat? We have to celebrate!â
A tear rolls down his cheek as he remembers his momâs excited face and his dadâs proud smile.
But he didnât get a chance to tell them where he wanted to go, as his dad was called in for work right after.
Once again, Taeyongâs dad would have to fly out to Korea for business, leaving he and his mom to celebrate alone.
Taeyong remembered being upset at the urgency of his fatherâs trip and how his father always agreed to leave them behind for work; he was so furious this time, he didnât even look at him when he said goodbye.
But the young boy would come to regret his pettiness.
His mom accompanied his dad to the airport, and thatâs when it happened.
He didnât know exactly how the car accident happened. He overheard the cops say things like â18-wheeler,â and âbrake malfunction.â However, none of it made sense.
Why him? Why his parents? Why did his dad have to leave for work that night?
Taeyong was confused, upset, and devastated. It felt surreal. He stared at the door, waiting for his parents to come through it at any moment.
Too many thoughts, too many emotions, too many new faces and people he didnât want to talk to. Too many questions.
âwhat do you want to eat, Taeyong?â
âDid you sleep well, Taeyong?â
âHow can I help you, Taeyong?â
He wished it would all end. He wished he could just go home and run into the arms of his happy parents again.
The ride home finally ended and as soon as Taeyong entered his house, his family members stopped talking and turned to him. He hated the way they looked at him, they pitied him and it pissed him off. Everything pissed him off. He never saw these people, he didnât have a good relationship with any of them. And now, they filled his home and gossiped and ate food like they really cared for his parents in the first place.
He took his black dress shoes off and was about to run upstairs and lock himself in his room before his aunt took hold of his hand.
âTaeyong..before you go, thereâs someone you have to meet.â His paternal aunt looked on him with a sincerely sad expression. Her eyes were just like his fatherâs, deep, warm. They were comforting and calming, even with all the madness around them.
She was the only one that really made Taeyong feel normal, so he didnât mind doing what she said.
He nodded slowly and wiped his teary eyes.
She took his hand and led him to his fatherâs office upstairs.
âIâll be right back.â
A few minutes later, she brought a young girl into the room and locked the door behind them. She was small and looked familiar, but Taeyong couldnât figure out how he knew her.
âTaeyong..you donât know this, but.. this is Hae-Ju.. sheâs your sister.â
Taeyongâs aunt started slowly, she waited to see Taeyongâs initial reaction.
Would he lash out? Would he cry harder? She wasnât sure, so she wanted to be careful and give him time.
Hae-Ju hid behind her leg, peaking out from behind to see the strange boyâs face.
She was also grieving and didnât completely understand the situation.
Neither of them knew of each otherâs existence until now.
âyour father..left often to take care of Hae-Ju in Korea..he planned to tell you about her and to introduce the two of you later this year..Taeyong..â his aunt sighed and place both hands on Taeyongâs shoulders.
âIâm sorry..Iâm so sorry that this is happening under these circumstances, but I wanted you to know that youâre not alone.â
âHe lied to me.â Taeyongâs eyes started to fill with water again. The fire in his chest started to build as he thought about all the times his father said heâd be going to Korea for work.
âTaeyong..please.â His aunt started.
Taeyong brushed her off and shook his head.
âTaeyong..your father loved you and her..he just couldnât find the right time to tell you.â
Tears started to roll down Taeyongâs cheeks. He darted past his aunt and was about leave the room when he felt a pair of tiny arms wrap around his waist.
âPlease..brother..donât leave me alone.â Hae-Juâs soft, high-pitched voice entered Taeyongâs ears.
He was frightened by the sudden embrace, but couldnât push the small girl away. This simple hug calmed the fire. He felt a small glimpse of hope and belonging start to build. He was upset with his father, but he now realized that he wasnât the only one grieving.
He would have to be responsible and take care of his little sister now. Itâs what his parents would have expected from him had they still been alive.
And so, Taeyong turned to face her and hugged her back.
They cried together in their fatherâs office for what felt like hours.
They bonded over the next few weeks theyâd spend together and when the time came for Hae-Ju to leave for Korea, Taeyong found himself feeling immensely sad again.
His aunt gave him the option to stay with his maternal uncle and their family or to head back to Korea with her, but Taeyong chose to stay. He was afraid of the difference in culture and didnât want to leave his best friend, Yuta.
Yuta helped him through everything, he couldnât bare to be miles away from him when he was one of the few people in his life that still made him happy.
Things wouldâve gone differently for poor Taeyong had he gone to Korea and lived peacefully with his aunt.
Nonetheless, heâd miss Hae-Ju. He was thankful that he got to know her and swore to take his duties as older brother seriously. She was only 3 years younger than him, but she was so small and innocent. She needed his protection, for they only had each other now.
âIâll visit you every year and when I make money, Iâll visit every month!â Taeyong said as he hugged Hae-Ju in the airport.
Hae-Ju smiled widely and held out her pinky. âPinky promise?â
Taeyong giggled. âPinky promise.â
They linked their pinkies and hugged one last time before she left.
ââââ
[12 Years Later: 2 Months without y/n]
Taeyong laughed to himself as he remembered Hae-Juâs small face when they first made their pinky promise.
He was excited to see his sister. He hadnât kept well on his promise, but he hoped she would just understand that part of adulting is prioritizing and sometimes, abandoning promises.
His private jet landed, but he was too distracted by thoughts of you to notice the pilot telling him itâs okay to release his seatbelt.
The way you said his name, your smile and laugh, the way you held his hand gently. It all made him soft. He missed you so much, but things were bad..so bad now. Could he ever give you the life you deserved?
âSir..sir?â
The pilot tapped his shoulder.
Taeyong turned around quickly with wide eyes.
âWhat the hell do you want? Why are you touching me?â He said with disdain.
The pilot sighed. Youâd think after a long ass flight, Taeyong would be more respectful to the man that flew the plane for hours without rest.
âYouâve been here for about 10 minutes, sir.â
âWell, why didnât you tell me I could take my seat belt off?â Taeyong started to unbuckle his belt, then grabbed his bag as the pilot rolled his eyes.
ââââ
âTaeyong!!!â Hae-Ju ran to Taeyong, jumping into his arms and burying her face into his chest.
Taeyong chuckled. âWoah, woah there, Iâm not as strong as I look.â
Hae-Ju pulled away and smiled. She pinched his cheeks while he tried to shake his head and get away from her.
âTaeyong-oppa, youâve been eating well!â
Taeyong nodded and giggled. However, the reality was he wasnât eating, nor sleeping well since you left him alone. He was tired, but glad that his face didnât seem to show it.
Hae-Ju looked adorable as always. She wore a bright yellow sweatshirt with her collegeâs name in bold letters across the front and white sneakers.
âCome on! Letâs go get kalguksu!â
Hae-Ju took his hand and dragged him to her car. She shouted to the driver the name of the restaurant.
She knew Taeyong loved kalguksu especially when it was made correctly in Korea.
It was clear to see that Hae-Ju loves Taeyong. She didnât know what he did back home. She had her suspicions especially with all the tattoos and the strange hair color, but she didnât really care. Because what she did know was that he took good care of her and always made sure she was okay.
He was a splitting image of their father in both physical and personality aspects.
Thatâs why she was drawn to him from the moment they met, she always saw the good in him. She always saw her father whom she missed dearly.
And Taeyong was reminded of his father when he looked at her too. Her eagerness and positivity, her bright smile, button nose and crinkling eyes all reminded him of his father.
Together, they tried to make do with no longer having him around. Yes, he did have an affair with another woman and lie to him and his mother, but Taeyong couldnât hate him. He could only deal with the consequences and thankfully, he was given the best little sister in the process.
Both he and Hae-Ju decided to work hard like him and honor his name, because regardless of the negative things he did when he was alive, he deserved to be forgiven.
âHowâs school?â Taeyong said before slurping his noodles.
âItâs okay, chemistry is kicking my butt, but Iâll be okay!â Hae-Ju smiled.
âDo you want me to handle him?â Taeyong wiped his mouth.
âhandle who?â Hae-Juâs brows furrowed as she twirled her chopstick.
âThis chemistry guy.â Taeyong tried to keep a straight face.
Hae-Ju bursted out into laughter and covered her mouth. âyouâre so stupid.â
The two caught up for about two hours in the restaurant. Talking about everything from Hae-Juâs school and major to Taeyongâs âjobâ as an art collector and seller, and from korean politics to Hae-Juâs messy love life. Taeyong laughed at it all because the irony was that it wasnât nearly as messy as his love life, but Hae-Ju was still overwhelmed.
He would zone out a few times and think about you and how much youâd love her. He knew you two would get along so well, based on the way you talked. He didnât even remember why he never told you about her. Maybe itâs because heâs so used to protecting her and keeping her name in the dark, it slipped his mind.
He hoped Hae-Ju didnât notice that he was distracted.
Taeyong cleared his throat and shook his head to get your face out of it for just a moment.
âThereâs another reason..why Iâm here, Hae-Ju.â
The mood grew more serious.
âWhat do you mean? Iâm not the only reason you came to this wonderful country? Wait, are you into kpop now?â
Taeyong laughed. âNo..no, youâre the main reason why Iâm here..but thereâs someone Iâd like you to meet.â
âYou have a significant other! You?! THE Taeyong..youâre capable of love?!â Hae-Juâs eyes widened.
Taeyong never talked about his love life around her so she just assumed it didnât exist.
âYes..weâre engaged..actually.â
Hae-Ju spit out her water. âYouâre getting MARRIED?â
Taeyong couldnât help but smile.
âYes.â
Hae-Ju couldnât contain herself, she jumped up from her seat and hugged Taeyong tightly.
âIâm so happy for you! Whoâs the lucky person?â
âYouâll meet her soon, I promise.â
âOh my God!! I gotta get a dress! Is she nice? How old is she? Where is she from? Does she have long or short hair? What color will the wedding be? Oh my God does this mean youâre gonna be a father soon? Am I gonna be an aunt?! Do you-â
Hae-Ju rambled on, she didnât even stop for breath.
âHae-Ju..I promise to answer all your burning questions but Iâm tired.â Taeyong laughed and held his head down. He knew heâd have to tell her at some point but why did it have to be after his 13 hour long flight?
âTomorrow! Can I meet her tomorrow?â
Hae-Ju anxiously waited for Taeyong to respond.
He looked up to the ceiling and thought for a moment.
âPlease!! Please, I wanna meet her so badly. Whatâs her name? Is she young or old? Whatâs her favorite color? I could get her a present! What-â
âOkay! Okay! Tomorrow for brunch!â
Taeyong closed his eyes and rubbed his temple.
Hae-Ju jumped up and hoorayed one the restaurant, ignoring the glares and snickers of onlookers just trying to enjoy their meal.
ââââ
[12:30 PM the next day]
âShe should be here in a few minutes.â
Taeyong pulled out a chair from the round table for his sister.
âGreat! Do you think sheâll like me?â
Hae-Ju asked as she sat down in the chair.
âOf course sheâll like you!â
Taeyong waved over the waiter.
âCoffee.â
The waiter quickly nodded and went to the kitchen.
âIt doesnât hurt to say âplease.ââ Hae-Ju scolded Taeyong for his abruptness.
She shouldâve been used to it by now, but politeness was one thing he did not take from their father.
âWhy say please when I could just say what I want?â He shrugged his shoulders.
Hae-Ju shook her head and was about to respond when her mouth dropped. She watched as a slim lady with long black hair approached the table. She was incredibly beautiful and radiant, like a model in the flesh.
Taeyong was confused and turned to see what she was looking at.
It was her.
The woman heâd spend the rest of his life with. The woman he would claim his love for.
He stood up and pulled the third chair at the table out for her to sit on.
She smiled widely as Hae-Ju stared in disbelief.
âHae-Ju...â Taeyong chuckled at the sight of his star-stricken sister.
âThis is..â
âXena..Itâs so nice to meet you Hae-Ju.â Xena smiled widely and shook her hand while bowing.

to all the boys iâve before; lee jeno
Dear Jeno,
You were best friends with Jaemin, that much I knew of you. I knew that you were quite popular for being undeniably attractive, but what I didnât know when I first met you was how much of a klutz youâd turn out to be.
If someone would have told me that you, Lee Jeno, would be spelling three beakers of acidic acid in the first week of Chemistry class, Iâd tell them to get a new brain. After that showcase of lack of physical coordination, I avoided you at all costs. I didnât want to get hurt in some Final Destination-esque way.
When we had a take home project together in science class, I was sure that youâd have me do it all by myself, either because Jaemin told you about me and how I broke his heart, or because you simply wouldnât want to do it. But you agreed, and that day, on the way to your house, you wanted to stop by the animal shelter.
That made my heart flutter a bit, seeing you coo at the animals, especially the kittens and cats. When we got to your house I asked if Jaemin ever talked about me, and you just laughed and shook your head, saying âwhy would he?â.Â
We became really good friends, some would even say we were dating. But we werenât. We couldnât when you were filled with self-doubt and I was filled with dilemmas about who I loved. I remember one day you just exploded at me, and things were never the same since. I know you didnât mean to hurt me, but I also know I couldnât ever help you and give you the attention you needed when I would have thoughts about someone else. About Jisung.
When we returned to school the next day, the teacher decided to switch up the seats. We were sat on opposite sides of the room. We just drifted apart. We stopped talking. Sorry about that.

ââââââââ
It was just another Thursday night at home. Your parents left earlier that evening to go on a cruise to the Bahamas to celebrate their anniversary so you had the entire house to yourself.
Your father was a famous and wealthy pastor with money to afford an incredible mansion and luxury cars. Most people didnât understand how someone that preached about humility and giving back to the less fortunate could live in a twenty bedroom house with a twelve car garage.
There was a certain irony behind it that pissed people off.
Taeyong was one of them. Taeyong and his gang had been watching the pastor, plotting for a robbery. He hated everything about religion and the fact that a man, such as your father, was capitalizing off of the hearts of devoted Christians irritated him. He wanted to take everything away from the pastor that lived in his community because he felt like he was the real criminal. Furthermore, your father never told you or your mother, but some of his wealth did come from his involvement in gangs and the drug trading that occurred in the community. He would use the churchgoers money to purchase large amounts of cocaine from other countries, then sell it on the black market at triple times the street rate. This was sold to business men that had money to spend and just needed their fix, regardless of the cost. The means at which they got their drugs was safer than getting it off the streets anyway. Your father funded the dark web website that almost functioned like the Amazon for drug trades, order today, get it tomorrow with âprimeâ shipping. Taeyong didnât like that someone with a good reputation like your father had controlled such a large business. But he also didnât like that his men were the ones that organized the deals on the website with little reward. They put their lives on the line to get it to these men, avoiding the police at all costs, but your father was behind on paying his workers by five months. Taeyong threatened him several times, but the pastor blocked his phone number and email. What he didnât know was that Taeyong has access to all of his emails and text messages anyway, so he knew that your father would be gone on a twelve day cruise to the Bahamas. Taeyong took this as the perfect opportunity to drop by his house and well, âborrowâ a few things. He knew that the pastor had a daughter, but what he didnât know was that youâd be home from college for summer break. So there you are, flipping through channels, trying to find something to watch when you stumble across the late-night adult channels. Your thumb hovered over the âupâ button as you watched a woman have sex with a man on a fluffy bed. Your eyes widened at how graphic it was. The blonde ladyâs was making strange faces while the man held her legs and pushed into her.
