Like there are no common threads between different alternative artists, it's all just like 70 different subgenres rock or pop rock lumped together for convenience because ???
On the same vain, Indie is not a genre, it is a description of whether or not an artist is signed to a major label, indie tells you absolutely nothing about how a song will sound
Genre is a description of how a song or album sounds, not a marketing term that you can use to appeal to specific people
Like rock, folk, hip hop, country, jazz. Those are Genres because they have a specific sound that you can use to say, yeah this is that genre. Alternative and Indie are marketing terms.
