the transformative journey sora goes through is just so awesome. we see him so innocent and pure in birth by sleep, with his kindness stemming from that inherent goodness that children carry. he still carries that goodness when he officially starts his journey, but he's naive and unaware of the weight the consequences of his actions have. but he's only fourteen, how was he meant to know? he was just doing what he thought was right.
and then he loses a year and wakes up confused and a little annoyed that he can't just go home like he thought he would be able to. he has to save the worlds (again!) and deal with a more complicated mess of bad guys and it's getting a little harder to keep that positive outlook but he has to. the ship won't fly if he's not smiling.
there's preparations for a war. there are missing lights. there are lives he stole that he has to get back. and he fails his mastery exam. he has to save the worlds (AGAIN!) and the weight of those consequences are killing him and then they lose the war before it ever truly began. everything he's fought for dies before his eyes and he signs his death certificate to make sure the story doesn't end like that. he brings everyone back and goes off to die on his own because it's always been about them.
it's a good thing that sora has always looked up to cloud and leon. when he makes it back from quadratum, he can recognize the haunted look they've always carried.

the words take a minute to register, lost to the songs the wind sings as she makes her way through the little spit of land they’ve called home. the sun has disappeared beyond the horizon hours ago but he’s yet to move from where he last saw the sight, paralyzed in the absence of light. and wasn’t that such a funny thing to consider, when he’s allowed himself to be swallowed by the darkest of darks? but no, he couldn’t be blamed. the darkness on this island was rooted in something fouler, something unseen anywhere else— there were too many unpleasant memories tied to what happens on destiny island, when the sun sets.
riku knew this. he knew / he was there / he stood in the monster’s maw with him, hand in hand, when those jaws closed and still— he asks sora to sleep? something stings where it rests atop his tongue, swallowed down before more cruelty stains the little spit of land they’ve called haven. ❛ i don’t think i’ll be able to sleep, even if i tried. ❜ honesty, a vulnerability not often shown / an exposure so indecent that sora laughs before anything can be offered in response. body turns ( cracks / struggles against the burdens that continue to weigh down despite reaching the supposed happily ever after ) and he offers his best friend a smile that feels as out of place as the boy does. ❛ we should have a slumber party! we can go find kairi, and see if she wants to, so it can be like old times! ❜
sleep won’t come, not again. not for a while. not until peace is made with the nightmares / not until sora can finally find it within himself to relax in this little spit of land that hasn’t felt like home since they’ve landed in her waters. but as long as he’s not alone, maybe a step can be taken in the right direction.
