Have we learned nothing?

We’ve all seen the pictures. A black and white still shot of a poor black man getting hosed down by a police officer for the audacity of being black in public. The racist political cartoons of the era. Jim Crow laws and segregation. But for some fucking reason snot nosed brats of the 21st century are clamoring for old times again. For some reason some entitled little shits decided to take over a town and desecrate it with their hate filled rhetoric that is fueled with a mixture of outrage and bitterness that the world doesn’t think they’re as cute as their parents do. That they for some reason are convinced that black and Latinx are draining “good white people” resources and that they should be the sole benefactors of anything decent. This is bullshit. Grade A, angus beef bullshit. It is bullshit to demand that your race be the leaders of the world and claim to love Jesus, a Middle Eastern refugee compelled by his love of fellow man. You do NOT get to thump your Bible while calling someone a n*****. It completely ignores the image of Christ in an entire race. In addition, it completely invalidates any concept of social justice in even the most pragmatic of terms, something that Jesus was an ardent supporter of. The protestors in Charlottesville are a long of things, but they’re sure as shit not Christians. They are extremists, bigots, and recalcitrant children and should be dealt with as such.

How'd you meet your fiancée?

We were attending a conference-type thing together, and I first met her in the lobby of the Hampton Inn where we were both staying. A member of her group– who was a real pill– was having a conniption because Megan (@hearty-hufflepuff) had the temerity to make herself a waffle when their group “was going to be late” and told her there was no way she was going to finish that waffle on time. She then proceeded to shove the ENTIRE. BELGIAN. WAFFLE. into her mouth at once, entirely out of spite. 

I was sitting at a table nearby, simultaneously thinking that was revolting and heroic of her, and entirely smitten with how beautiful she was. I was too scared to say anything but I handed her a napkin.

The funny thing is, it didn't occur to me that she was the "napkin lady" until later that day, when our teams were meeting for the initial scrimmage. I remember seeing her and smiling to myself a bit- Anna's got that kind of gentle but really noticeable beauty and it was the first time that I ever really let myself embrace those kinds of feelings. (Mushiness aside!) The aforementioned pill (my team captain) refused to shake Anna's hand for a good two minutes, and then it clicked- she was the napkin lady too.

Rest is history!

The famous blackboard at the Museum of the History of Science, Oxford was used by Einstein in May 1931 during his lectures on a visit to the University of Oxford. The last three lines are estimates of the density of matter in the universe, the radius of the universe, and the timespan of the expansion of the universe.

all about perspective

I think I witnessed the peak of human intelligence yesterday at my local pharmacy.

So, as you might imagine– between two friends in prison and volunteering for an organization that works with death row inmates–I go through a lot of stamps. 

Yesterday I had to buy some more, so I stopped by Walgreen’s to get some. (It was Sunday, so the post office was closed.)

So I asked for a book of stamps, at the counter along with the advil I was buying for Megan’s back, and was given this:

The lady at the counter said, “You don’t mind that they’re holiday themed, do you? I have flags if you’d rather.”

I said the Christmas stamps were fine, and in fact I thought they were kind of cute. 

I was punching in the PIN for the debit card when the guy behind me said, completely dead seriously and without a hint of irony, "You know those don’t work now, right? They’re Christmas stamps!”

"But they're forever stamps!"

To be a moderate is not to be neutral or silent or without convictions. It is a willingness to do the holy work of listening before raising one’s voice. It is a radical rejection of all fundamentalism, however it is packaged and presented. It is a refusal to conform one’s convictions to the standards of ideological purity set forth by either “side”. Ultimately, it is the belief that God, as St. Paul says in his letter to the Romans, “shows no partiality,” which means neither can we.

I think we’ve reached a dangerous point on the “ideological purity” front when acknowledging someone as a human being and insisting that they be treated with dignity and respect is equated with condoning or defending all of their actions– or when failing to fall in line and disavow the image of God in someone (I’ll take “sin against the Holy Spirit” for 500, Alex) because of their actions is equated with approval of or participation in that behavior.

This goes on both sides- you're not complicit in "the sin of gay marriage" for baking a cake, and you're not automatically a bigot for voting how you felt at the time.

With that being said, the political climate now requires all hands on deck. What will you do with those hands? Well, that's up to you.

For me, I'm going to try to fulfill what I would argue is one of the most important baptismal promises that I made:

"Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?"

I will, with God's help.
