I'm reading the arthashastra rn(which is basically an ancient law book written around 321-296 BC in case you didn't know) and dude this law is so weird😭

"A relative, or a servant of an absentee husband may take the latter’s wife of loose character under his own protection (saṃgṛhṇīyāt =may marry her). Being under such protection, she shall wait for the return of her husband. If her husband, on his return, entertains no objection, both the protector and the woman shall be acquitted. If he raises any objection, the woman shall have her ears and nose cut off, while her keeper shall be put to death as an adulterer."

Like you can directly like give death sentence for adultery or like divorce but like yeh kaisa khatron ka khiladi hain.

Bravery.

Bravery looks different now.

It is in the words held back, left unspoken, left behind, forgotten. It shines in kindness and forgiveness.

When I was a child, bravery was always roaring. Brave were the men and women with superpowers, saving their love interests and the world, all in one fell swoop, and still being soft-spoken and sweet the moment their battles ended. Bravery was always burning, blood red, splattering across walls and minds.

Now, it peeks through small acts we all see everyday.

It glimmers when somebody lies to bring a smile on someone's face. It shines when a mother takes on the taunts of her relatives to let her son fulfill his dreams. It shimmers when a father gets up and goes back to his soul-sucking work everyday, just so he can put food on the table.

Bravery is when a friend tells someone honestly about their flaws. It is when instead of arguing or proving a point, a person simply walks away. It resides in all the choices people make that bring peace over passion.

Screaming and punching is bravery, yes, but so is patting and shushing. Choosing the right over the easy is brave. Choosing the way away from the crowd is brave.

It is easy to get carried away in the moment, to let anger ride you, but choosing peace over passion? Bravery.
