“Marty?” Marya looked around to see if someone had somehow been present aside from the two of them, but within her sight, she had seen no one. “I don’t know a Marty. And ‘why a cape?’ Because, my dear, they’re elegant and make such a grand sweeping motion. They’re perfect for dramatics and symbolism is hidden in the details.”
“I get that. But...why would anyone be wearing a cape in here right now?” It wasn´t that she really cared, but somehow the question had gotten out before she could stop herself. “And Marty is my boss. I´m supposed to do a burger and milkshake delivery. But...apparently this is the wrong office.”

No good. He wonders what she means by that. It sounds ominous, but he figures very few people would have glowing things to say about their ex; they’re an ex for a reason. “If – if it helps, I don’t really think she’d – I mean, people sort of see what they want to see when they’re, like, in love? So, I – I doubt she’d accept a warning? But she – I’m sure she’ll figure it out eventually?” He doesn’t know when on earth he began feeling qualified to hand out love advice, but here they are. "But it’s fine! I don’t, like – I don’t mind listening?” If anything, hearing someone else’s problems is a distraction from his own. He was supposed to be meeting his mother tonight who, for the first time in weeks, had a night off from work. It seemed too good to be true from the start, but Evan had been cautiously optimistic, only to receive a text from her when he’d arrived saying she wouldn’t be able to make it. That would’ve been his cue to leave, but then he was approached with talk of exes and orders and his plans of escape were thwarted. He doesn’t really want anything – he just wants to go home – but it would be impolite not to. “I – if it’s okay, a hot chocolate would be great? I have to – I, um, I can’t really stay long.”
Penelope gave him a nod. “You´re probably right. I saw what I wanted for the longest time with him. I just hope she sees what kind of a jerk he is before it´s too late.” She picked up a cloth and wiped off the counter with it. He seemed like a nice boy, probably a little too young for her to bother him with her problems. Still, Penelope was glad that he had taken time out of his day to listen, as opposed to some other people who had only given her some shitty advice on the matter. looking at you monty .
“Sure, hot chocolate is a can do. It´s on the house, for being such a good listener.” She gave him a smile. “Would you like some marshmallows...oh see, I didn´t even ask your name.” She pointed at her name tag. “Mine´s Penelope.”

“Tardiness is inexcusable, my dear,” Marya D. says without turning around. She’s trying to sort out the measurements on the mannequin, something she could have been doing with her model if they had shown up on time. She turned finally. “Oh.”
“You’re not who I was expecting. Still… you’re about the same height and size… how do you feel about wearing a cape for a bit?”
“I...excuse me?” Seriously, this was the last time she did anyone any favors. Penelope was carrying a bag that was filled with fries and milkshakes and immediately felt like she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. “I´,...just here to deliver an order. Marty sent me. We usually don´t do delivery, but he said it was for a friend.” She paused. “...why a cape?”

He’s never had the misfortune of being in a similar situation to the one described (on account of having never dated anyone and therefore having no exes to elude) but he contemplates the question regardless, frowning delicately. “Hiding? That’s what… that’s what I think I’d do. Hide until they’ve gone. Or maybe if you’re, like, bitter about the way things ended you could make a scene about it – but I wouldn’t have the guts to, personally. I don’t really… I’m not sure if there is a protocol actually? I think you’d be expected to put on a brave face and keep working.”
Penelope rolled her eyes. “I wish I could have made a scene. But that would have just played right into his cards. I should have warned that girl though, he´s no good.” She sighed, shaking her head. “But I apologize for loading that onto you. I doubt you came here to listen to my problems,” She offered him a smile. “What can I get you?”
lastoneyoudexpect:
“Ah. Well. That’s a different matter, then,” Monty responded, leaning back in his seat. “Him being prone to cheating and violence – and potential stalking? – is very different than him being just an ex you don’t get along with.” The man shrugged and sipped at his tea. “If it’s a matter of safety, maybe warning his date is the right course of action? I’m afraid I don’t really have all that much experience in the matter.”
She sighed. Really, she should have learned from the times she´d ended up with men as awful as him, but somehow it seemed like Penelope was always drawn to the wrong people. “He´s always had a temper. I left him the moment he threw the vase at me. I´m sure he just came here to gloat. He knew I always wanted to be a singer. And he never thought I´d make it,”
you know who tells me no? nobody!
ncrvouswrecks:
“If I were to go back and relive it, that would be a good idea. Don’t know how I would feel hitting his lover, but my ex-husband? I would feel minimum remorse. Well, enough about that. What… happened? I mean, yes, your ex and their date, but what happened after? Are you okay?
“Well no use of dwelling on the past. It was fine. I glared at him and served them. I think he just came here to gloat, so I let him do it. I need this job and getting fired would just play into his cards.”
lastoneyoudexpect:
“I mean – and I hope you don’t mind my saying this. These may very well be just the ramblings of a stranger’s poor attempt at advice – if you’re the common denominator in all your failed relationships, including your interactions after you break up, have you ever considered taking a look at your own behavior? You did just talk about actively sabotaging his date.”
“Yes well I did talk about sabotaging his date because during our relationship he had affairs with three different women, two of those at the same time, and when I confronted him he threw a vase at me. At least I only talked about sabotaging his date. He also knows exactly that I work here. There´s a billion diners in New York City where he could have gone.”

lastoneyoudexpect:
“Awkwardly having to deal with your ex at your workplace is one thing, but I’m certain the ‘standard protocol’ avoids intentional sabotage.” Monty replied. “Maybe stick with the ice cream solution for now?”
“I wish it didn´t have to be awkward. You know how people say they get along well with their ex? Somehow that´s never been me. Maybe I just get with the wrong guys all the time.”
ncrvouswrecks:
“I don’t know the protocol for seeing your ex and their date coming into your place of work, I only know about your ex and their date coming home for dinner then making out in your den. No matter the case, dropping a plate of vegetables and hummus onto the carpet is not the answer.”
“Well that sounds...awful? I mean that´s not something you do. You should have thrown that plate at them. They´d have deserved it. Especially since it was your home. If I throw anything I might get fired though,”
thouscndways:
“oh—this is a funny idea—pretend like you don’t know him. it would throw him off guard.”
“That´s an interesting idea. It would throw him off, since he´s a narcissistic asshole that thinks the world revolves around him, and him only.”
lastoneyoudexpect:
“I understand it’s standard to put on a smile until you get off work and get to go home and drown it in the necessary amount of alcohol.”
“Or ice cream. I prefer that. But I´d prefer not serving him at all. I could slip that woman a note to tell her to run as fast as she can from that idiot.”
