Nate shrugged. “Three, maybe.” That was a lie. It was five, but Lily was as much a mother to Nate as Anne was. He’d spent more time at her house than he had at his own as a kid. She gave him Eric, and she gave him Serena. And she’d lost Chuck, who he knew was just as much a son to her as he was. He hung his head. In shame, and in grief. He wasn’t the only one hurting. “I don’t know what to do without him,” he admitted. He was falling apart in front of her in a way that someone only did with a parental figure.
At his answer, the woman flagged down the bartender once more and quietly ordered a tall glass of water for him. She may not judge him, but she can still take care of him. Anne had taken in Serena and Eric countless times - most notably when William had left, and it had honestly felt more like a group effort raising their children. “It’s okay to feel lost, Nathaniel,” she said, placing a reassuring hand on his and squeezing softly. “But, at least drink this before you order a fourth one,” she continued once the bartender returned.
Lily knew very well that forbidding never had the hoped for effect (even though she’d still tried it often while her children were growing up, though she’d learned from that, she thought). There wasn’t much she could do that would make feel Nathaniel better - but being here, looking after him, took her mind off the fact that she also felt empty, felt like someone had ripped out her insides or was squeezing them so hard she could barely breathe. “He loved you very much, you know.” Of course, he knew. But, Lily thought, it could still be nice to hear it said out loud.
“Honestly, I’m not really interested in why you think you can’t do this,” Lily said offhandedly, thinking that she had people for this. She shouldn’t have to be the one telling the hotel manager how to do his job. Yet, here she was, at the reception desk of the Empire (now her property), arguing with someone who would soon be fired if they didn’t stop talking and get to it within the next seven to ten seconds.
“Rubbing a delicate finger on her temple, she waited (impatiently) as the manager typed vigorously into the computer and then looked up once more with a look that could only be described as pure fear. “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Bass, but-” the employee said, which was very quickly interrupted by Lily with a stern “Rhodes,” before she sighed and raised a hand to stop him from talking. “Find a way, Richard.”
serialromeo:
This was the third night in a row that Nate found himself planted at the bar of the Empire, nursing a Scotch with trembling fingers. This was the third night that he planned on going up to Chuck’s room. The room, where he lived, and where he died. So far, he hadn’t made it past the restroom that was just south of the bar itself. Maybe he wouldn’t tonight, and maybe that would have to be okay. Somehow, facing the empty hotel room felt more final than watching the casket be lowered. It felt more like Nate needed to be absolutely smashed to even think about properly processing his emotions. He upended the liquor into his mouth before sliding the glass across the bar. He felt a body slide onto the stool next to him but kept his eyes firmly trained on the bartender pouring him another. “If you’re here to judge me for drinking alone on a Tuesday night, I’m not really in the mood.”
“I would never judge you, Nathaniel,” Lily said as she put a reassuring hand on his back and then sat down next to him. “Worrying, however - now that is something I am allowed to do,” she added, obvious that she wouldn’t tolerate protest. Then, before the young man could reply, the barman walked up to her and she ordered a glass of Cabernet, though her focus remained fixated on Nate. They had both lost someone invaluable when they lost Chuck. “How many of those have you had already?”
dcvblum:
“Here’s the deal.” Palms flat on the counter, Devin spared half a glance for the surrounding patrons (but nobody at the ridiculously trendy bar had any interest in anyone who wasn’t themselves, or on the other side of a phone screen.) “My friends—” She twitched her shoulder to indicate a table of women clutching umbrella’d cocktails and who were watching the interaction like it was the season finale of The Bachelor. “—are in town for the weekend, and they’re really enjoying their drinks, and they dared me to come over here and make out with you.” No blushes, no beating around the bush, not even as she added, “‘Cause you’re cute. So. If you’re game …”
Eleanor always had the best new addresses for drinks, but Lily was sure she’d mistaken this time. There wasn’t anyone here over the age of thirty, and the pounding music had almost prevented her from stepping inside. Still, Lily had pushed open the door and walked towards an empty spot at the bar before she texted her friend she’d arrived and was waiting. Of course, while she waited, she could at least get a drink. Toying with her diamond earring while scanning the room, she noticed a girl walk up to someone who was very visibly wearing an engagement ring, and though she was initially just going to raise an eyebrow in judgement, she couldn’t help herself once the woman started talking. “You should tell your friends they should choose someone who’s single,” she said, her voice flat. “Or at least not wearing their ring.”
