If you or someone you know is struggling with any of the above signs, Dot wants to help. In addition to seeking support through the options listed below under “Dot’s Assistance for Mental Health,” consider taking the following steps to make your days on the road more enjoyable and productive.
-Talk to Someone This can be extremely difficult, but it’s the most important step to getting help. Do what you can to stay connected with loved ones, even when it feels difficult or burdensome. FaceTime, regular calls, and even social media can help you feel engaged with what’s going on at home.
-Establish a Daily Routine This allows you to know what to expect each day and feel a sense of normalcy and predictability. Whether it’s keeping consistent breaks, starting your morning off with the same breakfast, or going to bed at the same time each night, a regular routine can be beneficial for your mental wellbeing.
-Take Breaks as Needed Do not force yourself to continue working when you are tired, anxious, hungry, etc. Know when it’s time to stop and take a rest. Spend your breaks doing the things that relax you, whether that’s watching television, reading, listening to music, or playing a video game.
-Make Time for Self-Care Self-care is a big buzzword these days, but it all comes down to taking the time to do things that help you feel renewed and energized. For many people, this includes exercise and eating healthy. Maybe it means a long, hot shower or spending the first 10 minutes of your morning meditating. Make sure you’re leaving room in your day for activities that recharge your battery and allow you to take good care of your body.
-Bring Reminders of Home From family photos to your favorite mementos, making your truck feel like an extension of your home can offer comfort to drivers. You may also choose to bring daily supplies and food and beverages, which can help establish a consistent routine and help you avoid unhealthy meal options on the road.

A study published online April 22, 2022, by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests vitamin D deficiency may raise risk for dementia and stroke.
The study analyzed more than 294,000 people (most of them women over 60) living in the United Kingdom. Using blood tests on all participants and neuroimaging tools on about 34,000, researchers looked for associations between vitamin D levels and risks of dementia and stroke. A normal blood vitamin D level was defined as at least 50 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L); a deficiency was defined as less than 25 nmol/L.
Low vitamin D levels were linked with an increased risk of both dementia and stroke over the following 11 years. Based on this observational study, people with low vitamin D levels were found to have a 54% greater chance of developing dementia compared with people whose levels were normal. Researchers acknowledged that these results do not prove that taking extra vitamin D, even if
you have a low blood level, can prevent dementia or stroke.

1. Cut back on refined carbs One way to help lose weight quickly is to cut back on sugars and starches, or carbohydrates. This could be with a low carb eating plan or by reducing refined carbs and replacing them with whole grains.
When you do that, your hunger levels go down, and you generally end up eating fewer calories. With a low carb eating plan, you’ll utilize burning stored fat for energy instead of carbs.
If you choose to eat more complex carbs like whole grains along with a calorie deficit, you’ll benefit from higher fiber and digest them more slowly. This makes them more filling to keep you satisfied. A 2020 study confirmed that a very low carbohydrate diet was beneficial for losing weight in older populations.
Research also suggests that a low carb diet may reduce appetite, which can lead to naturally eating fewer calories without thinking about it or feeling hungry.
Note that the long-term effects of a low carb diet are still being researched. It can also be difficult to adhere to a low carb diet, which may lead to yo-yo dieting and less success in maintaining a healthy weight.
There are potential downsides to a low carb diet that may lead you to a different method. Reduced calorie diets can also lead to weight loss and be easier to maintain for longer periods of time.
2. Eat protein, fat, and vegetables Aim to include a variety of foods at each meal. To balance your plate and help you lose weight your meals should include: -a protein source -fat source -vegetables -a small portion of complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains
3. Move your body Exercise, while not required to lose weight, can help you lose weight more quickly. Lifting weights has particularly good benefits. By lifting weights, you’ll burn calories and help prevent your metabolism from slowing down, which is a common side effect of losing weight.
Try strength training three to four times a week. If you’re new to lifting weights, a trainer may be able to help you get started. Make sure your doctor is also aware of any new exercise plans.
If lifting weights is not an option for you, doing some cardio workouts such as walking, jogging, running, cycling, or swimming is very beneficial for weight loss and general health. Both cardio and weightlifting may help with weight loss and offer lots of other health benefits.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common health problem for truck drivers. It involves degeneration of the joints in the body, leading to symptoms such as joint pain and stiffness. One literature review found that people who used ginger to treat their OA saw significant reductions in pain and disability.
Only mild side effects, such as a dissatisfaction with the taste of ginger, were observed. However, the taste of ginger, along with stomach upset, still prompted nearly 22% of the study participants to drop out.
Study participants received between 500 milligrams (mg) and 1 gram of ginger each day for anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks. A majority of them had been diagnosed with OA of the knee.
Another study from 2011 found that a combination of topical ginger, mastic, cinnamon, and sesame oil can help reduce pain and stiffness in people with OA of the knee.
Also, obestiy is a common health problem for truck drivers. A 2019 literature review concluded that ginger supplementation significantly reduced body weight, the waist-hip ratio, and the hip ratio in people with overweight or obesity.
A 2016 study of 80 women with obesity found that ginger could also help reduce body mass index (BMI) and blood insulin levels. High blood insulin levels are associated with obesity.Study participants received relatively high daily doses — 2 grams — of ginger powder for 12 weeks.
A 2019 literature review of functional foods also concluded that ginger had a very positive effect on obesity and weight loss.

1. May support blood sugar balance A study investigating the benefits of pumpkin seeds combined with linseed found they may be helpful in preventing diabetic complications, such as high cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The hypoglycaemic properties of these seeds may help those with diabetes to better manage blood sugar levels. Read Diabetes UK's top 10 dietary tips to manage diabetes.
2. Heart healthy Pumpkin seeds are a good source of unsaturated fats, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). There has been good evidence that eating pumpkin seeds as part of a balanced diet, because of their ALA content, may well be beneficial for the heart and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. A 2011 study also found that pumpkin seed oil helped improve cholesterol levels in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, being a useful source of magnesium, pumpkin seeds may help regulate blood pressure, but more research is needed on the role magnesium plays in this area. Learn more about what to eat for a healthy heart.
3. Are antioxidant-rich Pumpkin seeds are a good source of antioxidants, which may help scavenge the ‘free radicals’ responsible for cell damage. One interesting study found pumpkin seeds were associated with a significantly reduced breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women compared to no consumption, and a second study showed they may help protect pre-menopausal women, too.
4. May reduce cancer risk While there are no single ‘superfoods’ that can prevent cancer, and certain risk factors for cancer are unrelated to diet, there is evidence that eating a healthy diet may reduce the risk of cancer. Diets rich in pumpkin seeds have been associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers including that of the breast, prostate and colon.
5. May benefit bladder health Studies have found that the oil from pumpkin seeds, may have the potential to prevent or treat urinary disorders, however further research is still required to confirm these findings.

Sweet potatoes are root vegetables. Baked in its skin, a medium sweet potato provides 103 calories and 0.17 g of fat.
Each sweet potato also contains:
-Much more than an adult’s daily requirement of vitamin A
-25% of their vitamin C and B6 requirements
-12% of their potassium requirement
-beta carotene, which may improve eye health and help fight cancer
Sweet potatoes may be a good option for people with diabetes. This is because they are low on the glycemic index and rich in fiber, so they may help regulate blood sugar.
