More often than not I try to work on one section of a piece at a time, and if it’s a human figure the order is usually skin, hair, facial details, clothes, background, then final little extras. So the first things I added to her skin was a mid-tone, to help her body look rounded, and a highlight, to show where the light source was coming from and give her a glow.
Some process screenshots of my piece Free. First I put the lines for her body and hair, and bikini bottoms on two separate layers, then a overlaid colors that would fit the color scheme I planned to go with. Coloring the lines, as apposed to leaving them black tends to soften the overall look of the piece. This was an #inyourstyle challenge so I picked the colors from the original. Next I filled in the flat base colors for her skin, hair, and bikini. I also created some skin swatches.
