I’ve found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love.

My final drawing of Hekate, the Greek goddess of magic and witchcraft, moon and night, and ghosts and necromancy. She is a big inspiration for my art, and I’ve tried drawing her so many times but was never satisfied with anything I did until now. (And Hekate has been randomly popping up in my life in various places the last few months, so I thought It Was Time.) Thank you everyone who joined me on Twitch while I drew her, and thank you to those of you who supported my WIPs screenshots! Your support means so much to me 💜🌙

I don’t often like to title my work. In some ways it feels limiting, it suggests to people what they should be getting out of it, when I personally like to leave something to the imagination of the viewer. But I’m also just terrible at titles…
Redd Walitzki’s “Trip the Light Fantastic” at Modern Eden Gallery.
Currently on view at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, California is artist Redd Walitzki’s solo exhibition, “Trip the Light Fantastic.”
Walitzki takes us on a journey to a space where the everyday universe is transfigured in “Trip the Light Fantastic.” Ethereal beings appear self-luminous as the brightness of their visionary experience spills over, creating distortions in reality’s fabric. This abundant overflow is captured in paintings filled with otherworldly light and color. As Aldous Huxley writes, “Preternatural light, preternatural intensity of coloring, preternatural significance — these are all characteristics of Other Worlds and Golden Ages.” Walitzki’s delicate panels embrace this principle fully through lush use of surface and swirling diamond-clear laser-cut edges.
Layered in these works, there is also an apprehension about the rapidly shifting state of our natural ecology. The idyllic chromatic environments in the pieces hover on the brink of destruction: fire and ash evaporate blooming fields, and acidic oceans leave corals gasping for air. Yet the serene strangeness of the more-than-human muses in Walitzki’s works contain a glimmer of hope. Perhaps by exploring the far-off regions of the mind, in all their beauty and complexity, we can discover the key to building a brighter tomorrow.
The exhibition is on view until March 1st, 2019.
