twin peaks fans, especially here on tumblr, act like they would know the truth behind laura's suffering and behaviour, but the truth is there are many laura palmers, ronettes, teresas, shellys...in real life and we don't realise and/or don't do a thing to help them, and that's the most important message this shows has to offer.
"the show with Significant Dual Landmarks is about trauma and abuse and Laura was abused in the context of relationships with older men, therefore any romantic relationship between Audrey and Cooper could only be read as abusive" relies on so many thought-terminating cliches though. It requires no analysis or curiosity about how abuse manifested in Laura's relationships, it just extrapolates that older man younger woman evil and then this is used as a blunt instrument to beat down - in this instance - one particular ship which doesn't actually contain the elements which constituted abuse in Laura's relationships. Were Laura's relationships with Ben, Jacques, Leo etc bad because they never showed any concern for why she was sexually available to them, because they actively encouraged her dependency on them, because they didn't care about hurting her and were indifferent to (if not outright disdainful of) her happiness, safety or consent? No, it's just because older man younger woman evil and obviously Cooper would become evil if he was with Audrey regardless of how he treated her in any romantic iteration of their relationship.
