Caroline’s eyebrows raised when she noticed the bruise on Hayes’s face, a concerned look on her own as she quickly put her coffee down. “Not as shit as yours,” she said, head tilting as she shook her head. “Reproductive health,” she almost brushed it off in favor of moving around the table to look at his bruise. “What happened?”

her expression morphs into one of unbridled concern, her coffee oh so easily left forgotten in front of her. he tilts his head to the side, his features screwed up in amusement. “huh. not the reaction i usually get.” he huffs out a small laugh and simply shakes his head. “elbow to the face,” the bruise colouring his skin has faded; the edges a smudged yellow, the slash of green right under his eye the only clue eluding to it’s more gruesome state just days earlier. “what? you don’t think it adds to my charm.” his voice is watered down with mirth.

“You know–” Caroline said, sitting down and taking a sip of her coffee. She had just spent 4 hours on a street corner, asking people if they had a second to talk about reproductive health, and she was beat. A cup of coffee and some sitting would do her well. “–I will never ignore those people handing out flyers on the street corners again. That shit’s rough, let me tell you.”

her voice pulls his attention away from his phone, where a plethora of highlights and breaking news in all things sports flash across the screen. he lifts his head, the brim of his hat no longer hiding the healing bruising blooming over his cheekbone. “shit day, goldie?” he broke off a generous piece of brownie before nudging the chocolatey treat in her direction, gesturing for her to help herself. “so what’s the cause-of-the-day? i like to know exactly what i’m avoiding.” he pops the last bite of his cake into his mouth, flashing caroline a wry smile.

he worked a lot and wasn’t expecting a jock for a son but he made sure hayes had everything he needed to play the sport he loved and tried to make it to every game he could so we love him
