Flaming hoop, a lottery queen, applause from ancestors. You thought you knew all the songs and then you hear something. New. Ace of violins, Ace of cups. It will be the year of elixir, of spellbound friends swooping in with remedy. I see you on a veranda & I’m not sure I know what a veranda even is but the air is humid & sweet, & in the humid air, laughter. A new car, a new way to cross the country, the water. Vision: starlings. A beautiful country barn & locket in a drawer. May and June and June. An important arrival. Infinite asking you to remember what you knew, 9 years old, underscore of Venus rising. & moving vast / with specifics. Messages in light in dreams. Incoming: A glow. Within the circle, a bright star stirs the animals awake. Is a miracle. Is always. Is a kind of year you parasail in love & of love is the show-stopping voice & we’re here in applause of you.
Psychic poem 2020 for Niina Pollari
Rest of the poem here in Bennington Review.
check out this extremely good comic i did, based on some immortal mariah carey lyrics.
for national poetry month, here’s something i found in a notebook from 2015 that made me laugh. i have no idea if “what’s up hot dogs yeah i’m a witch” is from something, so if you recognize it please let me know.
NEEDS SOMETHING
From my apartment I can look down
Into a construction pit
Until it gets filled
Into a foundation
Everything around me that rises
Seems to also have a negative
Underneath it
I have a negative too
Maybe more than one
I wrote an essay about weightlifting (and also sort of about writing) at Catapult. This badass illustration is by Tallulah Pomeroy.
Two new poems for reading and listening over at Powder Keg.
(An erasure I made from this Jonathan Franzen interview)
happy sunday from editing
A video for my poem “Liquid,” which is about money and personal worth, among other things. M and I made this for the launch of Public Pool. You can also read the poem here.
WILLIAM CORGAN
William Corgan is a machine Staffed by a single person Who seems to not like anyone
I am a machine too I might say “What does liking anyone matter” Not everyone would like me Just as not everyone likes William
I’ve sometimes thought he would like me But then I always think I can beat the odds Every single time This is a flaw I have
I found a juicer on the street and look — I took it home It was on the curb in Gowanus With a sign that said “Works” All the parts baggied
I hauled the box on the train with me Now I just drink juice Foamy with nutrients I bang my head And insist
Some days I believe in things so strongly That it hurts me to say it Because William, I’m not afraid of commitment Of singular focus Of things down to their essences This happens more and more as I get older And as my sense of self grows
It applies to superficial things too I can move from feeling unhappy With my leg bigness Or whatever To neutral To fine
Things happen subtly with time
William Corgan faces changes every day too He also looks into his palace Of mirrors and sees The slow glacier of his face Somehow at once still And moving downward
I like everything about nostalgia And I feel like he might, too
I like to look back at the nineties When he was a grown man And I was a little girl
There are changes That separate everyone From the events we all look back on nostalgically These changes are huge and noticeable And chemical Irreversible
Then there are changes we don’t even notice happening The maze changes shape behind us As we look forward
Despite all our rage There is no way back William, there was never a way back
"Do You Feel Tenderness" by Niina Pollari
When I went to the doctor I forgot to take off my bra She said “Oh! I’m sorry, I need to check Your breast tissue” Yes, I said, I’m so sorry I had a hard time unclasping the hooks and eyes I didn’t look at the doctor, who was a new lady doctor I met ten minutes before, at the start of my appointment Finally I took off my bra So many wolves fell out In the roaring of the wolves the doctor said “Do you feel tenderness” She was touching me No, I said, not mostly She said “You have very fibrous breast tissue I would not be surprised If you felt tenderness during your period” And the wolves ran around the table like a dog pack Screaming and howling In that little room I said I don’t have a period, then we barely locked eyes, the end Read about the poem here.
