But not really... Traveling alone is the most amazing way to explore who you are and what you're made of. Having no agenda and no need to be anywhere but exactly where you are is transformative. I haven't felt more myself than this in years. Day 3 in New York today and I am so happy I don't have to be anywhere but here for the next 6 days. Love you all, but loving this more. #hedderbecomesheather #travel #nyc #ny #š #š #š #amtrak #amtraklife #crosscountry #alone (at New York City - Upper East Side)

The Cities So Far: Portland
I am on day 8 of my journey and have been reflecting on everything I have done and seen so far. Believe me, there is a lot. There have definitely been both positive and negative attributes to each city so I will try to recount each city and my time there as I experienced it, independently of my experience elsewhere to save from comparison.
PORTLANDĀ Part I
I love Portland, I really do. I almost went to college there five years ago and absolutely fell in love with the city when I visited. The inhabitants are friendly and genuine in a way that you feel as though you are surrounded by people who are completely unafraid to be themselves. Right up my alley.Ā
When I first arrived in Portland I had a strange encounter with a police officer who thought I was a person of interest instead of just a weary gadabout. Shortly after my near arrest (kidding Mom), I was enthusiastically greeted by Donica, whom I have known for most of my life but have grown closer to inĀ the past year or so. Donica recently moved to Portland after finishing her Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is awaiting the arrival of her Oregon license to practice. I got in the car with Donica and was ready to take on the city.
We made our way to her adorable 1 bedroom apartment, where prior to arrival she gave a foreboding warning that her home sat above an Indian restaurant and as she put itĀ ādoesnāt so much smell like curry, as there is more of an ambiance of it.ā
After arriving to her home she was brainstorming the evening activities we could explore, she hesitantly suggested something she had seen the day before that looked cool but was unsure if I would be interested.Ā
āIām usually down for anything,ā I said,Ā āWhat is it?ā
āItās a beer festival downtown by the Christmas tree that is specializing in winter ales.ā
āSay no more,ā I said,Ā āSay. No. More.ā
With the sun set, making a deceivingly dark early afternoon, Donica and I took an uber to Pioneer Courthouse Square, also known as Portlandās living room. There we found sets of double-decker beer tents surrounding a 30 foot tall Christmas tree. $35 and a collection of 12 tickets later we were set for the festivities.Ā
It truly looked like a proper beer fest in Bavaria. Both Donica and I have roots in Germany, hers being of the familial variety and mine being of the ex-boyfriend branch. Regardless, we both have a strong love and appreciation for authentic German beer fests and were so happy to see the that the Holiday Ale Fest was representing a time-honored tradition with attention to detail and care. Ā
We sampled several 4 ounce pours of everything from winter ale, to porter, to a persimmon sour, taking diligent notes on each beer we were tasting in order savor the quality and deduce the aging process and barrel type.Ā
Just kidding.
We were running from booth to booth trying to find the coolest name or strangest beer listed in the directory. However, one beer that we were able to distinguish barrel type was a lager that had been aged in spiced rum barrels. It had a distinct essence of a barely wine with a touch of a sour to it that made it especially memorable. At this point we were a few beers deep so the termĀ āspiced rum barrelā could not have been funnier to us and thus inspired us to coin this term as our code word for any handsome lumbersexual dude who was also at the event. Remember, this is Portland...that describes basically every dude. I think people grew a little tired of us ceremoniously shoutingĀ āspiced rum barrellll....ā But we couldnāt have cared less.Ā
We split a Cubano Sandwich and early in the evening and found a free photobooth area that our friends parents had been talking about. Of course we had to partake. Luckily for us, an adorable little man dressed as Santa Claus was just finishing up a photo session. We thought he was a part of the booth but it turns out he was just a festive patron trying to get his beer on. We took 3 photos, each more hilarious than the last, with a beer slinging Santa in the center.
The festival began to wind down and we were ready for some real food. A girl on the street suggested a hole-in-the-wall location just around the corner and we made our way there. Unfortunately for Donica, establishments that serve alcohol in Oregon are under strict carding laws and so her temporary Oregon License would not suffice and she would need an alternative form of ID. I suggested we go back to hers and grab her passport then come back to hang out again. After all it was only about 9 PM. I called for an uber and we made our way to the street to find our car. That was when we met our driver Garrick, that was when the night really got started...

Moment of Note
I had to leave Shelbyās apartment in order for her cleaning lady to do her thing uninterruptedly. I was asleep when Shelby left so I didnāt have a good idea of where anything was or where to go in order to write while getting enough exploration out of the area in the time frame that I have. Instead if googling I decided to start walking and see what I could find. Within 15 minutes, and without needing to make any turns, I found the cutest cafe called Zekeās where I was enthusiastically greeted by the most charming and warm baristas that were so drastically contrasted to the coldgrey weather outside. The Ron Weasley Doppelganger behind the bar was happy to choose an english pasty for me as I was too tired to even consider making a decision about anything without caffeine in my system. Now I am sitting in this cafe reading a book in Pittsburgh and so happy to be here.Ā

The Science of Sleep
One thing I did not properly anticipate about this trip was how tired I would be. My eyes are constantly struggling to stay open. I, like so many people, need sleep. I donāt function without it. So far this has been the most difficult aspect of my trip. Attempting to sleep when you are always on the go and anticipating the next leg of your journey can be challenging, for more varied reasons than you would think.
I believe that the main reason I feel so tired is because I maintain a healthy level of anxiety at all times, and when I say healthy I really mean annoyingly active. I have traveled alone enough to know what I need to be doing and where I need to go. However, the adrenaline fueled train-of-thought that is constantly running through my mind can be summed up as follows (please read as fast as you can for proper understanding):Ā
Where am I?
Where do I have to go next?
How do I get there?Ā
Do I have everything I need?
Where is my debit card?
Where is my cell phone?Ā
Why would I put it there?
Is that guy following me?
Ok no he is not calm down Heather!
Why am I hungry?
When is the last time I ate?
Holy crap I should eat!
This backpack is heavy...
Iāll eat after I get to my destination...
Yeah, it is exhausting.
The other reason I am so tired is because I am not sleeping. There is simply too much to do and see to get a good amount of sleep in the town I am staying in. I keep telling myself that I will sleep on the train, which is a laugh. Unless you are in a sleeper car it is nearly impossible to get more than an hour or two of sleep on the train.Ā
One reason is that people are constantly moving. For those of you who have never traveled by train, you can pretty much do whatever you want on the train. You can bring your own alcohol, you can walk around and check out the rest of the train, you can even have a rendezvous in an empty car (I want to make this exponentially clear that donāt know this from experience, the staff told me) So if you are trying to sleep in your seat and someone is walking past you as the train surges (train speak for a jolt after a strong curve or bump) you will have someone in your lap. This uninvited lap visit is even more likely if the mover has been drinking, which they most likely have been. Below is a photo of the remnants of my glass of wine I enjoyed in the dining car on my first night of my 40 hour segment from Wenatchee to Chicago.Ā
This is spillage is strictly from train surges, so yeah, if you are trying to sleep and someone is walking near you while one of these occurs you are most definitely going to be awoken.Ā
I am not trying to be a Debbie-Downer for my first real post. The truth is that I have been having such an amazing time that I am not sleeping in order to experience it all with little-to-no catch up.Ā
The train is not only a difficult place to sleep because of train surges but also because there are so many fascinating people from all over the world who have nothing else to do but talk and share stories. For an extrovert it is absolutely exhilerating. I will write more about my experience with all the people I have met on the train in a later post. Until then I will do my best to rest and conserve energy and hopefully look and feel like a normal human being again.Ā
Finally
So I finally have the opportunity to actually sit down and write something. I am currently in Chicago on day 7 of my excursion and rather than run around with my 30 lb backpack (yes it is that heavy) I thought I would give myself a break and recount the adventures of the last week. Rest assured I have been keeping diligent notes and have been doing my best to not forget a single moment.
I originally thought I would write each post day by day like a diary but then i decided I hated that idea. I also figured no one really cared about the finite details about something that happened a week ago. Instead I have chosen to write each post in regards to a theme or occurrence or just a downright good story. Also I am not even sure I will do it like that consistently. We shall see....
