“hmm.” francesca listens to brynn’s plight genuinely, no sarcastic reply ready on her tongue ( for once ). “sounds like a real struggle.” that sounded sarcastic even though she meant it, and she chides herself for it. “sucks that you got locked in here… wonder how we could get out. i used to know how to pick a lock, but it’s been a while. we could try yelling for help, but… you tried it once and look where it got us.” a smile tugs at her lips, francesca unable to resist the urge to tease the other girl just a little. 

brynn opens her mouth to argue before catching the subtle smile on francesca’s lips. “ha ha, you’re so funny,” she says with an eye roll, a smile of her own slipping through in spite of herself. “the one day i don’t have a bobby pin,” she muses, backtracking to francesca’s original thought. her hair’s usually piled on top of her head to keep it out of her face and off her neck, but today it flows free. she pushes untamed curls back, wishing for even a wimpy elastic to pull it back; she feels strangely exposed having her hair loose. “service keeps cutting out whenever i try to text someone, too.”

     of course if it comes that easy, there has to be a tagline attached. alex sighs, frustrated as she runs her fingers through the ends of her hair. “ yeah, maybe it’s the natural disaster or something. ” it’s full of snark, so much that her voice even surprises herself, and she softens a degree or two. “ you know, instead of torturing me i’m sure there’s a way i can actually pay you back. i know these stupid ‘favors’ aren’t really doing anything. ”

brynn knows she’s hit a nerve when alex all but snaps at her, and she takes a seat on the curb once she’s sure it won’t soak her jeans. “you bring up an excellent point,” she says, her tone tinted with sarcasm. “how do you propose you do that? the last time i checked, these stupid ‘favors’ were the only way you could ‘pay me back’ and keep me from reporting you to the proper authorities.”

       things had been disastrous to say the least, but with things slowly settling down, tatum felt a stroke of guilt wedge its way in. jude had been in that accident with caleb, and with all the chaos, she hadn’t quite checked on him the way she should’ve. physically, he seemed fine, but a car accident was fairly traumatic -– as his friend, she should at least seek him out to make sure he’s doing okay. so with her things finally settled in place, she makes her way down a few halls until she reaches his new dorm, wrapping her knuckles against the door and waiting patiently for someone to answer. it takes a lot longer than expected, and she’s just about to leave when it swings open. “ oh. ” the harsh tone might do something to deter her, but tatum’s distracted by the sight of brynn in a towel. a few rogue, damp curls clinging her neck, the sheen of sweat across her forehead and the bridge of her nose, the pink tinge to her cheeks from the heat. tatum feels her own flush in return. “ i-i.. i was looking for jude, actually. ” she clears her throat. “ do you know when he’ll be back? ”

brynn’s eyes focus in on tatum’s reaction, and it takes her a moment to remember that she’s only wearing a towel. that would explain the blush currently tinting the cheeks of the girl in her doorway, though whether it’s from pure embarrassment or something more is still up in the air; further investigation is definitely needed. she can’t help the eyeroll that follows tatum naming her ex; it’s a knee-jerk reaction, honestly. “who knows; he’s not exactly know for punctuality or reliability.” she pushes the door open a little further and turns away, clutching her towel to her body as she walks further into the suite. “you’re welcome to wait, if you want. otherwise, close the door; not gonna let just anyone walk in and watch me dress.” she glances back at tatum in the doorway, shooting her a look that isn’t quite flirty but close enough.

“wow, what an original insult.” fran can’t help but roll her eyes. this is so juvenile. she wishes she’d never opened the closet door in the first place. she notes brynn stepping back. are you afraid of me? she wonders, but she bites her tongue. “i’m not expecting anyone to kiss my ass! but a simple thank you would suffice.” scanning the closet, she tries the door knob one more time in a futile effort at escape. “why the fuck were you in here, anyway?”

brynn drops onto an overturned bucket, chin falling into her hand as a defeated sigh leaves her lips. “thank you,” she says, and her tone lacks its usual bite. “the bathroom light has been out all week, and maintenance isn’t answering my emails. i figured i could figure out how to change a light bulb myself, since i’m tired of stepping in puddles of water that my roommates leave behind.” she lets out a humorless laugh, eyes flicking up to meet fran’s. “turns out one ‘spoiled rich girl’ can’t screw in a light bulb, after all.”

     even though brynn is telling her she’s right, alex doesn’t feel much better. in fact, she feels worse. brynn’s tormenting isn’t unordinary, but alex is under a lot of stress lately and this isn’t doing anything to help. “ of course.” she finds her patience thinning, but reminds herself that she owes brynn still, no matter how irritated she feels. so, she resets to the original position, holding as asked until brynn calls action. only, as hard as alex tries, the grimace on her face is almost impossible to remove. it’s ruining the shot and she knows it. “ can’t we like, take five or something? ”

the shot won’t work, and she knows that half a second in. luckily it isn’t the olden days when film happened with actual film, or making alex stand there for a shot that’ll never be used would be a complete waste instead of just a waste of time. but she nods once at alex’s request, presenting herself as lenient when on her real set brynn is anything but. “take ten, even; you look like shit.”

“i don’t know, maybe you locked yourself in like a dumbass?” the words fly out before fran can carefully consider them like she usually does. there’s plenty of tension — sparks fly, threatening to catch on fire in the electricity spanning between the two. it’s only intensified by the direct insult. fran takes a step towards her, a burning sensation of anger intensifying deep in her stomach. maybe it was just the situation, or maybe it was just the fact that brynn hadn’t even acknowledged her since the rec room, but she felt so brittle she could snap. “listen, i didn’t have to help you — you could try maybe, you know, not biting the hand that feeds you? either way, you don’t have to be such a fucking asshole.”

“right, because that’s totally something i would do. there’s only one dumbass in here, and i’m unfortunately looking at her.” her jaw clenches, eyes blazing until fran takes a step closer to her, and brynn instinctively takes a step back to keep as much space as possible between the two of them in their close quarters. she mentally kicks herself for showing that sign of weakness, but she can’t take it back now. “maybe you shouldn’t expect people to kiss your ass for every small act of ‘kindness’ you perform. i don’t owe you anything, and neither does anybody else.”
