“I was getting pretty good grades until I was out of middle school. Back then, people liked me for no particular reason. They thought I was a good kid and I deserved to be loved because I did well in school. But once I entered a specialized high school where only smart kids attend, I became unexceptional. In the past, I thought I was great, smart, someone not to be hated but loved, but it turned out that wasn’t the case any more. Even worse, I didn’t know how to build a relationship with others as who I was. Eventually, I grew away from my friends and couldn’t focus on academics, so I often said things like, ‘I want to move to a deserted place. I want to run away. I want to run away to the woods.’ Later, I found out they were one of the warning signs of suicidal thoughts. They could be really detrimental.” “So what happened after then?” “My thoughts eventually changed as time passed. I came to accept that I had been obsessed with the thought that I ought be great, even though I could be not as exceptional or good as I thought. So, compared to the past, I became more laid back toward my life. But I didn’t gain unique strength. It’s nothing special. I simply gained courage to accept hatred.“

“중학교 때까지 나름 공부를 잘했어요. 그때는 사람들이 저를 그냥 좋아해줬어요. 공부를 잘 하니까 착하고, 예쁨 받을 친구라고 생각한 거죠. 그러다가 공부 잘 하는 애들만 모아 놓은 특목고에 진학했는데, 거기서는 제가 전혀 특별하지 않더라고요. 예전엔 내가 진짜 잘난 사람이고 똑똑한 사람이고, 내가 미움 받지 않는 사람이고 항상 사랑 받는 사람이라고 생각했는데 그게 아니게 된 거잖아요. 게다가 그냥 저 자체로 사람들과 만날 때 사람들과의 관계를 쌓는 법을 몰랐어요. 친구들과 멀어지고 공부도 잘 안 돼서 그 땐 사람 없는 곳에 가고 싶다, 도망치고 싶다, 산속으로 도망가고 싶다 이런 말들을 많이 했어요. 이게 지나고 알아보니까 그게 자살징조현상 중에 하나더라고요. 정말 위험했어요.” “그 후 어떻게 됐나요?” “시간이 지나면서 그 생각이 바뀌더라고요. 내가 생각보다 대단한 사람이 아니고, 좋지 않은 사람일수도 있는데 너무 대단해야 한다는 생각에 사로잡혀 있었다는 걸 인정하게 된 것 같아요. 이제는 제 삶을 대할 때 보다 더 너그러워졌다고 할까요. 그렇다고 딱히 대단한 저만의 무기가 생긴 거는 아니에요. 평범해요. 미움 받을 용기, 뭐 그런 게 생긴 거죠.”
