Heather Hawke is a Music Photographer You Should Know

“When you live in a city that has no record labels, one alternative radio station and a couple of small venues, it’s tough to get your foot in the door,” says Reno, Nevada-based music photographer Heather Hawke (@heatherhwk). But she was persistent, and after a few years of shooting local concerts, Heather decided to kick things into high gear by launching her own music magazine, Decorated Youth, in 2012. “Since most of the photography work I do is for my magazine, I can afford to be picky,” says Heather, on being able to pick and choose which musicians she photographs (past subjects include James Bay, Chvrches and Melanie Martinez). “I know it may sound silly, and even pretentious, but as a photographer I feel like I do the best job when I’m most excited about who I’m working with.”
