Just when you thought Didot and Bodoni were the hackneyed staples of chicklit lore, a clever designer at Harlequin made the old new again. I really like the playful and irreverent typesetting and that the figures actually sit harmoniously with the type, though some more successfully than others.
Love's Avenging Heart by Patricia Matthews (1989), Kensington Publishing (formerly Pinnacle Books)
Two very different type treatments of the title. Personally I am going for the cover on the right. The elongated flourishes and the passionate clinch combined with the symmetry makes for a much more emotive cover, though not necessarily very telling in its historical setting like the cover on the left.

Now that is seriously a long F bar!

Thought it was interesting that the author's logotype has a characteristic swash in the bar of the uppercase A that has actually remained constant over the many rebrands.

Calligraphic title treatment and custom type for the author's name gives an oriental feel that adds to the cover.
Almost a Scandal by Elizabeth Essex (2012), St. Martin's Paperbacks. Letterer: ?
One of FontShop's best picks for 2013 is Desire for BEST ROMANCE. I'm inclined to agree! Designed by Charles Borges de Oliveira, Desire is the perfect font for adding that extra flourish to any word or phrase.

Silk and Splendour by Ellen Tanner Marsh (1986), Avon Books. Letterer: unknown.
Normally that N would not have a tail, but somehow the letterer manages to make it 'work'! That said, I would have just left the N be, and drawn a separate flourish underneath it. Perhaps adding a tail to the P and extending it across to the ending R.

Harlequin Spice's titles around this time had some fantastic lettering solutions (before the unfortunate Fifty Shades cover clone phenomenon), but this one ranks as my favourite.
