The first time Veronica Mars and Logan Echolls kiss is a favorite among LoVe fans and can usually be seen listed on a number of favorite moment articles. When it comes to the courting ritual of a heterosexual pairing on television the “All Girls Want a Bad Boy” trope is a popular one and often used to great effect. And while the audience is usually able to see it coming a mile away sometimes it sneaks up on us like it did with Veronica Mars.
Part of the reason for this is because up until around episode ten of that first season Veronica and Logan were not friends. In fact, some may even say they couldn’t stand each other and they wouldn’t be wrong. You don’t call someone an, “obligatory, psychotic jackass” because you secretly harbor a crush on them.
But apparently regardless of how the characters felt about each other in the beginning, there was something undeniable about their chemistry and creator Rob Thomas knew it. So much so that around episode seven or eight he pulled Kristen Bell (Veronica) and Jason Dohring (Logan) aside to inform them that sometime in the future Logan & Veronica would become a couple. However, as a viewer, we knew none of this, as far as we were concerned Veronica was still in love with Duncan Kane.
Throughout the course of the first season, we get to know two very different versions of Veronica, the one pre-best friends murder & the one after Veronica had been raped. Some may argue that who were are in the beginning is who we are for life, but then that would defeat the whole purpose of evolution and the simple truth is there are some events in our lives that change who we are at our very core. Those events forever alter our course and the person we were meant to be.
The person Veronica was before Lily’s murder probably would have been very happy to end up with a guy like Duncan Kane. But the Veronica we met in the pilot had changed too much by then to have ever been able to live life happily ever after with Duncan even if she herself wasn’t ready to admit it. Admitting it would be saying goodbye to a life that made sense. A life where her best friend was still alive, her parents were still together, and it didn’t seem like her whole world hated her.
We started to see a shift in Veronica & Logan’s relationship around episode ten, “An Echolls Family Christmas.” It was during this episode where we saw that while they weren’t friends by any means of the word there was a definite thaw happening. It was hard to mistake the look Logan gave Veronica as she was shuffling the deck as anything other than respect mixed with awe. It was during this scene we were reminded that these two were once friends, a long time ago.
Something I always loved about Veronica Mars and Rob Thomas is that Thomas never tried to hide the fact that Veronica had a lot of demons. She could be close-minded in how she viewed people she deemed not worth her time and very rarely ever tried to find out why they were they way they were. The few times she did “peek behind the curtain” usually coincided with a case she was working on. She was myopic in her beliefs and had trouble seeing beyond her need to exact justice on those she felt deserved to be punished.
Veronica expected everyone around her to respect her rules, but she rarely if ever respected theirs and she couldn’t handle it in season three when Logan used those rules in the same manner she would have herself if the situation had been reversed when he tried to protect her from the campus rapist. Veronica Mars was and continues to be a flawed hero. It’s what makes her so great and relatable and it’s what made the moment she let her guard down for the briefest of moments and kissed Logan such a memorable one.
