Twin Peaks | 1.04 "Rest in Pain"
TWIN PEAKS | 2.11
Dale and Audrey's earlier interactions are fun and flirty and cute- and very informative about both their characters- but I am delighted at just how much his rejection of her is exactly what adheres them. Audrey's desire to trust him is only affirmed by his refusal to take advantage of her grief and vulnerability. That and his renewed efforts to be a friend to her, to listen and be present, when that's so much of what she's wanted from him- "thank you for talking with me."
He's just also not ready for the fact that Audrey doesn't just want a shoulder to cry on, or a sympathetic ear to share her troubles with, but to be an equal. To be seen as valuable. And that beyond that, beyond him, she is doing this for Laura. Just like he is. And Cooper doesn't see this yet, he hasn't yet unpacked the condescension of chivalry; he doesn't even consider that Audrey might put herself if harm's way to help Laura. Just like him.
